Extreme Ops (2002)
So bad, it makes you wish the plot was real
If you have tooth cavities and an upcoming dentist appointment and you are really, really afraid, don't worry. There are worse things in life. Here's an example: THIS movie.
After about 70 minutes of watching, I was ready to pick up a gun and hunt down the actors of this movie, and shoot up the film studio that produced this junk.
To save my sanity I stopped watching. Another 10 minutes and I would have done it.
From the extremely obnoxious, arrogant, unlikable, bland characters, to the completely incompetent and stupid."terrorists", to badly executed "slowmo stunts". I don't know what is the worst.
This film tortures you with 60 minutes of unbearable gossip, while you are waiting, hoping, PRAYING for the terrorists to finally show up to put an end to it.
And when they finally show up, they screw up. Highly trained ex-soldiers get outsmarted by a bunch of tourists. That's the plot summary.
Final rating: 0/10.
STAY AWAY FOR YOUR OWN SAKE.
Life (2017)
Good modern realistic Space horror that managed to scare me
So Alien is realistic and Life isn't? I swear these haters have no brains. Apparently travelling to an Earth like planet that is light-years away (impossible), finding an Alien Space Ship full of eggs containing a hostile organism that spills acid for blood (impossible, absurd, laughable).... is more realistic than "Life".
"Life" takes place on the ISS - a space station that actually exists in real life. They travel to Mars, recover a sample, and return to Earth orbit, which is 100% possible and 100% plausible. In fact, again that already happened in real life with all those Rovers we sent to Mars. We just didn't send humans yet. We have recovered rocks from the Moon and brought them back right here to Earth. 100% legit. This movie could pass as a SCIENCE movie, without the "fiction".
I really cringed hard at these reviews. Anyone who even compares this film to Alien to begin with (to badmouth "Life" which means I'm excluded) has lost any credibility and should instead watch some (modern) Disney movies because that is more tied to their level of intellect.
Now, to this movie itself. "Life" is one of the few modern horror films that actually got my adrenaline pumping at least once. Not by cheap jump scares. No, by actual horror, made with good acting, scripting, CGI. Well done.
I enjoyed this film from beginning to finish and hope there will be a sequel. Though there is a plot twist at the end that makes a sequel unlikely (in my opinion). They will definitely need good writers for a sequel or it will flop.
The only thing off with this movie is how quickly the creature learns almost to the point of being omniscient. It is self-aware, it knows it is in space, it knows it is orbiting a habitable planet. It also knows how to control and fly an escape pod. Also I agree with what someone mentioned in another review about the creature having "too much" screen time.
Voces (2020)
Decent, but slow
Decent "haunted house horror" with a very slow start, but towards the end it really picks up.
Like many people here I was a little bored at the beginning, and the language barrier doesn't help.
As for me, I'm not used to watch films with subtitles, so this took some time getting used to. The film provided that time - quite smart actually.
Starting at around 2/3 into the movie, it shifts into another gear and your patience will be rewarded, if you're still watching.
Amber's Descent (2020)
Good ideas, gone to waste
I made it through the 92 minutes. No idea how. Guess I was hoping... for something. This movie is a mess.
"Descent" is a fitting title. I'm not sure if this is intended to be a horror movie or a documentary about dementia.
You're Not Alone (2020)
It's not a horror movie, but a pretty horrible watch nevertheless.
A failed Boogeyman clone. That's what this movie WISHES it was.
I saw its low IMDB score before watching, but remained neutral, and thought I'd give it a try. I was not expecting a masterpiece, but was STILL disappointed.
For 3/4 of the time nothing happens, while the general tone and acting makes you feel depressed and bored, not scared.
(TRIGGER WARNING for people struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts!)
You don't care about any characters, they are lifeless to begin with. Probably poor acting or directing.
When the action finally kicks in (after 70 boring minutes!) it's random and makes no sense.
Finally the movie closes on a poor attempt at a plot twist (which was random and made no sense, again).
Not worth your time.
