The Empire Files: Gaza Fights for Freedom (2019)
Painfully beautiful
A doc that should have won multiple awards and been shown on Netflix and everywhere else - obviously shunned by the mainstream based on its subject matter and effectiveness - an absolute tour de force, powerful and true, an incredibly painful must watch that will viscerally anger anyone with a sense of morality and social justice. Abby Martin has been a champion of the Palestinian cause - and all people on the wrong side of empire, the powerful elite and establishment - throughout her journalistic career. But Gaza Fights for Freedom is more than just straight reporting journalism - it is a tragic, artistic and visually stunning work - simultaneously telling both the macro and the personal story of the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice - with power heart and soul.
Z/Rex: The Jurassic Dead (2017)
If you like Mary Jane like I like Mary Jane you're going to LOVE surfing this movie's wave all the way to Monster Island!
If you live in a state where marijuana is legal (and you're partaking), then you're going to love this movie. If you're a heavy drinker (and a happy drunk), you'll probably like it too.
If you're into tripping or just had your wisdom teeth pulled, if you're an eternal optimist, a North Korean physicist or a Gregorian Monk, you may also find it to be a rough in the diamond.
If your kid is an Honor Student, if you're into Settlers of Catan, Twister, MAGA, Bernie Sanders, Duke Nukem, country music, anime, Lambada, fake news, chem trails, Hummers, gun rights, hard salami, survivalism, canned beans, Beano, gluten-free meth, lactose-free beer pong, the welfare state or the vegan lifestyle ... any of those, a must see!
The only kind of people who wouldn't like this movie are 1) Reiki healers, 2) Black Mirror snobs and 3) communists (but not necessarily in that order).
Acting is sincere, charming and self-aware ... and ... THE DINO F/X ARE PRACTICAL instead of digital ... we talking full-on Toho style hallelujah Gojira-lovers rejoice!
Concept, direction, editing, sound and soundtrack all hit the bullseye ... despite the cockamamie script, which must've been written by a brain-fried dope-dabber in a room full of lava lamps and clouds of burning hemp incense. Regardless, HIGHLY ENTERTAINING with countless intended and unintended LOLs. Party time!
The Creep Behind the Camera (2014)
If you liked Ed Wood and/or classic sci-fi, TCBTC is for you!
Stylistically dynamic. Unique narrative combining true doc (1/3) and re-enactment (2/3). A very compelling storyline. Solid acting, sometimes breakaway good. Fantastic set design and costuming. Self- aware and darkly comedic. Better effects than the original Creeping Terror, which is ironic. A brave overall effort that entertains throughout. All the while, the theme shines through so wonderfully. And visually, the DP and Director create a seamless creation. Intriguing and forward moving, it is rare to see a movie that does all this. For those who love classic sci-fi, this will be a wonderful experience. For those who don't, this is still a fun movie. You will walk out with a smile, a smirk and head-shaking disbelief all at the same time.
