Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Rooster Needed More Screen Time
I wanted more from Rooster. Unfortunately his character felt a little thin to me. I think a scene with Rooster (Miles Teller) and his mother (Meg Ryan) would have fleshed out the animosity between him and Maverick.
Good Joe Bell (2020)
Doesn't Quite Get There With Its Message
My initial impression of this movie going in was that it's a story about bullying and its effect on the victim. Instead, it was mostly about a father trying to atone for his own failure as a parent. The character is neither likable nor does he provide any inspiration.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Less is More
As my title says, Less is More. Instead of a story driven film the producers decided to go with a huge, over the top, CGI heavy movie. It's essentially The Mummy meets Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean. The end result is a confusing and meandering repeat of plots, situations and characters we've already seen in past films.
Is this a movie I would watch again? No. And while I like both of the lead actors, they were the only good thing in this movie.
Definitely a missed opportunity for a cool franchise. This could have been much better. Too bad.
The Wrong Cheerleader Coach (2020)
Those Reading Glasses!
New drinking game! Every time the father in this movie takes his reading glasses on and off have a shot!
Fantasy Island (2020)
An Incredible Reboot of a 70's TV show!
Wow! This movie will have you on pins and needles. Who would have thought that that they could turn a campy 70's TV show into a modern horror film? This movie features a likable cast of characters and an intriguing plot with a twist ending that will stay with you for days! It just goes to show that you don't need a huge budget and A-list actors to make a great movie. The only reason I gave it 9 stars is that it could have been a little longer. Nonetheless, Fantasy Island is sure to become a horror classic. I can't wait for the sequel!
A Winter Rose (2014)
A Very Good B Movie
I enjoyed this little movie. It definitely had heart and soul and captured the essence of being a struggling musician. The moral of story being, those who are gifted sometimes just need to be in the right place at the right time to get noticed.
I agree with another reviewer here that this movie could have been much better though with a more experienced director. Parts of the story lacked exposition and character development. In fact, I really wanted to see more of the darker side of Winter Rose. Unfortunately, these darker life experiences are mostly implied or glossed over one of which was a cameo scene with Billy Zane.
Kim Whalen is also a very pretty actress. Most of the movie though her face is hidden behind her long hair. I'm not sure if that was deliberate on the part of the filmmakers, but being able to see her facial expressions would have made her character more present and likable. I also wanted to hear more of her singing!
One last gripe I had was with the editing. It was abrupt in places that unfortunately made the movie feel amateur at times.
On a positive note Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas) is excellent as the boyfriend/manager of Rachal Love and plays the part with a lot of feeling.
Interestingly, there are a few cameo appearances in the movie including Edward Furlong, Billy Zane and Andy Dick. Even one of the early James Bond actors, George Lazenby, makes a very brief cameo.
Interstellar (2014)
2001: A Space Odyssey This Movie Is Not
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I was excited. It looked to be an epic sci-fi story in the vein of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Not even close. Instead, I would liken this movie more to the awful sequel to 2001, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, which is actually much better than Interstellar.
This movie is a perfect example of a director not being reigned in by his producer. What you get here are almost three hours of an immensely drawn out story that is incredibly boring and overwrought for its own good. In fact, my wife walked out of the room after 30 minutes. Hoping that the story would eventually pick up, I continued to watch this dud for another half hour, eventually turning off the DVD player to watch something more interesting on regular television. I did watch the second half the next day though. However, my follow up viewing just further confirmed to me just how bad this movie is.
Again, the nearly 3 hour length of this movie is its major problem. They could have easily cut 45 minutes out. In fact, the first 45 minutes of this movie is spent trying to develop the relationship between the father (Matthew McConaughey) and his young daughter, which is a major part of the story. Unfortunately, all that character development fails, because in the end, you could care less. In fact, throughout the entire movie Matthew McConaughey drivels in this low, gravel voice that, after 15 minutes or so, became frustratingly annoying to listen to.
Anne Hathaway plays a scientist. Unfortunately, her character is cold and aloof and you end up not caring about her either. Her important scientific training also gets thrown out along the way as she trades that all in for an emotional attachment that puts her mission in peril. I was like, "Huh? Really?" Would her character have made THAT decision? Oh, that's right. She's a woman. They get emotional.
Same goes for John Lithgow, Matt Damon and Michael Cain. All are capable actors. But in this movie they are forgettable, cardboard cut out characters who, again, the viewer could care less about.
The visuals are interesting. However, bad dialog and overly lengthy scenes make this movie drag on far too long. In fact, Interstellar even borrows a scene from 2010 involving the mission's artificially intelligent computer HAL 9000 (here, a robot) and its willingness to do whatever its human masters ask of it.
The last 10 minutes of this movie is completely superfluous. It reminded me a lot of the ending to A.I. where the movie ends with a "feel good" epilogue. Same thing going on here.
Sometimes less is more. A two hour movie with faster pacing, a tighter story and better character development would have made a galaxy of difference here. I'm not sure if this would have necessarily made this movie any better in my opinion, just more watchable in one sitting without the viewer's butt getting sore!
To be fair, I would have given this movie 5 stars out of 10. Again, the visuals and premise are interesting. However, the one star is to offset the over abundance of 10 star reviews here - which I don't believe this movie deserves.
Glad I waited for this movie to come out on RedBox. I would have never paid theater prices for what seemed to me to be a nearly three hour director's cut.
