The Prey (1983)
* (out of ****)
Six teens hike up to the Colorado mountains for a spot of rock climbing, only to fall victim to a badly burned cave-dwelling gypsy.
Dull "Friday the 13th" clone with bad acting, slack pacing and a boring use of wildlife stock footage. Picks up a bit in its second half, and caps off with a nicely atmospheric 'twist' ending, but the rest is just too amateurish to be taken seriously.
Final Exam (1981)
* (out of ****)
Painfully boring "Halloween" imitation about a bunch of collegians being killed off by a knife-wielding menace on their deserted campus.
Atmospheric direction and a likeable cast are the only reasons to check out this utterly worthless piece of garbage . . . and gorehounds beware, the film is virtually bloodless.
Phantasm (1979)
** 1/2 (out of ****)
Two brothers stumble upon the secret of "The Tall Man", a caretaker at the local cemetery who is in reality an alien from another dimension, sent to Earth to capture humans and send them back to his home planet as dwarf slaves.
Ridiculously convulted, this very ambitious low-budget horror-fantasy has surprisingly good special effects (including one wicked brain-drilling silver sphere) but suffers from slack pacing and too many logic loopholes.
Recommended, but for very serious horror fans only.
