Ghosts (2021)
The better Ghosts
*Spoilers for UK Version*
Maybe it's just because I watched the US Ghosts first, but it is the superior Ghosts, imo. Infinitely funnier, more thoughtful, more clever, and more attractive than the UK version. UK had 3 attractive characters - Alison, Kitty, and the Captain, and probably Mary, under all the soot. Everyone on the US version is gorgeous (well, except the basement 'zombies'). And ok, maybe that's a little shallow and unrealistic to life, but combined with the more bright and colourful sets, the US version is all around just more pleasing to look at.
This version makes progress. The US couple work hard on their house and open their B&B, UK couple whines and complains and never opens up the whole house. The UK husband had a good job at one point that could've helped them finance repairs, but they just forget about it? This version isn't messy like that. They don't forget important details.
The ghosts here also make progress, they learn and grow and change. Better themselves. UK ghosts don't really do that. They make a change in one ep but go back to being awful the next.
I like that they experience ghosts outside of the mansion, talk about how bad the ghost situation in cities is for her (I would like to see that at some point), and that they went and found Sam's mother. I like that Sam is kind to outside ghosts, unlike Alison who just ignores them. I like to think that Sam and Jay would never abandon the ghosts like Alison and Mike did at the end of their run.
I love the difference in the UK/US ghosts themselves, their periods of history. The range, from cave man to mid-90's finance bro (to middle aged 2020's housewife with Carol!), is just so... *cool* to see, especially if you love history. I think the US writers were absolutely inspired with the creation of Thorfin, I don't know if it's still widely known how far the Vikings got in their exploration of the Americas and it was just beyond satisfying to see his character on the mainland US. Sass is another one, it would've been a crime to not have a Native American ghost and I love his character. After watching the UK version, I'm really touched by the addition of the British army guy, just the cherry on top of the historic ghost cake, and a nice nod to the og.
I think one of my favourite things about this show is the underlying kindness and positivity. Especially in Samantha and Jay. Their relationship is refreshingly free of stress and emotional drama which provides a wonderful role model for the ghosts, as well as viewers. It's a sweet, thoughtful, hilarious show, and I really appreciate it!
Ghosts (2019)
Cute show, bad ending.
I really enjoyed this show, but the ending felt like a betrayal. I absolutely hated the ending, although I still cried a little. They went through all the drama of convincing her not to sell the house and her saying they're family - only to sell and abandon them anyway. And where is she gonna go? A new place with new ghosts she has to get used to? Or is she just going to savagely ignore all ghosts from now on? I thought it was a bit of a cruel and heartless ending. Hated it.
I also didn't like that she rarely interacted with or saw ghosts outside of the house. She said her parents both died but they never even think to go look for their ghosts?
I guess I made the mistake of watching the American version first, it's much more thought out and clever, plus it's just all around shinier sparkly butterflies and rainbows. More positive, I guess. Also much funnier. The husband is more involved, the wife cares more about the ghosts, and the ghosts actually learn and grow, and care about the humans. There are more diverse characters. Not to mention the ghosts outside the property and the trauma they can cause her - she says once that she can't even go into cities anymore as it's so bad, but the UK version never builds that up like that, you don't know what she experiences outside the house.
I love the variety of ghosts from history in both shows, the best part of the series', I think. I really like how they didn't copy the ghost's stories from one show to the other (except Pete/Pat, who could still just be a crazy coincidence lol), makes it feel like they could all be in the same world. Like they could meet up.
One thing I do much prefer about the Brit version is the lack of religion. The UK one doesn't presume the heaven/hell afterlife, Robin has a theory that the souls go to the stars and no one else really forces their beliefs on you. The US version seems to be leaning more on christian afterlife myths, too heavily for my tastes.
Egypt's Unexplained Files (2019)
Narrator is deranged.
In the first episode the narrator keeps saying "Arkenarten" instead of Akhenaten and it makes me want to find him in real life and punch him right on the nose. Hideously annoying. Also, the re-enactments are so corny. Nefertiti is wearing a dress with a zipper lol. It would've been more informative to have quality graphics recreating sites and cities, instead of actors in awful costumes marching next to gravel piles pretending to be the Egyptian desert.
Otherwise a lot of interesting info is actually shared, although they often don't really distinguish between known fact and supposition. More time should be spent on a subject, though.
Seungriho (2021)
So Cool
This is the best science fiction movie, or show, I've seen in years. The pacing reminded me of the 5th Element, where it was just a non stop, colourful, wild ride. It played out just like any of the fun, funny sci-fi adventure series I love to read. The ship and space station were like seeing things you've read come to life, it was awesome. I loved it. I'd really love to see a whole series.
Captain Jang was my favourite character, she was really cool. I wanna be just like her some day. The diversity and different languages were a fantastic part of the story too.
This is the kind of thing I've been dying to see for so long. Bravo!
Avenue 5 (2020)
Amazing
I haven't laughed so hard in a while. The first episode was shockingly, subtly, hilarious. I loved it. I can't wait for more.
