American Psycho (2000)
An incredibly odd film that just doesn't deliver
I found myself waiting with hope that this film might just pick up but apart from about 10 minutes, this film is as flat as glass and as dull as ditch water.
Don't get me wrong, Bale's acting was very good and he played the part of a creepy weirdo very well and the script was clever and contained many literal turns and twists. It's just the film itself lacked lustre, it had all the good hallmarks of a film that, after the first 20 steady minutes of introductions and getting the viewer embroiled in the plot turns into an absolute scorcher... But sadly after 20 minutes nothing really happened, and after 30, then 40... nothing. I did find myself hooked, hooked on waiting for something to happen... but it just didn't arrive.
Maybe the book was good, I don't know I have not read it. But I'm guessing that the subtle mind tinkering that many horror and thriller writers achieve in their novels just didn't transgress to the silver screen and instead you are left being delivered the plot outright without having to think... this pretty much left nothing else in the tin.
Shame, I had real high hopes for this film due to it's IMDb rating, but instead it just didn't deliver on the expectation.
Argo (2012)
Utterly boring American drivel... How many Oscars???
Well Argo just goes to show that if you make a movie about how great the US is over the tyranny of the Islamic world, you'll win a handful of Oscars guaranteed!!!
The first few scenes got a bit of tension going and actually showed some promise that the film might deliver but it soon faded away and was quickly replaced by just endless boring twaddle... I think I fell asleep twice!
I was so looking forward to this film but it just didn't go anywhere! I would like to be able to write more but there's just not much to say. I'm sure the real life story behind the film was very heroic but this certainly is not the film to tell it.
As for Aflek, frankly his performance was flat and lack lustre, it was almost like the whole film was a private joke between the actors "lets see if we can bag an Oscar or two without actually performing!"
Watch the film as this is of course just my opinion, however take my advice and just don't pay to see it... you will thank me and if you thought the film was great, well hey you got a cheap night or entertainment!!!
Dennis the Menace (1993)
One of the best Sunday afternoon films there is!
First of all it has to be said that this film has no relationship whatsoever with the cartoon comic 'Dennis the Menace' you may have read as a child. With that out of the way you can now enjoy the film for what it is, not how you may have remembered a character from your youth.
The film is superbly cast with Walter Matthau playing the grumpy old 'Mr Wilson' and a young Mason Gamble playing the role of 'Dennis'. Matthau really is on top form as strong as he was with Jack Lemmon in the 'Grumpy Old Men' films. Gamble is fantastic as the adorable but mischievous 5 year old and shows an acting ability way beyond his years with superb comic timing and wonderful catch lines.
Full of laughs, crazy antics, hilarious childhood expression and the odd touching moment too, this is an entertaining film that keeps on giving scene after scene. It's a Sunday afternoon film to watch either on your own or with the kids, either way it won't disappoint!
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Mixed reviews but surprisingly good!!!
Some poor reviews on IMDb and a 2 star 'average' rating in the TV guide did not bode well for this film but I was pleasantly surprised! Lots of tension, moody lighting and good filming made this an enjoyable film to watch. The limited number of cast also helps to close the world in around them particularly the main character so you do start to feel 'uncomfortable' for them in that situation. It's easy to put yourself into the place of the character & you start to experience a real sense of unease!!! Don't get me wrong, it's no academy winner but ratings of 1/10 have left me clueless as to what folks want from a tense thriller? Great to watch on your own and to turn up the suspense, turn off the lights & unlock the front door... I guarantee you will be scrabbling for the keys & the light switch before you're half way through!!!
