The Regime: All Ye Faithful (2024)
Best episode but disappointing show overall.
The best episode of a disappointing season. This episode was evidence of how much better the whole series could have been. The British accents in Eastern Europe, the aimlessness of it all, putting a relationship at the forefront of the story that we can't relate to or care about. It wanted to be a smart series & it had flickers of good ideas but was a fumbling mess most of the way. This episode however got real & was very well executed. I sometimes appreciated how wild the show was willing to get, and I appreciate trying new things in art and television. But this show needed to be far more grounded in real events and history to resonate. Ridiculous is fine in choice moments. Not the whole damn time.
Reality (2023)
Fantastic story well performed & love how they used real elements.
Creative approach to using the real transcript & images from what happened mixed in with really strong performances. Tons of tension & made all of its points without ever being heavy handed. Highly recommend this. Since we are in a divided country, I would take low scores with a grain of salt. It's probably trolls. This is a very well made film which I caught early at an FYC screening. I have nothing to do with the production. I admire the filmmaker's approach especially since I love films about true events & I'm often tempted to google what really happened. This film presented the real events with so much integrity, I felt no need to google, it answered my curiosities.
The Menu (2022)
Some thrills, but ultimately empty
It's a miserable movie trying to make a point about class & the culinary world. Parasite, the Bear, White Lotus all do a better job at that. If you're going to have so much misery and suffering in a movie that we the audience have to endure, then at least have a compelling point to make. There's nothing new here. Angry joyless man takes out his anger and joylessness on others with the help of his little restaurant cult. All of the characters are completely one dimensional. All non white characters are ornamental. Nothing new is being said here. So many plot holes & missed opportunity for something unexpected. Annoying these things get financed.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Sharp wit, fresh take, quality show
This show is very well written with a delightful cast. One thing that really stands out is the way characters talk about the MCU, it's the funniest take I've seen in any Marvel series in terms of commentary on other super heroes & events. The acting, storyline, and directing is all good quality and very engaging. It's so backwards and disturbing that just because there's a female lead - and she's commented on being a woman - as if that's so destroying- it's getting all of these negative reviews. Why can't they handle that? What is wrong with these people??? The show is great and I highly recommend you actually watch it.
