Reviews
Anger Management (2003)
Tis a funny one, yes...
*SPOILERS...kinda...well, I guess not. You decide, IMDB people.* Saw this one in theatres on opening night here in Canada, and I was definitely looking forward to it. The trailers looked great, and what I got was decent Friday night entertainment when you've got nothing better to do.
Now, I'm a Sandler fan, no doubt, and his movies never fail to deliver a laugh. Seeing a few of the Sandler clan (Turturro, Covert, Herlihy as executive producer)and some SNL alumni (Kevin Nealon) was of course great, but Jack stole the show. I am an even bigger Nicholson fan than I am a Sandler fan, and it was a bit disheartening that Jack can steal a scene from Adam by so much as wiggling his eyebrows.
The flick was a raunchy collection of dick and fart jokes, slapstick comedy and ludicrous cameos. (Take Woody Harrelson as a German transvestite, for instance.) All in all the movie was damn funny. But here we are. Back to the Jack. He was truly great in this, and basically made the movie. This is my favorite Sandler movie so far, but I must say, I'm getting a bit sick of the classic Adam-quiet New Yorker, in the same apartment, with the same friends, getting picked on by some crazy person. He needs to branch, and needs to prove himself more with stuff like Punch-Drunk Love.
Honestly, everything Jack Nicholson touches turns instantly to gold. He can be hilarious, scary, serious and angry all at the same time. He's crazily talented. Seriously, there must be about ten other people on earth walking around whose acting talent was accidently bestowed upon Jack in some otherworldly screwup. There's just something about him, about his commanded onscreen eccentricity that convinces you he can do just about anything, which he can. That's what happened to Anger Management.
Some of my favorite scenes were Jack and Adam singing "I feel Pretty" in a car, whilst holding up traffic on the brooklyn bridge, and Adam and Jack beating on John C. Reilly, a former bully of Adam's character, Dave Buznik. However, the plot was a bit jumpy and never really started to flow well, but the entire nature of the movie just whispered "Pay no attention to the plot, just let the blessed retarded comedy wash over you and make you laugh." It was basically two hours of watching hilarious banter between Adam and Jack, which, in my book, is pure brilliance. It was, however, geared toward a younger audience. (Teens, young twenties, typical Sandler fans) A good example of this is the fact that right in front of me in the theatre, an older couple had come, presumably to get some good Nicholson comedy. They ended up walking out not twenty minutes in. The crowd in the theatre was a motley crew of teens and forty-year olds. The final product was what I consider hilarious, and what some stuck up forty year old finds "vulgar". Unless we are talking about a cool forty year old.
Bottom line: Worth a watch in theatres if you're a Sandler fan, or teenage Nicholson fan (like me), worth a watch at home if you're not. 8.5/10
Very Bad Things (1998)
Guilty pleasures...
*SPOILERS*
I originally bought this movie, not having seen it, because it stars Christian Slater. My friend warned me it was really, really sick, but I never expected this. SO funny and SO sick. It's beyond anything I've ever seen. It's the kind of movie you love, even though you know you shouldn't. You can almost feel the desensitization as you're laughing at Christian Slater getting his head bashed in with a coat rack. I love the man, but that was just funny. Or as you choke on your Pepsi laughing as Daniel Stern is sandwiched between two cars. It is sick, gruesome humor, but it's SO funny. In short, don't watch if you don't already consider yourself a fan of black comedy, and after you watch this, you'll see what black comedy REALLY is.
The plot is basically a bunch of guys celebrating one of their buddies getting married. An "accident" happens concerning a prostitute ordered by Boyd (Christian Slater)and it just gets worse from there. Slater as Boyd is one of the most psychotic characters in a movie you'll ever see. The scary thing is, he rationalizes each death, and you can really see his point. Slater is a VERY convincing psycho, let me tell you that. Great performances given also by Jeremy Piven, Daniel Stern, Leland Orser and Jon Favreau. But what was really brilliant was Cameron Diaz as the bride from hell.
If you love black comedy, take it to the next level with Very Bad Things. You won't be sorry.
True Romance (1993)
You're so cool...
Holy *expletive deleted*. This movie is the absolute greatest. Bar none, the finest movie ever made. I can just watch it over and over again without ever getting bored. Such spellbinding performances are given, it leaves the viewer in awe. Tony Scott directs, and does a fantastic job. The leads, Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette, are perfectly cast and have unbelieveable chemistry.
