Their Second Chance (1997)
Good story for folks who believe in second chance romances!
Wagner and King had really good chemistry. Their characters are really endearing and you are rooting for them throughout the film. Both are good actors and really do well in the world of TV. Both actors look really good for their ages too. The script is a bit weak (i.e. Wagner is a little too pessimistic but she's a very good actress, so its not that noticeable) and the sibling rivalry parts are annoying. For example, Wagner's son has beef with his older adopted sister and Wagner's older sister was too skeptical of King's character. His character was too "likable" despite his actions so it's hard to believe the sister's distrust of him. It would have been better if the tension solely focused on Wagner and King (i.e. Wagner resisting King throughout most of the movie, or making King's character a little more flawed) and all the other characters were for them, despite the history because they see that they are meant for each other. Overall, the acting from the cast is good. It's a sweet film to watch on a rainy day.
6.5 out of 10 stars.
The Star Maker (1981)
I enjoyed this movie...a good watch for die-hard Hudson and Griffith fans!
I haven't done a review in years, but I saw this movie on YouTube. It's campy and cheesy, but it worked for me. The script is weak, but luckily, Hudson worked well with the women involved so that really helped, given the storyline! I really enjoyed Hudson in it. I bet he wasn't thrilled with the script, but he always committed to any role that he did. He was committed to the Danny character and had great chemistry with Melanie Griffith. I believed their relationship and loved the interactions between the two. I forgot how good of an actress Grffith is. She and Hudson carry the film. Susanne Pleshette looked beautiful, but her character is very under-developed and poorly written. She literally did the best with what she had. The ladies who played the mother and daughter were the weakest line. They had NO chemistry whatsoever. They were poorly cast. I think the daughter was chosen based on her looks. I would have given the movie a 7 if it wasn't for them. All and all, if you loved Rock and Melanie, The Star Maker, is a hidden gem.
Lamhe (1991)
Yashji's greatest!
With this movie, Yash Chopra finally proves that he is one of the greatest Hindi movie directors of all time. Lamhe tells a story about love, passion, and moments...moments for one's love to grow. Anil and Sridevi create magic on screen. I love watching them together. They're both so talented and passionate--especially in this movie. (Sridevi has an AMAZING wardrobe, especially in the first half.) Anupam and Waheeda are brilliant in their supporting roles. Anupamji is such a delight to watch--he's so funny in Lamhe. This movie, which is considered a classic today, was a huge flop when it came out in 1991 because of the "risque" subject matter. Yet, early in his career, Yashji took huge risks when he directed movies like Kabhi Kabhie, Silisa, Waqt and Deewaar. Sadly, he became more commericial with 1997's Dil To Pagal Hai (Crap). Lamhe is seriously Yashji's best film...so check it out ASAP!
Sholay (1975)
Great, Great Movie!
I rented "Sholay" from an Indian store around where I live and I loved every moment of it! It's funny, sad, romantic, and very ACTION PACKED! Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan have excellent chemistry. I loved the the Buddy Buddy song they sing together, it's really cute and funny but "Holi Ke Din" is the BEST song! I was particularly touched by the "silent" love between Bachchan and his real life wife Jaya Bhaduri. The movie is well acted, Bachchan's character reminded me of James Dean and Steven McQueen. And I was haunted by Bhaduri's performance. On a shallow note, the lead men in this movie are some serious eye candy, especially Bachchan. I was thought he was a handsome guy back in the day, (Hell, he still is!) but in Sholay, he's so incredibly GORGEOUS! I mean, I was drooling over him! This movie is a must see for Bachchan fans.
P.S. Parents, this movie is VERY,VERY, VERY violent! Children and young adults are killed brutally. It's a PG-13er all the way...
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
God, I love this movie.
I recently took a class about India in college and towards the end of the semester, we watched a few clips from some Bollywood and Tamil movies. I was very moved and inspired by the clips alone! Then, I told my friend (who happens to be Indian) from my work study job that I like Bollywood. So she invited me to an "Indian Movie Night" at her dorm. We watched K3G and I was so touched by it! It was simply wonderful. Most of all, I became a SRK and Kajol fan. Their on-screen chemistry is remarkable! I can't explain it! Anyhoo, I asked my mom for some Bollywood movies for Christmas and one of the movies I got was DDLJ. And let me tell ya'll, it is now my favorite movie of all time. SRK and Kajol shine beyond reason in this flick. The script is excellent, everything is excellent especially the acting and memorable songs! The supporting cast (most notably Simran parents, sister and Raj's dad were figging awesome!) Mr. Amish (sic) Puri, who played Kajol's dad acts wonderfully with just his eyes! One of the funniest lines in the movie is when Raj's friend walks into Simran's dad store and says "Uncle, can I have some beer?!" Gosh, it's the way that cat said the line that made it so FUNNY! After watching it again yesterday, I realized that I love so many Hollywood movies (particularly classic ones) and yet I couldn't state my all time favorite one. But while watching the making of DDLJ (I own the special edition version with two DVD's inside), I became rather teary eyed. I mean, I'm getting teary eyed writing this review at this moment! This film touched not only my heart, but my soul as well. They are so many underlying messages in DDLJ that can strike a cord in a non-Indian's (like me, I'm Nigerian American) soul. In end, I hope people who read this will buy DDLJ, (Renting will be useless, because you'll want to watch it over and over again...) love this priceless gem of a movie, and this goes out to the girls, wanna "come...fall in love" with a cool, crazy, sexy guy like Raj!
PS- THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!
