Superman Returns (2006)
Why do movie makers continue to mess with comic lore?
Superman was created by Siegel and Shuster. These two men created what was the genre of science fiction and turned into superheroes. Many creators over almost 70 years have come and gone, but have always respected the original concept. John Byrne was asked to re-start the Superman legacy, he did but kept it extremely close to the original, as I'm sure the editors of DC made sure the iconic image of Superman stayed the same.
So what extremely annoys me is when the enormous ego of Bryan Singer wants to put his name in the history books to be known as the man who gave Superman a child. Superman is not his to mess with. After 2 X-Men movies he would know not to do such a thing to the Superman mythology. Singer knew exactly that he would upset the faithful, but it seemed he didn't care. Not only does he give Superman a child but the child kills someone. Superman doesn't kill. Lex Luthor kills millions of people, but Superman will not take a human life, and yet Singer allows for the child in his very first act of super powers to kill another human being.
The outfit is a disgrace, his haircut abysmal. Why didn't the editors of DC step in and tell Singer no you cannot change the story this much? The movie looks fantastic, too bad Singer's ego got in the road. Sam Rami could do it, he could just take Spiderman from the pages and put it on screen. But Singer wanted it to say Superman created by Siegel, Shuster and Singer, and many might think this is a minor thing to be upset about but, it just ruined the entire movie return of the greatest superhero in history.
Supurigan (1998)
The best Anime since Akira
This movie is a roller coaster ride of awesome action sequences, fantastic characters and visually stunning animation.
The movie is based around an elite International peace keeping force known as ARCUM, who has a special agent in every country, Spriggans. The story revolves around Spriggan Japan, Yu, who's past demons resurface to challenge him in a race to find an ancient artifact.
Part Akira, part Indiana Jones, Spriggan is non stop action but with a great story. Unbelievably entertaining...
The Quick and the Dead (1995)
Imagine if they tried to make this movie today!
Sam Raimi is the king of fun and shows it with an awesome cast and a very smart film which makes fun of the genre.
If you check the cast I wonder if the movie would ever been able to be made today as it contains Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman and Di Caprio.
Angel (1999)
Angel just gets better and better
My favourite tv show of all time just seems to get better and better. Nearly every episode there is a surprise twist, action, adventure, romance and a vampire atoning for his sins is an awesome storyline that could continue for years to come.
The supporting cast are excellent actors and the series although a drama, action, horror, has the funniest lines I have ever heard.
In the world of Buffy and Angel Vampires are soulless creatures that are always evil, (there is no Anne Rice good types) except for one, Angel who had his soul returned to him by a Gypsy curse. The guilt he feels from the countless lives he took while he was without his soul builds up and he tries to atone for his actions. The only way he will return to evil is if he expierences one moment of TRUE happiness. Unfortunatley he fell in love with the Vampire Slayer Buffy Sommers (ironic eh?!) and he lost his soul. Buffy was forced to kill him, and he was sent to hell.
But higher beings called the powers that be, brought him back as he was prophecised to do many things, (many remain unclear). He is teamed up with another individual the powers have seen as needing atoning for their crimes who has the visions, a direct link to the powers, together they are put on a path of righeneous.
But along the way many things happen, fun, romance, sex, action, new friends, old enemies, old loves, new loves.
Angel is the best show on tv. Watch it. NOW!
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Outrageously entertaining
It is obvious Tarantino and Rodriguez have made their boyhood action, horror, dream movie come to life. And I for one love it. Its just plain fun from start to finish and extremely funny.
Two criminals running from the law with their latest heist must escape to Mexico. The only way to get across the border is to hijack a preacher and his family. The Mexican kingpin that will secure safe passage for them, tells the brothers to meet him at a bar. Unknown to everyone is the bar is run by evil vampires.
Action, comedy, monsters, blood, guts, a Vietnam flashback story, beautiful women, and a stellar cast makes this film outrageuous.
Sit back, grab a pizza, some beer and the boys and watch it. Now!