*SPOILERS*
Clarence and Alabama are a couple of young sweethearts who stumble on a suitcase full of cocaine. What ensues is a kind of new age Bonnie and Clyde adventure, the sort that captivates your attention till the very end. Absolutely amazing.
One of my favorite scenes is the one in which Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper are in a trailer together. Dennis Hopper just has this way of talking that makes you hang on his every word. It's not to be explained.
Another is the uber-cute roller-coaster scene, where Christian Slater is ever so sexy and spouts hilarious one-liners. This movie is the perfect example of how the components of a romance-flick and adventure-flick can exist in the same movie.
The freakin' best. See this movie. Stellar cast, great acting, sexy men...see it.
10 out of 10 stars!
ABC Weekend Specials: The Haunted Mansion Mystery (1983)
*laughs hysterically* Oh...my...God...
Wow! This movie was a riot! I of course sought it out for viewage because of the fact that it features a 13 year old Christian Slater, but I laughed my butt off watching this. It's about the corniest thing you'll see, but you have to cut it some slack because it was made for early 80s morning TV. Definitely worth a watch if you're a Christian Slater fan. (I of course am more than a fan. I love this man with a passion not to be described...) The boy had hair like a brillo pad in this! And...
*SPOILER*
When he's confessing his love for the little girl he becomes friends with, I almost died laughing. It was THE most hilarious thing I've ever seen. Oh God..."I can't explain it. You're more fun than playing baseball with the guys!"
In yo' face every other Christian Slater fan who wasn't a child in the early 80s! I finally found The Haunted Mansion Mystery!
Hitched (2001)
OK then...
What a strange film. It's entirely watchable, and entertaining on a night when you've got nothing else to do. There were some pretty good performances by Sheryl Lee, but what really struck me was Anthony Michael Hall's role in this. Am I the only one who has Hall's loveable, scrawny dork image burned into my brain? His role as the cheating husband was certainly a different one and quite amusing, actually. But I'll always remember him as that hopeless nerd in all of his 80's movies. ("I've never bagged a babe...I'm not a stud...") I honestly wish he could have retained this image, because the heavyset, brawny abusive husband doesn't really suit him, so it made Hitched that much more fake. While watching, I felt myself searching this buffed-up version for signs of the dork we all know and love.
As for the plot, it was lukewarm and a bit unbelievable. Your typical TV movie. Certainly not the best, but then again, not bad.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
Surprisingly Good...
To say the least, I was disappointed the first time I watched this movie, and shut it off 3/4 of the way through. But what you really need to do when watching this is to give it time, and just sit through it and follow the plot.
It has a rather touching story, and although Kevin Costner isn't one of my favorite actors, I still thought he did a pretty good job. Yes, his accent did fluctuate but I don't think this took away from the movie too much.
What made the movie a better experience for me was the appearance of Christian Slater as Will Scarlett. I personally have an avid love for Christian Slater, so seeing him in this was certainly a treat. His character has a bit of a hot temper and adds to the fun of the movie. And you just gotta love that long hair...
Heathers (1988)
Moment of silence please...this movie is the absolute BEST
OK, there are no words to describe how great this movie is. Christian Slater and Winona Ryder are absolutely amazing and perfectly cast in Heathers. This is a must see for everyone who loves a revolutionary teen movie, or any of the actors in this in general.
The writers and directors of this movie had set out to make THE definitive teen angst movie, and they did just that. Heathers is a holy grail that will remain in the hearts of those who truly love it forever.
*SPOILERS HEREIN*
Winona Ryder is excellent as the movie's heroine, Veronica Sawyer. Her thoughts and feelings about what's going on in her life are raw and real. Teens seeing it can connect with her. The plot is basically about teen suicide, and many were worried that after seeing this movie, there would be an outbreak of copycat suicides, but it did just the opposite of that. Heathers shows teens that suicide isn't a cool thing. The film's rather garish approach to it is necessary for this message to be conveyed.
Now, the real spotlight in this film shines on Christian Slater as J.D. He is extremely sexy in his psychotic nature, and he gives the film a dangerous edge. Mr. Slater makes this movie what it is. No other actor could possibly have carried this role out as well as he did. He seems to be psychotic yet apologetic all at the same time. It's a strange web of emotion, and he weaves it flawlessly. Slater has been critisized for his imitation of Jack Nicholson in this role, but the mimicry fits J.D.'s mold perfectly. Congratulations, Mr. Slater. You won my heart with this role.
Bottom line, see this movie, 6 out of 5 stars, it is truly amazing.
