The Wacky World of Tex Avery (1997)
Insult
I don't want to just hate on anything or anyone, but this series is an insult to your intelligence and to Tex Avery. For Les Studios Tex to glom onto his name and then produce the waste of frames that they have is reprehensible. It's almost criminal. I've seen their products reviewed on other websites, and when I happened across some episodes on TV and watched for myself I couldn't have agreed more with the detractors. It isn't even so much about using Tex Avery's name or the blatant ripping off of his style (and poorly done at that), it's that this work isn't funny, it isn't well written, it's not even particularly animated with any originality or innovation. It appears to be a very elaborate, extensive attempt to make some money off of anyone who can't, or doesn't care to, distinguish between the classic Tex Avery cartoons and pale, pale imitations. I would request that the graphic for this page be changed for two reasons: 1) That's the cover to an MGM cassette of authentic Tex Avery cartoons, thus misleading and confusing as to the subject of this page, and 2) It's an insult and injustice to Tex Avery himself and the studio of brilliant talent who worked under him.
The Final Alliance (1990)
So good for all the wrong reasons...
There are movies you love because of how good you think they are, and there are movies SOME people love because of how bad they are. I have to put my two cents in here for this film being so bad it's good. Trust me, it's HORRIBLE. But on certain levels, like on an Ed Wood level, it's great. The plot is half baked and the acting plummets below the level of EVERYONE in Star Wars Phantom Menace. If you happen to be one of those people who doesn't understand why Hasselhoff gets raked over most of his work, then it is very likely you will love this movie. Not to be missed is John Saxon's performance as an albino gang leader. If the producers of this film didn't have their tongues in their cheeks while this film was produced then I say they are masters of schlock. Otherwise, "Final Alliance" rates among the top adolescent wish-fulfillment wet dream films of all time. Hasselhoff and his pet puma- that says it all.
Da chu tou (1979)
Saturday afternoon classic
This was one of the first kung fu movies my little brother and I saw on TV, also along with "Kid with the Golden Arm" and "Executioners of Shaolin". The cheese factor is high, but the action is high-octane. This movie was made in the prime of Hong Kong's cookie-cutter formula era and doesn't get REAL creative in terms of story. Some really rough camera work and editing makes it look like some scenes were done on the fly, but the action was what made it stick in my memory. The choreography is a little stiff in some places, but the on-screen energy and overall fight count make it fluff entertainment to some and a classic to others. In general, it's a must see for the nostalgically inclined and die-hard kung fu fans, but probably a let down for the younger generations who are used to modern HK offerings and the Matrix.
