Ahsoka: Part One: Master and Apprentice (2023)
FANTASTIC START
The opening scene to Dave's baby is the antithesis of the opening to a phantom menace. A movie that Dave filoni has highly regarded. It mirrors qui gon and obi wan's entrance. The old master with the young good looking padawan (obi wan and shin). This time it's not droids being destroyed. It's people. And the heroes as well. That is just pretty fantastic story telling in Star Wars
The rest of the episode was pretty great also. The scene where ahsoka is doing the puzzles took me back to fallen order and survivor.
The shots of her looking into the camera lens honestly made me tear up. As did when she took her good off.
I would continue writing more but currently rewatching it:
- love letter to rebels
- intrigued about the mishaps in sabines training
- can't wait for more!!
Heartstopper: Kiss (2022)
More and more mesmerising with each rewatch
Some pretty groundbreaking and beautiful gay fiction during this episode. Really wish I had this kind of content on my screen a few years back in high school, would really have helped me. We start to see an essential transformation in Nick during this episode bolstered by the visibility of queerness that is so essential to a young developing queer mind. The episode is so god damn visually appealing. From Charlie's friend's bedroom, to Tara on the dance floor with her girlfriend, to the lil animations when Charlie and Nick kiss.
The episode feels vibrant and feels like it's breathing. The acting is on point from everyone especially Joe and Kit. Their eyes and facial expression scream out where their characters are at. Charlie is looking for love with some self acceptance in his soul and Nick wants to feel his embrace but his facial expression convey that all too familiar internalised homophobia. Two great character moments that will forever be remembered.
Great messages for the young queer mind.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: A Quality of Mercy (2022)
Wow.
What a fantastic end to season one of Star Trek strange new worlds. Discovery season 2 showed us that Captain Pike wilfully accepted his TOS fate knowing full well in advance that it would happen to him. A great sacrifice for the federation solidifying him as a great captain in this world that we know and love.
In this episode, he is given the opportunity to change his known future and still ends up deciding that his sacrifice is worth it. Harrowing stuff right there with Pike who's later sacrifice we know betters the federation in its pursuits.
Very cool to see Captain Kirk, great casting. Very recognisably him. The chemistry that Pike has with his crew especially Spoke is off the charts. Anson just knocks his performance out of the park. Very keen for season 2.
This is the Star Trek I know and love. Having seen all previous shows and movies. Senior Trekkie needs to do some personal re-evaluation.
My one quarrel is that I'm pretty sure Kirk warped away in his shuttle which again breaks canon as we saw in Discovery. Quiet possibly though can be shrugged off as this being a different timeline so they could've added warp to shuttle craft. This line of thinking is a bit cheap though
All in all great start to this new Star Trek series and looking forward to more!
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
Replace laser eyes with bullets and guns and it's contemporary America
Absolutely terrifying because the boys continues to hit the nail on the head with the comparative symbolism between what's happening in the show and what's happening in America. If you are turned away because you think it's getting political... I don't know what show you've been watching for 4 seasons.
Lots of twists and turns, great episode to end season 4!
Better Call Saul: Plan and Execution (2022)
A very uncomfortable viewing experience
I don't remember blinking for one second. We've seen the plan all season and now we witness the execution. We know from breaking bad that Jimmy wins this feudal war against HHM. The entire show as been building up to this but at what cost... You could watch this ducking show before breaking bad and love it on its own. This entire series is a foreshadow for what happens in breaking bad. Specifically in regards to the rise of saul. Everything that Chuck and Howard have ever said about Jimmy has always been right! And this episode solidifies that once again. Masterful storytelling to make me feel for Howard. You see his reputation crumble before your very eyes and it's actually surprisingly difficult to watch because he knows exactly what Jimmy has done and pieces it together to the T but no one believes him because it is rightfully insane.
Sucks we have to wait a few months until the final half of the final season but this episode sets it up to be a great end.
