Oblivion (2013)
Good idea, badly executed..
The problem with Joseph Kosinski is that he doesn't know how to keep his audience entertained when there is no action on the screen. You can notice what I'm talking about in Oblivion and also in his recent sequel movie, TRON: Legacy. Kosinski is missing that attention grabbing direction in his dialogue scenes. All that he provides during those scenes are the beautiful visuals on the screen but, even those are not enough. When the action sequences do come along, Kosinski does a great job visually and also an awesome job thinking them out. Even though there isn't much action in Oblivion, they are very visually stunning sequences, even in TRON: Legacy. Another thing that I disliked about this movie is the looong beginning that dragged on for too long. There were many scenes that I found were just extremely boring and dragged on. There were also many scenes that I think could have been made better (for example, when Jack goes down the hole to repair the destroyed drone.) Overall, this movie was filled with amazing visuals and a great, original story, I just feel like it could have been executed a lot better. But at the same time, I feel like other directors couldn't have brought on the emotional feelings that came with Kosinski's directing (for example, the hidden valley that Jack discovers.) I can't give this movie no more than a 7/10.
Evil Dead (2013)
Evil Deadly disappointing...
When I first saw the first trailers for this movie, I quickly went to go watch the original and I loved it! It was spooky, creepy and scary! Even the possessed looks of the humans freaked me out a bit after all of these years of its first debut. So I got myself pumped and ready for this remake and everything! I just saw it today and I have to say, I was deeply disappointed...I realize that the creators and director tried to fit it into our present time now, which worked Out perfectly. But, the thing that just didn't work out for me is that they just went a bit overboard with the gore and blood. I feel like they planned everything out perfectly in this movie just for the purpose of the gore and blood. The personality of the "demon" in this was pretty frightening but, at times I felt like things were just too cheesy with the "demon". Also, some of the lines that were said by the "demon" just made giggle. I have to say, this movie isn't "the most terrifying movie you'll ever experience." There were probably two or three scenes that made me jump just a little bit. It was just filled with disgusting, overwhelming gore and blood sequences. The only things that I really liked was the acting done by Jane Levy and what happened at the end when it started to "rain". I just couldn't sit through the movie anymore when it got halfway into it (I was with some friends so I couldn't really leave, so I had to bare through it). There were times when I thought that it should've ended and also times when I WISHED the movie ended because it was so ridiculous. Anywho, this just isn't my type of movie. I recommend it to those who like gore and blood.
I Am Number Four (2011)
Great action flick!
I was lucky and saw an advanced screening on this film and I was half disappointed and half impressed. First of all, I read the book and I just thought that they left out a lot of detail from the book, some big ones too. But, the visuals and action is what kept me on my seat. The story, I thought they did a decent job with, but if they sticked with parts of the story in the book, it would have been a better film. They could have made the movie longer and added some other details from the book. I mean, in the book, Henri and John can open the chest he hides together. They open it in the book, and Henri lays John down on the table and pulls out a rock like crystal from the chest and it appears as their planet, Lorien, and with that, Henri shows what happened on their planet the day it was invaded by the Mogadoriens, visually. They could have put that part in the movie, I thought it was a somewhat big part. But overall, a decent flick if you have nothing else to do or see. Check it out, I Am Number Four!
