Mithya (2008)
A must watch because there are not many such in Hindi movies
I am a lazy person and generally don't like to put comments for movies. BUT, considering that I was about to give this movie a miss based on my friend's review and after watching it,I realized that probably I should convey the message to other like-minded people who appreciate different and intelligent cinema. This is a pretty good movie.
I heard people say that the movie drags a bit in the later parts, I don't agree. It suits the tone of the movie at that time. It is very funny to begin with and ends nicely. I like those movies where you have something to think/talk about after having watched it. This is one such movie. Ranveer Shorey has given a brilliant performance. It must be watched because there are not many such movies in Hindi cinema. And I rate it above Bheja Fry which too I liked.
Babel (2006)
Worth a watch, but not for everyone.
Think Babel and you think of the mythical tower, filled with people talking in tongues, each unintelligible to the others.
The Bible suggests that this was a trick played by god. Ambitious humans were attempting to build a tower, near Babylon, that could reach Heaven; by creating a whole slew of languages, God ensured they wouldn't be in sync with their plans, and would find themselves lost in the morass of their own linguistic confusion.
The centuries-old tale inspires director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, in his latest offering Babel, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchet, to show that inspite of globalization, the internet, and the shrinking of the world into a global village, human beings essentially are yet to learn to communicate with one another.
The storyline revolves around a rifle, that connects four different lives in four countries: Japan, Morocco, the US and Mexico.
Four different people who will never meet each other are linked by a small incident involving a child firing off a rifle; that one act and how it changes the lives of four families drives the plot.
The rifle shot hits an American tourist (Cate Blanchett) who is traveling with her husband Brad Pitt in a last-ditch effort to make her marriage work. The incident becomes global news; contemporary issues like terrorism come into play, and in the reaction to the incident, the director shows how ignorant we are of each other's culture.
Elsewhere, a Mexican nanny crosses the US border to attend her son's wedding, loses her way, and is arrested by the American police. Also key to the plot is a Japanese tourist who first sells the rifle, and his daughter, a sex-starved deaf-mute whose portrayal has to be seen to be believed.
Inarritu brings past, present and future together in a way that leaves you in awe of his storytelling skills, and his grip on narrative. Also worth mentioning is the comparisons between life in the first and third worlds, told in non-judgemental fashion by the director.
Personally, I myself was a little disturbed after watching this movie. Can't say why but it didn't meet the expectations I had set after watching Crash. Still worth a watch, but not for everyone.
My Wife's Murder (2005)
Not good
I had some expectations from this movie but it is useless...
seems like a news story about an accidental murder.. acting is OK from all main actors. There are no songs which is a good thing.
The main problem is story, the person accidentally kills his wife who always suspects him for affair with his assistant. and then how the person is trying to escape from law and how he involves his assistant in this makes the rest of the story..
It is very slow at times. Also sometimes it gives feeling as if director is trying to make it a horror movie or something like that. And those crazy door shutting sounds ( reminds me of Vaastu Shastra )... they will drive you crazy once again.. guess the RGV effect.. I'd not recommend it to any one.
My advice - stay away from it.. 5/10
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Obi wan vs Anakin Skywalker
First of all, i am not a very huge fan of star wars movies. In fact, i would rather play the star wars game on best possible gaming console than watching the movies. But i find this movie better than last two of this second trilogy. Their is this feeling of desperation and will to become most powerful by anakin skywalker which is the foundation of this movie. And it is quite nicely shown how he turns toward dark side. performances are not great but decent enough. It also gives answer to various questions like how the twins were separated and who is the dark lord who lures anakin towards dark side.
I would give it a 7 out of 10. Really good for a one-time watch and for the big star-wars fans, there is no stopping.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Unforgettable
An unforgettable experience.. i had heard a lot about this, about the superb twist and all.. so I decided to give it a try and wow, it was better than expectations... though one thing that is important in order to enjoy this movie is that you shouldn't expect something out of the world... I just just thought whatever happens, i am watching a good movie and it can't be very bad... so with moderate expectations, you will certainly end up enjoying it.
So what makes this movie so special? It is not that twist only. The acting is good by almost each actor. Baldwin and spacey are specially good. The script is well written. Some people may point out few loop holes but then, they can also very well point out flaws in Almighty's creations. Direction is wonderful,i would admit. Singer is now one of my favorites.
So all in all, this is one of the best movies in any genre, that i have watched and no sane movie lover should miss it. Just grab the DVD, sit on your sofa with some snacks, watch it at one go... then rewind and watch the last 15 minutes or so again in case you are watching it for the first time... and be amazed...

Shabd (2005)
Good different movie
My initial impression about this movie was that it would be yet another love story( which i hate so much i can't tell you ), but still decided to watch it as i didn't get the tickets for 'Black'. But i'll say that this movie is different and that was the precise reason, i liked it. The movie is all about an author Shaukat ( Sanjay Dutt ), a very complicated character played brilliantly by Sanju. He is a booker-prize winner author whose last book was discarded by all for being very 'unreal'. So after a gap of 2 years, he decides to write a 'real' story.... I won't go into much details of his adventure...he asks her wife(aishwarya) to have a romantic relationship with a younger guy(Zayed), and he writes on the events taking place in their lives ... he tries to dictate the scenarios....tries to predict everything that will happen in their lives just as he predicts the fate of the characters in his book... Sanjay Dutt has given a great performance...aish is looking beautiful..and zayed is as always average... One thing that i didn't like about this movie is that the actors were crying a lot more that was expected/necessary in the situations....anyway, a good movie by a debutant director...
Vaada (2005)
surprisingly good
Surprisingly good, thats what i'll say, this is a thriller and never loses it's track which is very un-bollywoodish.... the 2 actors - rampal and zayed have performed well, zayed has overacted somewhere..in all, the performance from the lead 2 actors is good. but the actress- amisha, does not live up to the standards set by them. the story starts with amisha found hanging to the death, there are 2 persons in that house - husband rampal, who is blind and zayed... then some interesting twists are involved and the nice thing is that we watch only one story, not many stories merged together, and that is the precise reason, i liked this movie. 7/10
