For All Mankind (2019)
Not brilliant but nevertheless a great mix of sci-fi and drama
No this is not the next Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. But that is OK.
This series shows a realistic alternative timeline in which the Soviet Union is the first to land a man on the moon, after which an accelerated, fierce and enduring Space Race starts.
Intertwined with realistic action on and special effects of space, the moon and Mars, is a solid piece of drama, with especially great performances of Joel Kinnaman and Shantel VanSanten. Also great is to see how different presidents like Nixon, Reagan and Clinton interact within this Space Race, along with other famous characters which died where in our own world they live, and vice versa.
I think this show deserves a higher rating. 8,5/10.
Wanderlust (2012)
Genuine sarcasm, funnier than the rating suggests
I do not understand why the rating is so bad here on IMDB. Maybe it is because European humor (I am from The Netherlands) is different from American humor. For example I also loved Movie 43, which has a horrible rating here. This movie is full of sarcasm and funny characters, parodying the hippie commune lifestyle vs the mentally deadening capitalist lifestyle.
Lots of moments of laughing out loud, so I think this movie deserves better. 7/10.
Rear Window (1954)
Wonderful film
This film is beautiful, exciting and funny at the same time. Laughed loud quite some times. What a great introduction to Hitchcock's work.
House of Cards (1990)
Well-written, funny mini series about a ruthless politician
I watched this series after watching all seasons of the American House of Cards. The parallels with US season 1 are very clear, with the voice of Urquhart even resembling Kevin Spaceys voice.
The English version is more condensed, at times funnier and less raw than the US version. In rating however I find them almost equal, and they complement each other well.
Tribes of Europa (2021)
Entertaining series that gets better with every episode
Not perfect, but certainly not bad. What seems to be a shallow series at first gets better in time, when characters become deeper and the world more realistic and raw.
Overlord (2018)
Great combi of horror and war movie
I really liked this one. Great filming, good props and sets, quite well acting, a story without loopholes and some character development. Really sucked me in with the great atmosphere.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Original story, good acting but unfortunately quite some loose ends
This movie is quite good, even though I only rated it 6/10. The acting is good and the story is quite original. However there are a lot of loose ends in the story. Characters and events that are not explained, people die too sudden and an ending that does not satisfy.
However, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to each other horror lover.
Zusje (1995)
Keeps you on the edge of your seat
Brilliant psychological drama with lots of humor interwoven. Also a great throwback to Amsterdam in the 1990's.
Midsommar (2019)
Really enjoyed it.
Great cinematography, from the start watching it with an uneasy feeling which lasts during all of the film, which gets sicker and sicker.
Claustrofobia (2011)
Terrible script, bad acting, quite good cinematography
Carolien Spoor is quite a good actress (such as in Black Tulip), but the script is truly terrible and thus does not give her room for good acting. After 40 minutes we all know who the bad guy is, but even after 5 minutes the plot can be predicted, which is full of plotholes.
Final Destination (2000)
Great fun, and Ali Larter is hot!
Do not have too much expectations, and this movie gives you 90 minutes of fun, together with some satisfying death scenes and quite an original plot. Looking forward to the sequels.
The Walking Dead: The Calm Before (2019)
Surprisingly nerve-breaking
The second part of this season so far has not been that exciting, but things took an unexpected turn in this episode, in which a dark suspense is hanging in the air up until the dramatic climax of the episode. It made the rest of the season worthwile.
De zaak Menten (2016)
Great series with superb acting
This series greatly captures the spirit of the seventies in The Netherlands but also brings about the past of the Second World War in a great way. The actors are experienced ones, delivering emotions in a very good way. I never felt like looking at bad actors in this series and everything had a very realistic impression.
