Yue lok ji wong (1999)
It's time for a bar-off
Nick Cheung and Francis Ng must be good friends with them as the main pair in so many films. They have good chemistry in this one as well, even if they are facing off against each other. Nick plays a somewhat dumb, but lucky server in a bar/entertainment place (drinks are served, women entertain men by talking and being interested in them). Eventually his luck helps him work his way up to the top, owning a 'bar' of this same sort for himself. There is a lot of bar atmosphere to the movie. Even the final 'fight' scene is a face off against these two mixing powerful drinks for the other. The one who survives is 'The Lord of Amusement'. I found it entertaining, and funny throughout. Seeing Nick act completely clueless towards the beginning is also fun to watch.
Chiu kap hok hau ba wong (1993)
Comedy Gold!
In the future, year 2043, Bison is convicted and comes up with a plan to free himself. He sends his henchmen, Ken, Honda and Sagat, back in time to 1993 to find and destroy the judge who sentenced him when he was still vulnerable. It turns out that at this time he was still in high school. Cops from the future are also sent back in time to find him first and protect him. Throughout most of the story they are looking for him in the past, and trying to blend in with society of the time. This has to be one of the funniest movies i've seen in a very long time. If you are not in the mood for silly comedy, wait until you are to watch this. Street Fighter fans especially will have fun watching how silly the characters in this movie are. It's very similar to anime in it's humor stylings, making for a completely unrealistic, but comedic world. I would completely recommend this as a party movie among friends when you want a lot of laughs.

One of the worst HK movies i remember...
For a thriller movie, this goes incredibly too slow. It does not build up suspense to a high point, nor does it draw attention towards a central story. The story is very simple. The main group is goes to the website where it is said they can communicate with the dead. While doing so, the rest of the group (too many to remember their names) plans out a scheme to scare them into thinking they are actually communicating. It then turns serious as they are offed one by one. At first they think it's only a joke, but then more strange things start to happen. One highlight of the movie is a Big 2 (card game) scene where one guy gets a supreme hand but then all the other players disappear (they were ghosts). This barely kept my attention, and to be honest I had trouble sitting through the second half of this movie. 3/10.
Lung joi bin yuen (1999)
Better than Y&D at least
After watching the entire Y&D, watching this was a welcomed change. It has much more of a defined storyline, and with more violence with a reason. It starts with an undercover cop being sent to nail Fai-lone, the lead boss of the Hung Hing triad. He learns that Fai-lone is no longer a triad boss, but he is straight. As there is still corruption in the group, the undercover cop and Fai-lone have the same target in mind and must eliminate the betrayer. Only knowing that this film had Andy Lau in it was enough to draw me to watch. It turned out to be well worth it. The acting by him and number of the girls, including his wife in the girls, is great. Many of the guys play 'strong' emotionless characters with some room for development. The story is at least original, although most of it dragged on too slow. There isn't much action, but the dialog and situations are enough to sty interested most of the time. 7/10.

Some say it's great
Sun Liying, played by Li Gong, plays a single mother dealing with supporting her young son in a very lifelike and hopeless environment. Her deaf son, Zheng Da, is dealing with this and trying to learn enough to get into school. Liying must make enough to support her young son, and pay for his new hearing aid. These are not cheap, costing over $5000, with her making only $5, and her divorced husband not helping. This film did very well at the Berlin film festival. This is really a slice of life film, going through the basic actions of one struggling mom. This is not at all the type of film I personally like. I can understand how it is appreciated by critics, but it was a little too slow for my tastes. I have never been a fan of the extreme basic, or the struggles that are present in daily life, such as getting money from ones' ex-husband. It's all too bland for my taste. That's the main theme of the story though, that there is hope, even without excitement, love money. But for me, it's 2/10.
