Fi (2017)
Good, deep characters with intriguing story
What is good about Fi is that it is mostly dependent heavily on character depth as it was expected from a book adaptation. Main 5 characters are all well balanced. As episodes progress, deep layers of characters revealed to viewers and viewer stance in favor or against any character may subject to change. By showing gray areas of characters; viewers may empathize with every main character some point even if they had judgements prior about them. It is really hard to determine who is protagonist and antagonist in this story.
Even though characters can be praised with their development, it has to be confessed that they are not original at all. Maybe the most important character, Duru which main plot line revolves around, is just an adaptation of Nina Sayes (portrayed by Natalie Portman) in Black Swan. A young dancer who is pure and innocent at first glance but has extreme passions. Others are not different too; Can Manay a cliché anti-hero, egoist and machiavellist on surface, but whose hurtful past and prior traumas compensate all. Lastly Deniz, first portrayed like a selfless fairy- tale musician turns out to be a prodigal, selfish and self-centered guy who values only his likenesses.
Besides main characters, side stories also enrich plot and make Fi. But they are also lack the originality as their main counterparts. Just like the main characters they all live at extremes. They are merely a representatives of major beliefs, ideologies and movements. Sadik Murat Kolhan; a rich "almighty" media boss, Özge; a LGBT activist who fights for freedom etc.
Overall, an experienced viewer can guess almost everything that will happen as story progresses. This aspect lowers the overall quality of series and declines viewer enthusiasm. But Fi saves the show by great acting, perfect music, a good story and well balanced characters.
Moonlight (2016)
Bad Storytelling When There's Actually No Story
I also took the hype train and started watching Moonlight with serious enthusiasm and expectation, as supposed to be I guess because of awards, ratings etc. Unfortunately I cannot write any good comments. Simply put; this is a bad movie. Movie is not good for any aspects, not good for having a solid story, not good for performances, not good for picture, directing, music and so on. It is actually surprising that movie is only mediocre for everything. I mean, it could be good for even a few things. Thus, nobody deserve any prizes for this 2 hour waste of media.
Character depth is a joke. It couldn't been more shallow and under told. It is almost like writer or director thought: "well, you all watched numerous other movies, or heard stories about poor African-American society, drug addiction, bad motherhood, bullying etc. we don't need to repeat them again, but we also don't have anything more than that except this time there's a gay boy, so just focus on that and don't sweat us, just feel sorry and cry." They have literally lounged about telling a solid story and mocked viewers like "meh, you fill the gaps".
This movie tries to be Boyhood, but got nowhere close to it. It tries to arouse some feelings of sensitivity or social responsibility but became only superficial and narrow-minded.
Cutting it short; Moonlight is just an overrated, over hyped, sponsored and politically backed up movie that nobody will remember within 3 months, yet to be an epic story.
Behzat Ç.: Bir Ankara Polisiyesi (2010)
A Psychological Politic TV Series
What makes Behzat Ç Bir Ankara Polisiyesi such a great series not only its' story, but also its' characters and their depth. None of the characters are shallow, they all have their own past and they are all played by great actors and actresses. Erdal Beşikçioğlu as Behzat Ç, and Canan Ergüder as Savcı Esra are the most notable of these examples. Origins of characters shown from time to time by flashbacks usually, especially if they are related with the topic of the episode. Almost every episode starts with a homicide, and because our main characters works as homicidal investigations; they try to find the murderer. But also there is a greater plot per season. Behzat Ç even has a nemesis whose past and his motives for hostility against Behzat Ç has not been revealed completely. Political side of the series is also highly controversial; some episodes attracted attention from officials, representatives and even from ministers because they contain serious criticism against the current administration.
