El hijo de la novia (2001)
Sincerity and Subtlety
It is strange that out of the hundreds of movies that are released each year, this low distribution, foreign, overlooked picture is so great. There was no hype about it. It had me in tears and laughter. How many films genuinely move you in this way?
Lawless Heart (2001)
spine tinglingly subtle
a film about the truth of life - at first I thought it was boring because I am so conditioned by Hollywood etc. even British films that have wowed in the past five years are shown to have a certain fakeness by this one. Enjoy. I think it would make my perfect date movie.
Metropolis (1927)
Beyond Belief
This film was of such aesthetic genius (scenery, silent acting and imagination) that, without wanting to sound too Christian, I felt it was the nearest I had got to a miracle. It works on so many intellectual levels without being obtuse that the mind is left spinning to the sound a beautifully composed score.