Heartstopper (2022)
Beautiful, sweet and something for everyone
A very sweet coming of age tv show that I started at 1am and cried my way through the binge. It took me back to my high school days and I recognised many of the feelings minus the actual human connection. This show would've helped me as a teen if it were around 6 years ago as the shows themes were just a pipe dream in my head. The dialogue somewhat reflected that pipe dream/fantasy world I lived in, in high school but maybe not for those who were/are lucky enough to experience a relationship in high school. Great cast who conveyed some pretty raw emotion.
I think young royals is just a slight bit better. It's a little more mature but heartstopper is pretty perfect for a younger audience. As I said though, still cried pretty hard.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Honestly I don't know what you all expected and I don't think you did too
Get over yourselves, we are seeing great Star Wars content right here. Get a bit of perspective. We haven't seen where boba fett is in character development in chronological order since 1983. He was always so overrated and both Mandalorian and book of boba fett have given him some really rich character development since we saw him in the clone wars. Lots of world building is happening and we are seeing some great lore with worlds and alien races. There a a lot of gaps being filled building on what is to come with this heavily sort out time period in the skywalker saga. I'm seeing a massive whinge that Fett being pretty absent in the second and third last episode. Despite the first half of the show satisfactorily being all about him and where he is at (you can't complain about fett's story and then complain he isn't in it enough. Every character we are seeing in this show from ahsoka to luke, cad bane to grogu, mando to the marshal has a history with Fett. The force binds their paths together and guides them.
Ozark: Sanctified (2022)
Julie Garner...
Absolutely breathtaking episode. Cried my lungs out. Julie Garner is a powerhouse performer throughout this entire series but she transcended into something else in this one. Am literally shaking as I write this.
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
A fitting final to a phenomenal series
I didn't love the Marco arc that much. Mainly because I wasn't a massive fan of the actor. Melodramatic pretty boy. I did love the idea of the belters forming the free navy and going at it alone against the inners and Mars and it was a fitting end to the storyline. But I found Marco to be so annoying in a show with intense and rich characters. The war for the protomolecule and the formation of the ring was what made the series a standout to anything else. This was a great end to the arc but I hope there's more to come in the form of spin offs or movies because I didn't feel that Marco carried the weight of the finale of the show. Nevertheless, the purpose of his character in my eyes was for the rise of the true free belter leader, Drummer! I need more!!!
Another Life: A Better Earth (2021)
I'm only watching this for the cast at this point
This show is all over the place. This is a group of the most unstable and incapable scientist/space explorers. It's almost farcical. There is supposedly a charter that says do not colonise a planet with a civilisation on it but the trigger happy colonist shoots to kill on first contact. And then blames the other chick for ruining their chances of establishing a colony and the other characters don't even object to that hypocrisy. It's melodrama trying hard to be serious.
Loki (2021)
It foolishly took me this long to jump on board the Loki train
I liked Loki as the antagonist but never understood the hype around him. This absolutely was the last nail on the wall when I was like ok yep... now I get it. This is a must see show. Not only for its quality but it's essential to view it if you are planning on watching the next phase of marvel.
Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
As someone who has seen literally every Star Trek episode and film...
This is honestly a great series. Without any spoilers, the writing team refreshingly play around with establish Trek tropes and storyline's. I would've loved watching this as a kid and would be a pretty great introduction to Star Trek for kids to ease them into Star Trek (a lot of the stuff in the older shows are pretty mature by today's standards). Season 2 has some great throwbacks for older trekkies. It's awesome to see a Tamarian security chief.
Beasts of No Nation (2015)
6 years later and I still refuse to watch this again
This is the one film that I just can't bring myself to watching again. It's a must see but too raw to handle. Great cast, very convincing and emotional.
Young Royals (2021)
Started episode 5 and had to take a breather to come and review this show because I was crying too much
I won't give anything away but when I heard about this show and it's premise I didn't give it a chance because I thought it was too cliche. But holy moley. I almost gave it a 1 star because it was hitting a lot of raw emotions.
