Witnesses (2021)
Inspiring and historical movie
The movie was very well done, with great acting, videography, and music. And it was historically accurate. I also appreciated how it adeptly handled sometimes difficult periods in the history of the witnesses.
Although I appreciated the flashback approach, I can see how that would be a bit confusing for those who are not familiar with the history. So it may be helpful for someone to briefly familiarize themselves with the basic story of the three witnesses before watching the movie.
But all in all, the movie was very inspiring.
Tall Girl (2019)
Great movie about true love
Although at first blush the movie seems to be about standing up for yourself (pun intended), I think the fundamental premise of the movie is about true love: truly loving yourself for who you are, what it means to truly love family members, what true love is like between friends and romantic partners, and what true love for a potential romantic partner is not. I picked up on things the second and third time around that I missed the first time.
Max (2015)
Great Movie about Great Values
This movie is now one of my all-time favorites. From the values to the music and everything in between, this movie is top notch.
The values of honesty, trust, integrity, courage, loyalty, and perseverance are front and center. I loved seeing Justin go from not caring about Max to being very loving towards him. Max really brings the family together.
I thought the acting and story were great and realistic. The music was very moving. At the end I felt like saluting all who died serving people they didn't even know. Like all movies, there were some parts that were less than excellent, but that doesn't detract from the overall amazing movie.
The Giver (2014)
Overall Good Quality Movie
Overall, The Giver was a good, quality movie. It conveyed an important message: we need the bad in order to appreciate the good. I definitely plan on buying it when it comes out on DVD.
First, what I thought wasn't great about the movie: I thought the first little bit of the movie was rushed, as well as another segment later on. I also don't feel that time was conveyed well—almost a year passes from the beginning of the movie to the end, but the movie portrays it as just a few days. As a result of the time warp, we don't properly understand how love develops between the characters. We also don't see enough of Fiona's and Asher's development—they play key parts towards the end, but their actions seem out of the blue.
Now, the good of the movie: Above all, this movie conveys what I think is a very important message about needing pain with joy. I also appreciated that they touched on the differences between simply "a family unit" and having a real family. The emphasis on love as overarching was also good and appropriate. I appreciated that the movie doesn't show details of the painful memories but still is able to convey a little of the sorrow from them.
Again, I think this is a great movie overall. And I left the theater wondering, "Will we remember? Will we remember that love is worth the price of sorrow?" I certainly hope we never forget.
Merlin (2008)
A good, clean, family-oriented show
Merlin is a wonderful, family-oriented show that provides plenty of opportunities to be entertained and to think about many moral dilemmas. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good, clean show that is still worthwhile.
I am confused when critics claim that Merlin doesn't conform to the "traditional" Arthurian legend. My question is which legend they are referencing. There are so many variations that there isn't a "pure Arthurian legend." (For example, Lancelot didn't even exist in "the legend" until three centuries after its advent.) This show, instead of trying to portray many of the normal aspects of the Arthurian tradition, provides family-friendly entertainment and teaching opportunities.
I really enjoy the moral dilemmas faced by various characters throughout the show. Choosing who should live and who should die, whether it is right to disobey an evil law, and how social standings affect relationships are some examples of the great dilemmas that can be used as teaching tools for parents.
The acting is fairly good. As in most shows, it is usually quite wonderful with the occasional wooden, unrealistic motions. I think Colin Morgan especially does a good job building emotional support for his character. As far as production, I love the clothing and original-looking locations. The CGI is only okay, but that's to be expected with a low budget show.
I particularly love how there is very little profanity, violence, and immorality. Although you naturally have violence in an epoch of swords and spears, this show does a good job minimizing its appearance on screen.
All in all, this is an amazing show, and its type is sorely needed in today's world of dark, dirty, and demeaning prime-time TV series. Merlin is a fantastic show for a teenager or a grandparent and everyone in between.
