Get a Way (2002)
7/10
Slow but enjoyable French movie
28 June 2003
The protagonists of this film (titled "Get A Way" in English), Didier and Anne, meet randomly when Didier's van collides with Anne's bicycle in a Parisian street. The two strike up a friendship as Didier promises to fix Anne's bicycle, and the remainder of the film explores their relationship, as well as Didier and Anne's complex relationships with their parents.

The film is somewhat slow, especially at the beginning, when most of the "action" involves dialogue between Didier and Anne in either his van or apartment. However, the last third makes the film worthwhile as the two attempt to straighten out their tortured relationships with their parents. Didier has not spoken with his father in twenty years, and his father suspects that Didier is homosexual. Anne continually disappoints her overbearing parents who want her to be an academic and professional success. I found the film's emphasis on the need for open, honest discussion of one's emotions to be revealing.

Overall, I found this typically French movie to be enjoyable. Overall, I would give a grade of "B".

Admirable effort but a bit slow
19 June 2003
Bruce, a French 24 year old, moves to Rome to study at the Villa Medicis and develops a crush on Mateo, a handsome Italian man of the same age who is interning at the Villa. After a period of infatuation, the two commence a short but intimate relationship. However, Mateo ultimately shuns Bruce. The remainder of the film deals with how Bruce copes with Mateo's rejection.

The acting in the film (especially the actor playing Bruce) is quite good, the shots of Rome are beautiful, and the movie will definitely be appealing to those that like European-style movies. However, overall I thought that the pace of the movie was too slow, and the plot was overly dramatic and plodding. By the time that the unexpected ending occurs, I was glad that the movie was over. Overall, I would give it a "B".

American Masters: The Education of Gore Vidal (2003)
Season 17, Episode 8
10/10
Highly educational and informative
18 June 2003
This documentary about Gore Vidal was excellent. I knew very little about Vidal, so this was a great introduction to his life and wit. The film did a good job of setting forth his political philosophy and worldview, and I left the auditorium thinking that I would like to learn even more about Vidal and to delve into his historical novels. Overall, it is highly recommended.
