Jersey Girl (2004)
Not your typical Kevin Smith movie...obviously
Sorry to disappoint you ladies and gentleman, this is not what you would normally expect from Kevin, in fact its probably the kind of movie he would have spoofed 15 years ago. Jay and Bob don't even make a cameo, the dialog is no where near as sophisticated as it was in oh say 'Clerks', but that doesn't mean you shouldn't like it.
For just a moment forget that whole "Bennifer" fiasco and look past the fact that your two favorite "Motherfuc*ers" are no where to be found and just see this movie for what it is...a nice, feel-good, semi chick flick that leaves you saying "Awww" in the end.
You know what its about and yes, the story line is simple and predictable, but in this day and age, isn't a movie like this a welcome change? Give it a chance, if not for the reasons I have just given, then do it just to see world famous "7 Dirty Words" George Carlin being a grandpa...oh yeah, you know you want to.
Peter Pan (1960)
One Great Movie!
This movie is one of the best versions of the Peter Pan story that I have ever seen I've been watching it for years and now at the age of 20 I still find myself singing the songs and tapping my toe to the beat.
It was done in the traditional theater way, with a woman playing Peter Pan, but Mary Martin did such a wonderful job you never think of her as a 'girl'. Tinkerbell is a light that whizzes across the stage, and the audience is drawn into the movie when asked to clap for the little fairy after drinking poison meant for Peter.
This is a wonderful movie and I recommend it for adults and children alike, its full of the wholesome kind of magic that you hardly see nowadays in film.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Good movie but...eh...
SPOILERS!!! GREAT ACTING!!! In fact the best I have seen in years but it was the story...Oh my God that story. It was so predictable!!! My husband and I knew what was going to happen within the first five minutes of the movie and we hadn't read or seen anything on it yet.
The biggest problem I had with this movie though was its trail of Titanic and Pearl Harbor sterotypes...the hero will face a number of antagonistic situations to keep him from his heroine, he WILL have sex with the heroine, and will die not long after, and then of course he WILL leave behind an unborn child....oh PUHleeze
Argh!!!!!!!
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Exceeded Expectations (spoilers)
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** Let me just start off by saying that I had never seen a QT movie before in my life and that in reality I went to the theater with my husband to see Scary Movie 3, but alas it was sold out and my husbands friend suggested KILL BILL.
I'm not a big fan of Uma Thurman so I wasn't happy about the idea and went into the theater with the attitude of a three year old who didn't want to take a nap. But as the movie started and well after Daryl Hannah's annoying Whistle Music I found myself actually caring about the character, which for all drama/film/theater students is the ultimate of a great story.
There's certainly a lot of passion to the film and that's I think what gives it depth. Hearing at the end about how her child was still a live totally threw me through a loop even though I know now that's probably the only right way to end the film...makes a great bridge to the sequel.
The acting was at more than its best. And Lucy Liu and Vivica A. Fox totally blew me away with their performances. The only draw back to the film was the way you felt after watching it. Like you didn't get enough of the story.
I'm impressed though. Way to go Uma and QT. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Fools Rush In (1997)
Lucy you got some 'splain to do
Had to use that....the best line in the whole movie. Quite possibly Matthew Perry's greatest movie. Its a great movie for dates, or even to watch at home with your family. Good and wholesome this is what good love stories are made of.
