We Are Your Friends (2015)
I honestly love this movie even though it's not perfect, give it a chance!
I think what a lot of people don't understand is that this movie really touches on a certain time in your life where you are truly coming into your own. It reminds me of my own early 20's and when you don't fully realize how free, young, complicated and beautiful you are. Although it is far from perfect it is still incredibly well done to be able to capture a time in your youth where, yes, you are free and feel limitless but also trapped by your surroundings, while also facing the harsh realities of true adulthood.
All of the characters are branches of each other, some positive and some negative, but all intertwined.
Give this movie a chance and go into it with an open mind and heart, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Sharp Stick (2022)
This movie is beyond ridiculous in the worst way possible. I don't know where to begin with this cinematic miasma but please rest assured that this movie falls flat.
The lead female is portrayed like she is overly naïve and mentally challenged, knowing nothing about sex/love/relationships/intimacy despite the fact that she lives with her incredibly promiscuous sister and former groupie mother. Is she supposed to be portraying an autistic young woman who, at 26, discovers her sexuality? Is her innocence supposed to be endearing? Charming or quirky? Plausibly realistic? I have no idea.
It seems like Lena Dunham started writing a coming of age satire and then forgot halfway thru and tried to make it a 'think piece' and FAILED MISERABLY. Do not waste your time.
12 Feet Deep (2017)
This movie is a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME. Stay away.
I'm not even sure *where* to begin about what an egregious waste of time this movie is, but please do yourself a favor and skip it.
The plot has more holes than swiss cheese and the acting is horrendous. While I can appreciate the symbolism of the claustrophobic space (tumultuous relationship between the 2 sisters) and precarious circumstances (both sisters having been abused as children making their lives veer off in totally different paths and fighting off the possibility of an unpleasant watery death), it just does not flow with any cohesion or realism.
The corrupt ex-con janitor is laughably cliched with horribly wooden acting and in the end tries to redeem herself but at that point you are just waiting for the credits to roll.
I appreciate that it's based on a true story but how far of a leap did the writers take to overly-dramatize it in this way? Please do yourself a favor and skip this movie. It will be an hour and a half of your life you will never get back.
Paradise City (2021)
I only watched for Fairuza Balk....and not even she could save this!
I only watched for Fairuza Balk and not even she could save this ridiculously trite trainwreck of a series. The acting is downright ludicrous, the plotlines were hideously contrived and uninteresting. And the *very obvious* "symbolism" of the whole 'deal with the devil' aspect is spectacularly BORING. The actress who plays 'Capricorn' in multiple different parts is so shockingly bad and one-note that I question her comprehension of the material. She's annoyingly confrontational while being NOT AT ALL intimidating or scary. Or even moderately interesting.
The desperate faux-drama that is this show is turned into a dreary and humorless farce by all the horrendously bad acting and poorly written lines. ALL of this I blame on it's creator/writer/director Ash Avildsen *who cast himself* in it as a fedora wearing hipster that is souless, hard edged 'Be warned, I'm super mean and I will exploit your vulnerabilities to get you to be your best', Emperor of Passive Aggressive Negative Reinforcement....and named the character Levi Svengali! SVENGALI. Seriously??? Give me a break.
I've had more interesting (and ultimately productive) bouts of food poisoning and stomach flu than this miasma of poorly written/acted/directed visual diarrhea.
PS. Fairuza is hilarious with the terrible lines she's given and Mark Boone Junior is a delight as the flustered 'surrogate grandfather' character. That's it. These two actors can split the ONE STAR given to this hideously unimaginative and cliched tripe.
Honeyglue (2015)
One of the WORST MOVIES I've ever seen
While I thoroughly appreciate the attempt of a love story that includes LGBTQ characters, narratives and gender nonconforming aspects, this movie does NOT do it justice. The wooden acting, the terrible writing, the cliched genres are desperate at best and exceedingly cringe-y at worst, and is entirely too much to cram into one poorly executed film that is absolutely riddled with plot holes. I am a fan of Zach Villa but honestly his charm came across stilted and wasn't present enough to save the movie. I've never heard of Adriana Mather before but after seeing her clunky and one-note performance in this as a yearning-yet-dying teen, it makes me want to avoid her altogether. Her vocal-fry voice is only made more intolerable as the movie goes on with the addition of brain damaged slurred speech, that makes her sound drunk and mentally inept all at the same time. I truly wanted to like this film but could barely get through it. I can somewhat appreciate the attempt of it as a whole, but when presented in such a one dimensional, shoddy and unwieldy manner, kinda negates any respectable approach to unconventional love stories.... Please avoid this film at all costs unless you want to feel like it's 2 hours of your life you will never get back.
The Wedding Guest (2018)
Excellent and thought provoking film!
I'm not sure why this movie has such a low rating and bad reviews. It is NOT a thriller, it's a drama with a dark edge. Two characters meet and begin to fall for each other, both somewhat knowing a future together is relatively impossible due to the surrounding complicated circumstances.
And let's not ignore the blatant sexism and double standard of the subplot... Samira was not given a choice in her future so she took a HUGE risk to gain her independence and accepted the consequences of those actions. Were people expecting that *not* to be messy? Both characters were eventually accepting of each other's peculiar backgrounds and complex presence. This film is not a "thriller" and certainly not a romance in the conventional sense. I think it is brilliantly executed and the pace is perfect. The 2 main actors played their roles perfectly in this film and there really could not have been a different outcome. Accept it for what it is and enjoy the story as it unfolds. If you want an extremely happy (and unrealistic ending) go watch a Disney cartoon.
Tales of the City (2019)
Let's take a pretty lesbian and make her look "more" lesbian by adding a stupid and unflattering baseball cap
God a l m i g h t y.... Stay away! Just NO. This "reboot, or whathaveyou, is just beyond abysmal. It resembles NOTHING of the books or series original spirit. Please spare yourself. It'll be several hours of your life you'll never ever get back.
In the end, you'll probably hate it and also wonder who the hell hired the wardrobe stylist for selecting that UTTERLY RIDICULOUS baseball hat for Ellen Page's character... the only thing more annoying than the stilted acted, deplorable writing and tepid story line is the presence of a totally useless and unflattering baseball cap that her character wears throughout the entire series. Its just garish and unnecessary. Like some middle aged straight white guy producer wasn't sure if Ellen's character was "lesbian enough", they decided to add this totally cliched totem. Ugh.... its all a total waste of time.
365 dni (2020)
One star for the lead's hotness, one star for the beautiful filming locations...
While it's not the worst movie *I've* ever seen, like the numerous reviews say here on IMDb, "365 Days" on Netflix is hands down the most interesting 'SkinaMax' type film that I've ever subjected myself to... With it's somewhat stilted acting and numerous plot holes, I kept watching and couldn't look away. It was mesmerizingly bad. Like a "dramatic" adult movie that takes itself wayyyy too seriously and yet you don't turn it off. BUT... the sex scenes are pretty hot and the filming locations are gorgeous! If you have 2 hours to waste and feel like watching a movie that you can laugh at, that's also boner-worthy, then this sexy dumpster fire of a movie is for you! ;) :P
