One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery (2024)
Not the Same Without Cameron Mathison
This has been one of my favorite Hallmark franchises because of the great chemistry between Alison Sweeney and Cameron Mathison. It just doesn't feel the same without him since he made the decision to defect to Great American Family. It seems like they've brought Victor Webster in as a possible new love interest for Hannah, but his character comes across as too stuffy and inflexible, and there's just no chemistry to give any potential romantic vibes. The story was interesting and it was nice to see Norman back as Hannah's sidekick, but the loss of Mike's character leaves a huge hole that I'm not sure can be filled.
The Abigail Mysteries (2023)
More Preaching Than Mystery
This was not a great attempt to compete with Hallmark's mystery movies. The plot centered more around the female main character's crisis of faith than solving the suspicious death of her next door neighbor. I expect some religious overtones to the movies on this channel, but not at the expense of the main plot. The writers used bible verses as clues left behind by the victim, as if she sensed that she was going to be murdered, but they weren't really helpful in moving the plot forward. It wasn't until the last 15 minutes of the movie that enough other clues were identified to bring the story to a coherent conclusion. The acting by the whole cast was just mediocre, making this movie rather forgettable in every way.
Pivoting (2022)
Not Much Here To Make You Laugh
I really wanted to like this new show because I usually enjoy the work of Maggie Q and Ginnifer Goodwin, but I'm giving up after 5 cringe-worthy episodes. I can't relate to any of the three main characters and their various existential crises after the death of their close friend. The friendship between these women seems to be based more on long standing habit than any real feelings. Unless the writing improves soon to allow these characters more depth, I anticipate that this show won't be renewed for a second season.
The Good Cop (2018)
Why Did Netflix Cancel This Show?
I just finished watching season 1 of this highly entertaining series only to find out that Netflix has cancelled it. Who knew superb singer Josh Groban could be funny too? The chemistry among the ensemble cast members is great and Tony Danza shines as a disgraced cop who continues to struggle between doing the easy thing and the right thing, especially when it comes to tracking down the person who murdered his wife. The stories are unique and the dialogue witty. I wish that there were going to be more seasons, but I fear that this series appealed to a demographic that is not Netflix's target audience.
