El espíritu de la colmena (1973)
Spirit of Beehive
What a thriller. Ana, playing one of the younger girls, truly makes this film what it is. She is a beautiful little girl that touches the audience with her innocence and curiosity. I was touched by this film as one may imagine to never wanting to locate a man like frankenstein. Ana, on the other hand, had a mission - to find him. When she first meets the guy who jumps off the train, she believes it's him and brings him food. This is a turning point in the film, and she thinks she finally discovered who was living in the little brick house. Little did she know it wasn't him, and later on comes to terms and finds him. I believe the mushroom, that the father shows her in the beginning is really important to the film. He tells her and her sister that it is poisonous and should never be eaten. One can draw the parallel that though this mushroom is poisonous, it can only be so when eaten. I feel this is the same about frankenstein. Though he could kill, if one approached him with such innocence as Ana did, then he becomes the opposite. There are a lot of parallels to be drawn from this film that leaves one thinking in the end. Overall, it was a great film, and very exciting to watch.
La otra conquista (1998)
The other conquest
What a brilliant director Carrasco is for filming this with so much emphasis on how the aztecs really were. The dialect between them, and the location of the shooting was magnificent. I had the privalage of speaking with Carrasco himself, and apparently the film wasn't so easy to produce as many would think. A seven year, task filled journey led to the release of this film. Being the highest grosing film in Mexican history, I can certainly understand why. I really enjoyed every minute of the film, as there was much emotion evoked throughout it. It is apparent that Carrasco spent countless hours in perfecting his film, from the costumes, to the overall accuracy of language. I also feel that each character was placed in a very appropriate scene, and every one fit in nicely. Overall I would highly recommend this film to anyone, especially those who do not know much about the history of Mexico. Good job Carrasco!
Dom za vesanje (1988)
Fantastic movie
Truly a touching movie. It makes one take a brief look into a world that when watching, one may not be very aware of. It adds a bit of drama and humor, from the crazy cousin to the drunk man. Perhan evolves a lot throughout the film, which adds to his character. He starts out as a young boy, with not merely any responsibilities. Then things suddenly change when his sister becomes ill. He essentially matured what appears to be 6-10 years in the movie, as he becomes more of an inspirational character than anything. His tel-pathetic powers emulate the ending, as he goes to kill the one person who betrayed not only him, but his family as well. I really enjoyed the ending, as it left me with a bit of sorrow feeling. It appears that his son, whom which he rescued and essentially saved his life, is going to live the same life perhan did, that of growing up with a grandmother. Overall, it was a fantastic film.
Yuki yukite, shingun (1987)
Emperors March
I was very open minded going into this film, as it was a Japanese documentary, and I have never experienced such a thing. While the beginning started out a bit slow, it quickly caught my attention. The main character had one goal- to get the truth out of the soldiers who shot and killed their own men. I found it quite humorous at one point, when he would walk into their homes, say sorry for intruding, then insist that he will beat them up if they do not reveal the truth. His goal was simple. He had already been arrested and sentenced to time in the past, so he was not scared of this notion. What's even more funny is the camera man did not even do anything when the fighting's were going on, he insisted on continuing to shoot. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat for many parts of it, and some parts actually made me feel sorry for those he was beating up ( I.e the old man who just had surgery.) He had a mission, and certainly carried it out. Another funny part was when he used impersonators to help lure the people into giving him answers, so in a sense he was a hypacrit himself. He ends up spending time in jail at the end, though his story shall live on. Great overall film.
Idi i smotri (1985)
come and see
Brilliant War-based movie, in the eyes of a child who was forced to grow up. There is a paradox there however, as the child was very eager to put a rifle on and go to war- little did he know that his worst nightmares were yet to come his way. His tasks throughout the film add to his growing character, and touched me in a way that most movies do not. I especially enjoyed the part where he was dragging through the deep sinking mud, as this was actually said by the director "go ahead and go across, i'll just film" ( not in those exact words.) He matures throughout the movie and it is apparent in the look of his eyes. Through the evil things the Nazis are doing to innocent people, and he was one of the lucky ones to survive. It also says a lot about his character when at the end they have captured some Nazis, and he decided to shoot the picture of Hitler instead of the actual prisoners. Very well thought out movie, and I would recommend it to those seeking an action filled film.
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
Phantom of Liberty
This film made me look at cinema in a whole new way. It was something I have never seen before, from the various scenes, to the scenes that made me say wow. Some of the ideas in this film were brilliant, such as when they all sit down at the dining room except they are all toilets instead of normal chairs. This is quite comical. The part where the naked women appears to be really old, then her naked body reveals a young beautiful women said a lot to me. Emotionally, it showed me that we can't all be biased towards older women, and that they too have genuine things about them. The sniper rifle scene was also very humorous to me and scary at the same time. It made me wonder what if something like this actually happened, then the court room scene really made me laugh. It is a great film, interesting at that.

In the Mood for Love- A great film
In the Mood for Love touched me in a way that most movies do not. I was able to essentially relate to some of the characters in the movie, as I have experienced such things in my own life. The use of vibrant music, to illuminate the dark romance between the couple that knew what was going on, but did not make it apparent until later in the film. The continuous growth of the characters, being not only heart-broken, but also love struck ads to the romance. The choice of multiple colored dresses that were worn allowed the viewer to better determine which day certain things were occurring on. This was helpful because at times it became rather difficult to follow what was going on, and on what day it was occurring. Overall I really enjoyed the film, and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in a genuine love story.
