Bliss (2021)
Bliss is in the eye of the beholder...
Apart from the very obvious "drug addiction" problem, the homeless, the poverty and employment issues, the movie aims to dig one of the deeper questions of the mankind...
It asks one of the oldest philosophical questions and uses philosophical, religious and even politic refferences trying to reach the truth. The duality approach is underlined many times... The appearence of Zizek talking about heaven and hell is not a coincidence. A powerful script to say the least.
By the way I loved the acting of Salma Hayek. It was good to see her in one of the roles we are not used to seeing her before...
Bliss is in the eye of the beholder. A solid 7 yes.
I'm Your Woman (2020)
A solid 7 movie
Please wait 10 or 15 minutes to get into the movie after you start watching it. Give it a chance... The feeling of the 70's is amazingly well-done.
Sometimes I found myself watching the background or the furniture used, sometimes the building and sometimes the walker-on's. I won't get lost in details but this easily stands one of the best movies I've seen lately. (For the 5 years time or so) Perhaps I won't be able to describe it but something feels always right with the movie. It's like the groove or the swing. Many directors would kill to get it right I guess:)
If you search for 'really good' movie, you've found one.
Blue (2017)
A true musical tale...
Two 'genuine' musicians, very different characters, perhaps some kinda' geniousity combines them in a very absurd environment that is, Istanbul,Turkey...
Blue is a movie you would most likely want to see, if your soul is not dead yet.
Yavuz is a rock hero for young Turkish rockers for sure... His blueish guitar, his strong, determined words... His musical lyrism, in a strong revolutionary call...
Kerim was and is always a center of attraction in Turkish rock bands, especially for drummers, along with his 'to an extend' funny stories...
They lived a life to be noted.
You can say many things about the documentary, yet after I had watched the doc. in the theatre, I had a chance to interview with the producers, and I had heard about the shortages of recorded footages for both Yavuz and Kerim.
This documentary is a very good effort to spot light on a very unknown 'Turkish blues'; perhaps 'a very lost genre', that can be called as 'underground' music, which was litteraly performed underground in the now closed night club 'Mojo':)
This is a very good effort to note the ones who deserve that 'notation'...
This will always remind me that 'not all the people are the same'...
A good watch.
Solis (2018)
Unbelievably unbelievable
The script writers just wanted to make fun of the viewers I guess. Sometimes I found myself wishing the main character to die just to end his and the viewers' misery...
We cannot relate with the main character any time at any point in the movie. For example I instantly turn my back if a strong beam of light is about to harm my eyes. That is one of the most humanly reflexes humankind has ever known, yet this character opens his eyes to be blind... We always see the character racing with seconds, but we all know he is gonna make it, so it feels like a desperate agitation directly aiming the poor viewer...
It's just a relief when the character dies, and It's no surprise for the viewer ether...
Science fiction which is a genre I love and admire, should not be teken this lightly. I gave it a solid 4 just for the sake of the effort of the player and crew...
Just talk to your grandma with a walkie talkie, her reactions would make a better movie...
El empleo (2008)
Disturbingly real.
There are many things to write yet none would be as shocking and effective like the movie. I've read some opinions about the movie, and I was shocked even more... Hey guys, this movie just criticizes how employees are "used, materialised". It does not target the "employment".
The alternate reality created by the writer is so shocking and disturbing the people might have difficulties facing it. The movie is simply great. And no, if a movie receives 102 awards, let me know it from the start :) , it doesn't bother me, on the contrary I liked it.
Thanks for this great movie, it's not only thought-provoking, it's also 'perception-breaking'. A cinema lover is incomplete if s/he has not watched this movie. Thumbs up.
Auf der anderen Seite (2007)
F-a-t-i-h Akin
Aside from the outstanding work of the director and whole movie crew, one more thing can be said; the name is "F-a-t-i-h" Akin not 'faith'. And it means "the conqueror" in Turkish. :)
Ironically enough it's the name given to F-a-t-i-h Sultan Mehmet Khan after he conquered Constantinapolis and have built a new city over the 7 hills of the metropolis that is "Istanbul". A historic turning point when once an ancient and eastern civilization marked its majestic presence in the west. Since then Turks literally became more and more of western civilization, not by only being influenced by but by influencing, 'manipulating', 'corrupting' and 'contributing' to it. :)
Now Fa-tih conquers all cinemas of Europe with the themes in or about Istanbul, themes about east and west, themes of Europe and Asia, themes about Turks, Romanians, Bulgars, Greek and German people... A truly Turkish character, combining, contradicting, fighting or getting along fine with east or west. ;) Truly life and his 'fate' (but not his faith :P) has a solid sense of humor. :) Go F-a-t-i-h the conqueror! ;)
P.S. Someone should warn IMDb about the automatic correction feature at least here on this page and have it disabled.
Shelter (2008)
A desperate attempt to capture the desperation...
A shelter that can filter air for only 10 people is the last chance of some folks unfortunately more than 10, while an apocalyptic event is approaching. The nature of this event is unknown to the viewers, although the shelter is referred to as "a bomb shelter" a couple of times in the movie. But it is made clear that all remaining outside the shelter would be dead.
My first bet was that it was a nuclear bomb, yet it appears in the final scene, it most likely was not. Because when the shelter door opens, (the time they have spent in the shelter is unknown after the catastrophic event takes place, looks like they've spent only 1 night) you can see the sunlight and no trace of a fallout or nuclear winter. So there is a catastrophe but apparently we don't have to know what's all the fuss about. Because the important thing is how the people - a doctor, a priest, a teacher, a mechanic, a mayor, a cop and an "a**h*le" people of different color and ages (sounds like an entertaining circus right?,but it ain't...) will react when their life is at stake. I'll tell you; these people will yell each other, young ones and women will be protected, sneaky politicians and cops will try to save their a*ses, the remaining men will act like idiots. And some honorable and old folks and without any doubt the priest and his wife will sacrifice their lives for the sake of remaining 10 idiots that are supposed to "re-populate" the earth and form a new civilization. The way they leave the shelter by saying "bye bye" to everyone is the most entertaining part. That's what the movie's all about.
As a conclusion a very interesting idea is wasted with many clichés and poor script, poor dialogs, and some poor acting. I know it's hard to make a movie with a low budget, but this might not be an excuse for a good writer and director, remember Richard Schenkman & Jerome Bixby's 'The man from Earth' or Nuri Bilge Ceylan's 'Distant' . This film is just an an amateur and desperate attempt to capture the desperation of some folks about to die.
Eskiya (1996)
A questioning style with supeb acting.
"Eşkiya" has a very questioning style with superb acting.
The movie is clearly questioning if bandits could be "good", contrary to the known prejudice.;) "Baran", the leading character as a former bandit (eşkiya in Turkish), is someone that represents the 'dying good', still 'pursueing' his one and only love, but the story is still not a love story, on the contrary questioning the todays shallow look on morality, the conflict of east and west in a very Turkish way.
Namely and truly romantic.
Şener Şen, as one of the best actors in Turkish cinema is at his best.
Uğur Yücel, is doing a remarkable job.
You should see this one if not already.
Turkish cinema influenced by "west", thinking of especially the last scene, which is 'still' worth seeing... ;)
Erkan Oğur, a phenomenon for modern Turkish music, is one of the people that "make" the last scene... His name should be remembered if someone talks about this movie anywhere, anytime. ;)
