Get Well Soon (2001)
Very enjoyable.
In my opinion, Get Well Soon follows an intelligent, unique direction and is surely worth a watch. Courtney Cox and Vincent Gallo have an interesting, believable, albeit slightly odd, connection and this works well throughout the film. Both roles have been cast well, as even though the characters don't seem too complicated, their is clearly a lot of depth to each of them which would be difficult to act. The storyline is completely different to other rom-coms (if you insist on placing this film in that category), and the way some people are reporting of predictability and repetition in GWS, is complete madness. If nothing else, this storyline is certainly unique. You could say the film has a dark side, and I agree, but that is definitely intentional and makes it much more interesting. Aren't you all getting sick of unrealistic romance? The fact that the two main characters aren't loved-up from the beginning is a bonus for me, as it makes the whole thing more enjoyable to watch as the various, wacky plots unfold on-screen. This film has been subtly directed to suit the plot lines; there are no fancy-shmancy camera shot sequences, which works well and makes the whole thing more believable. The script was not written by genius's, and perhaps you won't find the story completely relevant but if you don't find this film remotely eyecatching and funny, there is something wrong with you! There was definitely not substantial credibility given when it first came out in 2001.
I can watch it time and time again for the wackiness of the characters and the comical twists which surprise me a bit more every time. And for these reasons, I give this film a well deserved 8/10.
Seven Pounds (2008)
Undescribable, heartwarming on all fronts.
It baffles me how anybody can say a bad word about this film; the standard of acting... the mysterious, highly intelligent and gripping storyline... the amazingly thought-out scene sequence... the tearful scriptwriting... it all combines to make this film a definite 10/10. I have always liked films with a twist or two, I like a film to be unpredictable and trigger some emotions. Well, this film certainly did that. First of all, the cast members are all clearly highly trained and the best at what they do. Will Smith has always intrigued me as an actor, with his versatile acting ability. However, in my opinion, this film is far beyond what he has shown us before. There was no second-hand casting, as every person does an amazing job throughout the film, which is necessary for the heart-wrenching script/story. If the actors were not up to scratch, I dread to think what the outcome of Seven Pounds would have been like. The story is unexplainable, and I don't want to give anything away but the quality of the writing must have taken SUCH a massive amount of time and effort to produce, because the end result really has amazed the entire world. The way the characters all connect, and the story unfolds itself, is what can only be described as truly magnificent scriptwriting. I would love to have a conversation with the producers about how they connected everything together and tied all the loose strings up, because the story is very complicated and hard to get your head around, which is why you need to concentrate when watching. It is definitely not another Legally Blonde!
What makes the movie so astounding is the believability of the chemistry between actors. As I've said, Smith delivered in this performance and truly excelled himself for the role. However, his performance wouldn't have been as interesting to watch, if it was not shown to link in with the other characters, and the emotional relationships he has with them all. Of course, the most real of these relationships being the one which develops between him and Rosario Dawson, who plays Emily Posa. Another role well worth paying attention to, is Barry Pepper, who plays Dan. I found his role immensely realistic as Will's best friend, and thought Pepper did an excellent job which could easily be overshadowed by the other characters.
All in all, it is a must-see. I would recommend the film to anyone who enjoys drama and who doesn't mind shedding a few tears!
Seven pounds is unquestionably 10/10!
Sex and the City (2008)
Amazing film.
I personally don't think the movie let the series down, as many are saying. I think the film has it's slight flaws, but all films do, right? I think the characters have picked up their roles excellently well, considering it had been years since the series ended. Some people are saying the characters have clearly changed, but in my opinion, this is a realistic trait to the movie. Of course the characters are going to change in three years time; people seem to be forgetting that we haven't been shown the time between series-movie. The casting can't be faulted. All of the old, classic characters are as charming as ever and the new characters such as Louise, bring a little bit more joy to the heartfelt plot.
The scripting in the film is very clever, and the balance between drama/comedy is as perfect as it was during every episode of the show. It doesn't seem to last over 2 hours, as I am so engrossed in the storyline, time after time watching it. The direction is similar to that of the series; Michael-Patrick King did an amazing job. A very worthwhile, interesting film. Can't wait till SATC2 :)
