Rear Window (1954)
Perfect film
Rear Window is a perfect film. I wrote my thesis on it at university and I've watched it probably more than any other film. It's absolutely stunning and shocking how much it achieves without an actual film soundtrack or musical score.
All the sounds you hear come in from the open window. It it a lesson in editing and pacing. A masterclass in how to build suspense without relying on music. This is far and away, in my opinion, Hitchcock's best work. His masterstroke. Though other movies in his catalogue get more attention, this one should be required viewing for every young horror filmmaker. Even though it lands far less in horror and more in maybe a crime thriller genre, a young filmmaker can learn so much about how to build suspense and pace a scene in all genres.
10/10. If you haven't seen it, watch it.
Insidious (2010)
Popcorn flying
I remember when I first saw this movie it was in a packed theater full of people eager to be scared. We were sitting kind of in the middle of the theater because at that time there weren't assigned seats and we got there early to get the good seats.
There is one epic scare in the movie, I won't spoil it here but you probably know the one if I say "red face," and a woman a few rows ahead of me was so scared that she jumped and accidentally threw her popcorn up into the air. The entire theater was scared but suddenly erupted in laughter with the woman. There's no better feeling than that at the theater. We shared that moment and that's the power of horror cinema.
Nope (2022)
Fantastic
This movie was so fun. I loved every minute of it. Such a blast from start to finish with a fantastic soundtrack and wonderful performances from each member of the cast.
I thought the writing is on point and the direction and cinematography was stellar. My only wish was that it leaned more into the horror I felt was promised in the trailer, but that's not a reason to dislike it. In fact, I enjoyed it despite my previous idea that it would be a horror movie. That's a win in my book and I think that shows just how exceptional the movie is.
I can't wait to see whatever fantastic story he cooks up next.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
good bloody fun
If you're going into this movie expecting a multimillion dollar budget movie with an Oscar nominated script, your going to be disappointed. This has been described to me as "a perfect experience for fans of B movie slashers" and that's exactly what I got. I'm glad I saw the movie in theaters (Mexico City) because I had a complete blast.
I think they pulled this off by being in on the joke. It almost plays as a satire of the slasher craze from the 80's. They knew they were making a Winnie the Pooh slasher and they leaned hard into the premise. I laughed, I was shocked (the deaths are all super fun and creative), and I was impressed by the cinematography and music (especially for this budget which I think is probably less than $100k). In short, it's just a good time if you know what you're signing up for.
Similar to Terrifier 2, this is a super low budget horror movie getting a huge amount of attention and press and that's so exciting to me as a lifelong horror fan. I personally want to live in a world where that happens more often. So yeah I gave it two extra stars for that reason alone. They pulled off the impossible.
Go see it in theaters and support true indie horror films.
