Black Bart (1975)
A comedy that brings tears to your eyes
Genuine tears, not from laughter. Whoever wrote this hopefully lost their job. I wonder if Lou Gossett and Steve Landesberg(who later became Dietrich on Barney Miller) are awful. I would have loved to have had a Mel Brooks commentary to this on the DVD. It would surely be funnier than the dialog. Even the sets don't seem right. I don't think they could have got this on TV if they had put a horse's head in bed with a TV executive. I've seen few failed pilots but if many of them are like this, Hollywood is - well considering some of what DOES make it on TV maybe we shouldn't be surprised. Hopefully the people who make DVD's will never make a mistake like this again.
The Naked Prey (1965)
Great movie, typical Hollywood treatment
I haven't seen this movie in years. I remember seeing it when it came out with my family and we enjoyed it very much. We weren't offended by it(we are black). Just a well done movie with the usual Hollywood treatment of foreign culture; white man triumphs over foreigners/non white men. Done most recently by Tom Cruise in Samurai and countless karate movies wherein a white guy goes to Asia and beats the crap out of various Asians in their own sport/fighting system. If you want to see some really ridiculous racism in the movies watch Tarzan movies made in the 40's; the natives are sometimes heavily made up white men!
Incidentally there is a movie called Run of the Arrow with Rod Steiger which has the exact same plot as Naked Prey but it takes place out west with Indians instead of Africans.