Don't watch it if you are gay and single or gay and have gone through some tough relationship problems. I realised when watching it that I have never really seen anything like this.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Decommissioned (2021)
Good soldiers follow orders
I'm perplexed by fellow reviewers. Watch it for yourself, you'll be blown away. The complexity, the story, the sound design, the characters (oh my god). This episode has been misappropriated as filler. While I believe filler should not be a term used to disparage something, this definitely wasn't filler. Filler for what? No one ever explains themselves when they say filler.
Them: Covenant I. (2021)
Sick, twisted and raw.
This series just gets more intriguing and intriguing. The character development is so harrowing and strong that it makes it near impossible not to watch. I've seen reviewers reviewing this episode negatively because of what happens in the episode being so stomach churning and disturbing that they can't bare. I mean, it is rated for mature audiences only and this pushes that to the limits but the message remains the same. This is an everyday lived fear and unfortunately reality that African Americans and many other deemed minority peoples go through. I watched it on Amazon and it gave me a clear warning as what was about to happen so I don't know what you're complaining about. You're the one who kept watching.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Victory and Death (2020)
You will cry. I just wish there was a bit more
I watched this episode at 2am when I was tired. It woke me up. I couldn't sleep until i finally fell at 4am. It was astonishingly beautiful and a perfect end to the clone wars because of how hopeless it made you feel. The entire series was filled with hope and collectiveness and the finale broke that in spite of knowing how this series would end.
Dark (2017)
There truly is nothing like this series
There are truly no words that can accurately describe this tv series. You lose yourself in this world. The story tellers trust their audience enough to do whatever the hell they want however the hell they want to do it. The story, despite the content matter flows naturally and made me personally believe in such thing as time travel. I just wish game of thrones hired these writers to write properly finish off the time travel aspect of game of thrones as I think GRRM is writing something very similar.
You MUST watch this in German with subs
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Reviews reviewing the show per episode rather than a series as a whole
We were told this wasn't going to be the same Star Trek. We were told that jean luc would be in a totally different position and frame of mind. It's a very different world from the world we left off and in many aspects, Gene's envisioned world is yet to come which is why every Star Trek series resonates in today's world. One of the biggest reasons as to why we didn't see more Star Trek series is because they simply ran out of stories. Many of the episodic stories were being repeated. Star Trek Picard is a narrative driven series (like discovery) rather than each episode having its own uniqueness which is why it seems so different. It's building the foundations of a story and taking us on a journey to a conclusion like most tv series' today.
This review has been made literally after season 1 episode 4 but already it's grasped on so many things that the previous tv shows have laid down foundations. The biggest two being, the misuse and abuse of android tech and the federation as being held back by the political. The Captain in every series has had to struggle with the restraints of the federation, Picard less so due to his stern and strong beliefs in it. It is completely in character for him to remove himself from the federation after they left the romulan race to die as probably the main reason for his departure. I'm sure we will learn that the federation dug their own grave in regards to the android synth tech mainly because of the data and doctor bashir stories.
Each episode seems to be designated to introducing the new characters but their introduction is interwoven into progressing the story. Rather than each episode having some sort of social meaning behind it, these characters I predict, when all together, will convey a united social message rather than individual characters being designated with individual stories with individual social meanings in the story being told like told in previous Trek.
Absolutely loving it so far, feel as if I'm back into the Star Trek universe
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Reviewing the Campaign.
This COD is the COD I remember. Brutal and raw. Each campaign mission is like you are literally playing a movie. It's almost too brutal and traumatic. The sound design is beyond phenomenal. The voice acting is on point. The stories and characters are instantly loveable from the first minutes. Each mission I literally pause the game and question if I am playing the game or watching a cutscene.
Young Sheldon: An 8-Bit Princess and a Flat Tire Genius (2018)
Heartfelt episode that reminds me of my early gaming days
Wow...
What a truely special episode that tugs on your heart strings
Really took me back to the early days playing Alex Kid late at night with my Aunty and forgetting what time it was. Great episode for Georgie's character too, loving the development between the kids and the older family members that we didn't really get to see much on the parent show.
