Ma reum (2018)
The worst french film I ever saw !.....and I am french !
The kid is lovely his father is very pleasant the tiny bad guys are funny and the story is OK....
So what's wrong ? the main character is certainly the worst actress you can imagine...After 5 minutes I deeply wanted to strangle her and after a mere 40 minutes I gave up and switched to CNN starring marvelous comedians like Donald Trump or Bolsonaro
The woman who plays the mother is too aged for the part...she's vulgar crudely indecent shallow annoying corny and irritating....she's even scatophile !..Like King Midas in reverse she can change a good average movie into a nice piece of dirt
Her relation with her son is also very disturbing...NOONE in France will call her 10 years old boy "my cat" and when she laid down next to him i thought I was in for a dirty movie !
Please stay away from this junk ! If you want to enjoy a good movie about french preteens there is a must "François Truffaut's l'argent de poche" (in the USA "Small change" or in UK "Pocket Money") a ***** flick where the actress doesn't please herself by making dog sh.. sandwiches !
Austerlitz (1960)
Don't Mess Around with Napoleon !
Believe it or not but it's quite hard to know who the real Napoleon was.....He was worshipped by his followers (He once said "I exempt you to compare me to God" !) and of course hated by his very numerous foes who considered him as a monster and a butcher ....Some painted him as the tender uncle so kind to the poors other like a heartless dictator killer of over one million lives for nothing more than his personal glory.....Abel Gance is known to all as the one who made a silent 'Napoleon" the epitome of the films about french history....so it surprised me that he was still working in 1960....The movie is actually about Napoleon himself ....the famous battle comes at the very end (quite the contrary of Spartacus made the same year whose final battle is the main interest...but a battle costs a lot of dollars and Hollywood could inject 100 times more money than the poor french even if de Gaulle was then ruling the country !)
The beginning of the movie tells us about the days of the so-called Consulat (1800-1804) which all historians agree (for once) to consider as one of the most important years of french history...the scholars who studied those times will be very pleased to meet Talleyrand Fouché Carnot Lannes Cambaceres de Stael and of course Bonny's wife mother and terrible sisters...at the end of part one these sisters urge him to become Emperor...I guess they didn't have to try hard....i liked it when he asks his valet "do you see me as emperor?" and the unintelligent and straight-talking guy answers "why not ? if you were one foot taller?"..Surprise and terrible look of Bonny who suddenly bursts out laughing
Then comes the Coronation (no money no show) and the battle itself (called the battle of the 3 emperors)....compared to the one of the russian movie it is deceiving but the napoleonic strategy is well explained
the acting is quite good....an aging Michel Simon is tiring but the cast includes Jean Marais Orson Welles Martine Carol (a bit miscast as Josephine)...Pierre Mondy is quite convincing as a 35 years old invincible general and wait for Jack Palance as splendid as always !
Désirée (1954)
An epic movie named desire ?
I don't know in the USA but here in the old Europe Marlon Brando is still considered long after his death as the best american movie star who ever lived....partly may be because of his satanic sardonic and satIrical side ? and of course because of his witty egocentrism ?......So it was a gas to discover that he met the biggest satanic and egocentric french leader who ever lived ! I must say i did not pay a great attention to the story obsessed that i was with his interpretation of Bonaparte.....Roughly speaking he was ok ....Brando has a distant resemblance of the young Bonny but he has the same overbearing look than his model and that's the main point....The mistake is that Brando is too polite too classy too much "Versailles"....Under his funny hat his unmatched intelligence and his unparalleled power the real Napoleon was actually rude brittle and completely ignoring pup manners ! still a good film and the beauty of Merle Oberon is a bonus...if you like this story watch "Le destin fabuleux de Desirée Clary" a 1942 film made and with Sacha Guitry ...(another one who had a terrific opinion of himself !)
Tatie Danielle (1990)
A 90 Minutes bore !
The Best thing in this movie is its subtitle : "You don't know her...but she already hates you"......quite appealing I must confess but it is a misleading advertising...if you're looking for someone evil it is sure the guy who is in charge of the advertising !....the old lady is supposed to be wicked and nasty but her complete lack of personality ruins what she tries to be...I kept thinking throughout this endless film about Barbara Stanwyck or Ruth Gordon and what they could have made of this character....Catherine Jacob is perfect as she always is but that's all...
Danton (1983)
Excellent Acting in a movie full of historical mistakes
I've read that Wajda made this flick as a metaphor of the Polish disctatorship
May be it is but as a french historian i could not care less....what struck me is the complete lack of truth in this film....it is crystal clear that Wajda has never studied his subject (much complicated i must say) and repeats brillantley all the lies told about the leaders of the French Revolution
No Danton was not a man of moderation...he was a blood-thirsty hard liner who endorsed the slaughter of the swiss gard in august 92 ...the month after he refused as minister of the Justice to stop the massacres in the french jails which made about 1500 victims including 200 proests
He was also corrupted in the worst way possible receiving money from England ....It is when Robespierre prevented him of stealing army funds that he became his worst ennemy.....when he says in the movie "I am the people of France" it is just a big joke...he is the imperialist bourgeoisie representative pushing the war on in order to loot he victims and to get rid of the violent mob who never saw much of the benefits of the revolution
Robespierre pictured as the bad guy was actually was vehemently attacked because of his probity for himself as well as for France (his nickname was and still is "the incorrptible")...because he wanted to end the slavery ...and the us of a ceiling price for the bread ....all those decisions infuriated of course the upper class who evetually killed him ithout a trial.....a superhighway was then opened up for the wholly corrupt Directoire and for...Napoleon Bonaparte
Everything else in the film is first class....Ceratinly Depardieu best movie..
