Skyline (2010)
Had potential, but...
It was severely let down by it's acting, writing, directing, cinematography and plot. The special effects were good, but that was really the only saving grace of what is a completely forgettable film.
The script was terrible. Absolutely terrible. Clichéd, predictable and undeveloped. The characters were shallow, the acting extremely poor. There were glimpses of good, but they were fleeting.
There is no plot, there is no storyline. There is no beginning-middle-end. It's just 90 minutes of blah.
The CGI, though, was excellent. No doubt the producers spent there entire budget on it, leaving nothing left for any other part of the film, such as paying someone to find all the holes in the plot. Rather than that, they chose to completely forgo having a plot to begin with.
Novecento (1976)
An absolute must see.
This masterpiece of cinematic brilliance is the reason films get made. Don't let the fact that it is 5 hours long daunt you - you won't feel the time. You will instead be completely absorbed in an epic story that, despite its rather simple premise of following the lives of two men, is really like watching a novel. I can't really describe the film any other way than that - it is a novel.
There are some scenes that are hard to watch, especially in this day and age of political correctness and "you can't do that on television" attitude, but set your 21st century mind aside. This film shows life in its rawest form. Brutal at times, hilarious at others, but altogether real.
This film defines the talents of so many household names. It has become like an old friend - like that book you read every year or two. By the end, you will find yourself utterly spent and it will stay with you forever.
Novecento is one of those films you absolutely, positively must see before you die.
The Maze (2010)
Don't waste your time.
I don't know what the worst part of this movie is. The acting, the story, or the dragging pace.
The ending, though not typical, is unsatisfying and it comes after what can only be described as 10 minutes of stupid. Though, that seemed to be the main theme of this film.
Five friends in a corn maze at night, one psycho and a bumbling country police force. All the elements of a b-grade slasher flick, but without the charm of one.
There is very little lead in, and, after an inexplicable opening sequence which is not explained at all, the action starts withing a few minutes. There is no character development whatsoever before the characters start getting picked off.
There is the typical lone-survivor-faces-killer-in-one-on-one-showdown, before escaping. That happens with 30 minutes to go. Then comes the "twist" which is less of a twist and more of an eye-roll.
Cue weird and unnecessary flashback reminding the audience of what they just saw - you know - in case your short term memory prevents you from remembering more than 10 minutes of your life at any one time.
It's not scary, it's not tense. Despite the opening scene, which is rather good, it is never explained and the rest of the movie is very poor by comparison.
Of all the movies I've seen this year, this ranks as the worst. Look for it soon in the ex-rental bargain bin of your local video store.
