Kimi (2022)
Cartoonish
This movie's plot can be written in just one paragraph, and I don't mean a summary, I mean the WHOLE plot. The story is dumbed down and extremely boring. On top of that, the characters are cartoonish, and slightly irritating. All this is not the result of incompetence though, as it is pretty obvious that the movie is made by extremely competent people in all areas including the actors. It is all done by choice, and part of a sector of USA filmmaking that is churning out irritatingly cartoonish movies and tv series. They must've decided there is a market for this sort of thing, and they're probably right, but it does annoy me when I pick one of these. I usually stop watching as soon as I detect my mistake but in this case the director is Steven Soderbergh and I was always expecting things to get better. They didn't...
Brave New World (2020)
Aims high, but fails
HBO's "Brave New World" is a weird beast. It is very different from anything else out there, its "feel" and pace totally unrelated to what modern audiences have become accustomed to, both in movies and in tv series. The actors deliver great performances and carry the directors' peculiar choices convincingly and with ease. The problem is that all this originality doesn't work. The series would greatly benefit from being edited to half its present length and the weird tempo is reminiscent of old iron curtain movies from the Eastern Bloc. As anyone who has watched those movies knows, they tended to be exasperating, plainly boring and unbearably pretentious. Unfortunately, "Brave New World" mimics all those characteristics and ads a confusing back narrative about how the utopian world came to be.
I concede that the directors aimed high and, had they achieved their aims, B.N.W. would be something very special. But unfortunately they didn't, and it isn't.
Lot Lizard (2016)
Raw reality
This is a true documentary, it shows reality without trying to sweeten it, explain it or extract any conclusion from it. It's probably too raw for most people's taste but I really liked it (actually I profoundly disliked it... uh, you understand what I mean, right?). It's not an easy documentary to watch, you need your chakras to be very aligned.
