Flaming Feather (1952)
good picture
This a good picture for what it is. It seems to start out as a formula western with an age old plot, white man running with Indians doing bad things, lone hero sets out to stop him, etc. However the script is pretty good, there is some suspense, though we sort of know from the get-go who the bad guy is,the moment he shows on the screen. I love Sterling Hayden...for a guy who really didn't like being an actor, he does all right. Barbara Rush is beautiful and appealing. Forrest Tucker just shows up, and Victory Jory steals the picture with his oily charm.Edgar Buchannian is wasted in a role he really isn't suited for.
However, all in all, a pretty good picture. I enjoyed it.
Middonaito îguru (2007)
not that bad...may contain spoilers
I have to disagree with the previous reviews. I saw this picture last night and from where I sit, it's NOT an action picture but a drama. Just because it has guns in it, dosn't make it an action picture. In reading the previous reviews they keep referring to solving the problem in 48 hours and there being no urgency to do so.....Where this 48 hour time line came from, I don't know. It's never mentioned in the picture as far as I can see. We as the audience do not know that there is a nuclear bomb involved until 3/4 of the way through the story. (though you may guess that there is)....And in any case, there is no way the hero's of the story could have known of the 48 hour dead line.
Those who accuse this picture of being slow, may be correct, but as a drama, it takes the time to lay out the characters and their motivations. There is no "sexual tension" between the hero and his sister-in-law. She's P.O'd at him because her sister died while he was off doing his job rather then taking care of the sister, his wife. Then we find out that the wife never told him he was sick. Those who denigrate this picture don't seem to have much of a handle on real life. I found this picture to be extremely well done, beautifully photographed, the acting was OK and the ending completely understandable. It's not a bad picture, just different...and not an action film, though it has some action in it. This my first exposure to a Japanese film that wasn't a Kung-fu/Martial arts picture, horror/Monster film or Akira Kurosawa epic. I liked it overall.
The Keeper (2009)
not bad
I just saw the Keeper and I agree with may of the reviews here that this is one of Steve's better pictures of the last few years. Having said that, I must also observe that those who disparage the acting of Seagal and his co-stars would not know good acting if it walked up and bit them.......Granted he is not a great actor, maybe not even a good one, but he is a decent actor capable of displaying and selling humor when it is called for. THAT is a sign of an actor who knows what he is doing.....as the old actor said on his death bed "Dying is easy, it's comedy that's hard."....and truer words were never spoken. All of those in this picture who delivered lines did so on an acceptable level...Academy Award performances they are not, but if you think this is bad acting....you have not been around much.