The Walking Dead: The Calm Before (2019)
I have never watched a show that got so bad and ended up being resurrected so beautifully
I loved the show from season one and stuck with it amongst all the unnecessary hate. Until season 7 and 8 came along which destroyed the series for me. However...
this season has been absolutely phenomenal and I really didn't think it would survive without rick but it has and it's so juicy and glorious
This episode absolutely brought the love back for the show. You felt like you were standing alongside the characters again and it was beautiful. The cinematography, the dialogue, the music were all so perfect and grounded in the story. This season has made me fear the walkers again so hats off to Kang and the writers for being able to do that thanks to the threat of the whisperers. The show has a real purpose again and this episode soldified that. I really want them to re-do season 7 and 8 with Kang at the helm
The Walking Dead: Last Day on Earth (2016)
one of the greatest episode of the walking dead
Now, I understand why people disliked this episode. All that tension built up to a cliffhanger, I get it. However, look at the episode as a whole. It was perfect writing, perfect acting and the action and suspense was above and beyond. Negan gave the best villain intro that I have ever seen in any TV series. People are far too concerned with a death to keep them satisfied.
The walking dead season finales have always given us some sort of closure. This season finale is unique because we are left up in arms with what is going to happen.
We were promised a death and we got one. We just don't know who it is. We know it's a much-loved character. What I got from this was, for far too long we have come to know that if you're in Rick's core group, you will survive. This finale revived the notion of nobody is safe.
My whole opinion will change if the death is not worthy of all this suspense. It HAS to be; Rick, Daryl, Maggie, Michonne, Glenn or Carl (even though it's 100% definitely not him or Eugene). This event has to be story changing and if one of these people were to die, it would be.
Breaking Bad (2008)
With the series finale coming up on its two year anniversary in September, I reflect.
I have always been meaning to review Breaking Bad, and with its two-year anniversary coming up this year I thought I would reflect on life without Breaking Bad.
If you have never watched Breaking Bad or have intended on watching it but never got around to it, the main message that I want to get out is, it is a show that you have to watch. If you tell me that I never get around to watching a TV series, I will immediately shut you up say, Breaking Bad has to be an exception. There are only a handful of shows that come close to the competing to Breaking Bad with Game of Thrones being equal in amazingness in my opinion. The amount of themes Breaking Bad directly and indirectly touch on is astonishing and is the main reason as to why I adore the show. That and the in-depth characterisation, compelling storyline and episodes and scenes that literally take your breath away (for those who have finished, Ozymandias, Crawl Space, Face-off, To'hajiilee are just some of the greatest pieces of entertainment that I have ever witnessed which is on the scale of both movies, TV shows and video games).
I have never and will never forget Breaking Bad, even if later down the track a TV show does beat it in terms of my own personal taste of entertainment. At the moment, Breaking Bad will always remain on par with other amazing TV shows such as Game of Thrones.
If you haven't watched it yet, I promise you will have the best time watching it. Don't think it's an easy watch, they deal with many themes and many scenes will make you toss and turn in bed but it is worth it. You also have to sit and absorb the series to fully comprehend it. The one person I know who hasn't liked it, passively watched the show and knew heaps of spoilers.
Once you've finished, Better Call Saul is one season into the series and is a perfect spin off for Breaking Bad and stands on its own as a series.
10+ out of 10 for Breaking Bad
The Walking Dead: A (2014)
Incredible. This episode was so near perfect
For starters, I have loved this season, in fact I have loved every season and every episode, but this season has been extra special. The amount of character development has never been better. The awesome storyline and all the action was just so amazing. Now for the season final... This was the icing on the cake. I don't know how too far gone will be ever be topped, this episode didn't top it but it still was very very very satisfying. I am not going to say much because I don't want to spoil it but anyway, the flashbacks used provided a very beautiful and artistic contrast. The episode was also full of suspense and a little traumatising. I also loved this episode because it had a great mixture of character development as well as suspense and action. OH MY GOD how are we meant to wait until October... Anyway I give the episode a 9 out of 10 really only because it wasn't as good as too far gone, but it still was a satisfying final.
