Uncut Gems (2019)
Noisy, fast paced and ridiculous
The story never really made any sense. Adam Sandler was quite good and Julia Fox was... well, foxy. And then in the end was this deus ex machina twist. But still, the movie was better than average.
Us (2019)
Mediocre at best
Disappointed with this picture. Even the twist towards the end wasn't very well executed.
About Time (2013)
Wish I could travel back in time and watch this movie again for the first time
I love horror movies. I like fun movies. But I am not really into romantic movies. Except this one.
I think it is well paced and has a lot of heart and warmth, and I swore profoundly when I read the reviews in the Danish media. As I see it, it is not just another "boy meets girl" love story. It is first and foremost a story about appreciating life - even the everyday routine. But also a film about the bond between a young man and his father.
Suffice it to say this: The plot is great and the story is well paced; The casting and acting is very good by all the main characters; Bill Nighy is really a joy to watch; The music/sound track is "spitzenklasse" throughout; I would not have to think twice if Rachel McAdams were to ask me to have a third child(sic!); The father/son farewell scene brought me the rare sensation of tears in my eyes (thank you for that)
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
The eternal Carell
I'll rate this 5/10 and make no mistake: I am being very generous here! There is no point in this movie. It beats me why Steve Carell is content to always play this kind of character, this average Joe at his worst. Carell's got talent he just has to show it... and movies like "Seeking a Friend..." will bring him nowhere!
Do not waste your time on this - go watch a sunset instead. Watching this flick will make you think: "Oh, another movie where Steve Carell plays Steve Carell" or where you'll be annoyed by Keira Knightley playing a girl being extremely British rather than somewhat intriguing.
I was bored with this film but stayed true till the end. Do not repeat my mistake.
Sound of My Voice (2011)
What Marlings May Come...
I could easily have spent longer time in Brit Marling's company. She is – needless to say – very beautiful and has this intriguing personality that makes you want to know more about her. Also, the film has this nice slow pace that makes you (that is: me) feel that you are actually becoming a part of the cult. And as someone in here has already pointed out: the ending could easily be the point where the movie really takes off. Instead the ending leaves you with a lot of questions – which of course is not always a bad thing – and to my mind the film would have been greater if we had gotten some more of the story to work with in that question-asking phase. Still it's a good film with good acting by Marling as well as Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius.
Watching the movie I came to think of Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise and What Dreams May Come starring Robin Williams. I think Sound of My Voice has the same dreamy feeling to it as those two excellent movies.
Horrible Bosses (2011)
Well, I almost laughed once or twice
Saw Horrible Bosses yesterday. Can't say I'm impressed. Seems like the comedy-bit has been composed of two parts: the first part being the three bosses' treatment of our unhappy heroes (the bosses themselves of course are hollow caricatures supposed to make us laugh). The other bit of the "comedy" is the constant whining, bitching and complaining among the lead actors. They slap each other around throughout the entire movie and is generally acting as you would expect your friendly neighborhood schlemiels to act.
If you call this a comedy you might as well call it a crime story. There is as much crime in the movie as there is comedy! Only Jennifer Aniston and Jamie Foxx stood out in the film. Aniston for not looking like she always does and Foxx because he was the only truly fun character.
Meek's Cutoff (2010)
Not really worth the time
Very few movies are worth only 1 out of ten. In this case it is because of my disappointment when discovering I had wasted almost two hours on a film that is rated 7 (at the time of writing this) while there is nothing to merit that high score.
I think the review by BoomerMovieFan1 is very accurate so read it and you will understand all my reasons for not liking this movie (and disagree if you have to)...
To cut it short: 1) No one speaks for the first 15 min's 2) Nothing really happens until almost 40 min's into the film when a new character is introduced (uh-oh, drama!). 3) A wagon crashes about an hour into the film 4) And then the movie ends without any climax - it simply just ends just when you think you get the answers that kept you watching it to the end.
And the lone star is for that achievement: to make the viewer stay to the end, thinking: "there surely must be more to it than this?!"
X: First Class (2011)
Pretty good story, good action, and gorgeous actresses
Just saw this flick and I have to agree with those people postulating that it is one of the best X-men movies - if not THE best.
It has everything your heart desires: a pretty good story, good action, and gorgeous actresses (January Jones for starters!). There is nothing in the movie you haven't seen before and here I am referring entirely to the action and plot. But I very much liked the fact that the story reaches its climax in the Cuban missile crisis showdown; the historical reference adds an extra dimension to the film.
As a total fan boy of the comic it made my heart jump when Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost entered the picture. It felt like coming home.
I also have to mention James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. But enough of that for now - watch the movie and keep an eye on the female cast.
Insidious (2010)
A classic is born
Just saw the film tonight and it was one the best scares I have ever seen! In fact it is the best movie I have seen in a very long time.
It had all the effects you would expect from a ghost story and then adds some. Boy did that movie make me jump! The astral projection thing worked fine and what I liked most was the way the story unfolded which is why I call it the best movie I have seen in a very long time. There is no hurry - things evolve naturally from good to weird to worse all the while you are comfortably knowing that you're in for a real treat.
The cast and the acting was spot on. Rose Byrne is very convincing and sweet as the mother (Renai Lambert) who is the first to experience all those strange events.
To Wan's credit I also liked the fact that she didn't freak out or that she and her husband (Josh, played by Patrick Wilson) didn't break up because she was hysterical and he just wouldn't understand. I really felt that they were a real-life couple, not just brought together by a script and a caster but in it together all the way.
Let it speak for itself - if you like scary movies this is the one you shouldn't miss out on.
I'll give 11 stars - the last one is for the goose bumps that just won't go away!
London Boulevard (2010)
Great gangster movie
I did not know anything about this film until I saw it. I felt greatly entertained while watching it and was happy to find David Thewlis in the cast (haven't seen him since Naked). The movie takes this sort of violent trajectory and just spirals down into the inevitable finale. There is a sort of a romance going on between Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley but thankfully it does not overshadow the gangster theme of the story. Ray Winstone is great as the villain and there are other great performances as well (for instance by Thewlis). All the acting is not flawless but all in all it's a movie I would tell my friends to go see. Only negative thing I have to say is about the ending. I don't like it when the hero is killed in the end by a good-for-nothing kid!
One thing that brought me a lot of pleasure the plot aside was the fact that Farrell at one point cites the writer R. M. Rilke. I did not now that guy until I saw the film. Guys, you cannot but dig the quote "Everything terrible is something that needs our love".
