Carter's Army (1970)
A political statement movie
This movie has Richard Pryor, Rosey Grier and others. It's a curious WW2 movie, and serves as a statement about racism. It is worth watching to understand the fact that Movies reflect how we feel about the issues when they are produced and not about the period of time they portray. Meaning this is a 70's movie not a 40's movie (WW2). Still, there is some good action scenes of 7 seven black men led by a white captain trying to capture a Dam. The story centers on the Captain learning that these men are soldiers and not just a service company. There is a scene that could be from a Civil War movie and not a WW2 movie that reflects what the movie is all about. The Black Lt. gives a German women a innocent peck on the cheek, and the white Capt becomes upset. I enjoyed the movie from a curiosity stand point since the stars and the Genre were interesting to me.
5 per l'inferno (1969)
This is so bad it should be on MST3K...
I have watched a lot of war movies in my time, so I feel that I can comment on any war film with authority. But, this film is so bad a chimp could easily see this movie is so terrible it is funny. The music at times appears to be happy-campy stuff from the 70's or from a bad porn movie. At times the music does not fit. The premise of the movie is OK, yet it is unbelievable that these Italians are American GIs. Lets see the Tap dancing soldier that uses a trampoline to get over a fence, oh boy would Joel, and Crow have fun with that one. There is a dark haired Italian beauty that is supposed to be an German secretary that works for the underground. I am surprised they did not include a Hogan's Hero's character for good measure. There is the usual good German general and the bad SS guy that disagree on how to treat underground prisoners. The movie was on one of those 16 movies for 10 bucks DVD in a bin at the drug store. The video quality looked like a bad VCR dub.
Guadalcanal Diary (1943)
Great movie
I grew up watching World War 2 movies with my Father (WW 2 US Army Combat engineer), so I can say that I know a lot about the genre. This movie is one of the better ones. I rate it a 7 on a 10 point scale. Some people think that the "gee-wheez" dialog is not real of what the soldiers would say. They are right, however we must keep in mind that this movie was made in the 40's for people living in the 1940's and not the 2000's. In the 1940's swearing and tough real talk was just as common as it is today, but there was no need for them fill a movie up with such talk. The movies were made to stand on it's story merit and not be just a swear fest based "roller coaster ride" we have today. Taken in context, the movie hits home a very common point for movie made during the war. The point is that our boys who are like all of us in America (1940's view on the world) have it rough, they need our support, but they will win. Note movies made after the war have a different viewpoint.
