masterfully written
4 March 2024
French canadian humor at his finest. Francois Létourneau did it again. After the Serie noire et 'Les invincibles', he strike again with this gem of a show : 2 couples from the same Neighborhood in Québec Sainte-Foy in the 70s want to try something new and spice up their life. They get themselves into criminality. Its far more easy than anticipated and everything start to roll on its own until the 'real' mafia get wind of their new hobbies.

Based on a real event, this show is funny, awkward, and all the character are masterfully written and interpreted by all the cast. I find myself laughing at every scene while this wild adventure keep on giving. Patrice Robitaille, especially is brilliant. Every line of his is gold.

The third and finale season just hit, and the stake as never been higher. Thanks Mr Létourneau. Waiting for you next project... and maybe play a different character this time ? ;)

original nightmares fuel
18 January 2024
This show is slow, calm and yet it will surprise you at every turn. The story is simple : A few crew member dropped on an uncharted planet try to get to their ship. The planet itself crawl with life and creature that react to this group of strangers disturbing their life. In their journey, they will encounter all sort of thing, learn to navigate with the environment and adapt...

This show is disturbing because it slowly embrace how powerless we are toward the force that surround us. There is some scary concept there, and others straight out mind blowing. The world is beautiful yet dangerous and we are constantly reminded how fragile human are.

Dont skip this show unless you re unable to focus and embrace a simple yet incredible show.

stick to directing
24 December 2023
Zack snyder need to set his ego aside and let the writers do their job. He is an incredible director. He know how to set the mood in a single frame. I didnt mind his overuse of slowmotion that definitely add drama and 'cool factor'.. But that script is uninspiring at best. It encapsulate all the cliché trope you can think of and then drag it for a solid hour for a gathering party fiesta. Go to this planet, recruit that character type, go to this planet, recruit him also... rinse and repeat until the undeserving final act. It manage to get boring, really fast despite a stereotypical but strong start. The dialogs are dumb, the story is dumb and Zack need to stick to direction if he want to be taken seriously. This was a joke, not even waiting for the second part, i dont care.. Characters are unidimensional and a parody of the stereotype the are suppose to embody. The visuals are great,.world building is good, and the fews action scene there is, are great. Hire some good writers and stop reusing the 50 years old trope we already know.

Cory stole this season
9 November 2023
Billy Crudup is amazing in this show. Every line delivered by him got me cracking up or emotional. He is such a complex character and it would have been so easy to make unlovable, cold, unidimensional. Billy just lift it up, and the writers gave him the best line.

That last scene with Bradley had me in tears. When the credit rolled, my wife and I discussed how his character stole every scene he is in.

Alex and Bradley were a bit off tough. Alex still is on her high horses where everybody owed her. She is entitle, ungratefull and overall frustrated by all her privileges.

Bradley is slowly braking up apart. In season 1 and 2, she is so driven, this unstoppable force of character.. Here, she cave in and become a victim. It is kind of sad to see to be honest.

Overall, i enjoyed this season, but I would take more screen time with Cory over Alex or Bradley.

Hope season 4 dont cast him off seeing how season 3 ended.

pure, raw, astonishingly good
6 November 2023
The story can seem a bit basic at time, but it take a turn and we dive into an adventure while traveling across great scenery in the feodal Japan. Everithing is depicted as it was. Woman condition at that time was abysmal, more objects to be traded around than actual human beeing. We explore the Japanese way in all his beauty and ugliness. Finally a show that doesnt take me by the hand... it IS NOT FOR CHILDREN. We explore their sexuality as freely as their way to eat noodles. It was there, here it is. Its also violent. It is a vengeance tale as typic as it get. But the setting, the animation, the voice acting, the imagery are all top notch. It show that everyone involve in the project loved their craft. A true master piece and the pinacle of animation serie for adult. I am just sad we will have to wait more than a year for the next instalment.

Stereotyped rom com
24 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I cannot believe this movie was made in 2023. Its scream first world problem! A white high school soccer captain hit his head hard enough to confuse his mean white blonde girlfriend with this other blonde white girl. But she is so much better... Luckily, his mean and stupid girlfriend is away on a trip and the parents of the boy are rich and invite the new couple on ski ressort. What could go wrong? Throw in there a love triangle, a sidekick roomate (black for good measure), an asian cameo and the love speech at the highshool danse at the end.... But we also have to pretend the new blonde is totaly over this romcom crap. She is a nerd, because they are the new thing nowaday. She doesnt beleive in love, only data... How stupid do you take your audience ? It was written by AI powered by monkeys.

After the Mcguffin !
13 October 2023
They dont even try anymore... they just assume that Tom would carry the tension with his intense stares and run fast enough to catch our attention.

The scenery, costume, music, direction, action are all top notch, as we would suspect from a MI movie. They are on rails to deliver something entertaining. But they rely way to much on the Cruise effect and the story is weak at best. The villain is way less interesting than than the last one. He is generic bad with pure hatred for humanity. No twist, no reveal, he is just after the eradication of everything for the sake of it. The famous stunt was so marketed that we only wonder when it will happen and when it does we say ''Oh... there it is.... nice''.

Tom assemble his crew and they all run for an hour after a Mcguffin. The fact that this is a two part movie is playing against itself. We dont have the usual payoff.

The MI franchise is usually a machine so well oiled , we forget how ridiculous it can be and we let our self being carried by the action. Here however, this movie is just the setup for the part 2 and we feel we didnt had the whole pie. This story isnt worth to be tell in this new anticlimactic format. It is basic at best. And there is enough downtime to let us think about the plot. Which is bad.

I am still curious about the end, but i hope it will be better than this generic action movie. Without the MI brand and the Cruise effect, it would have been lost and forgotten, and fairly so.

Ahsoka (2023– )
7/10
season 1 setup
5 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As usual, Disney is more eager to set the table than to give us an actual meal. Always this false promise that the next season will have the payoff of the current one.

Its not the worst star wars serie, but it could certainly improve in a lot of ways. Ahsoka is still an emotionless monk who doesnt sweat/struggle or even talk. Instead on passing on crucial informations, she stare and smirk.

Sabine and Ezra arent human either. After 10 years apart, they meet akwardly and never spoke a true sentence to each other. They laugh and avoid any subject of importance for half the season.

There is some moments that doesn't make any sense. Like when time is against them and they strolled with their snails friends at walking pace toward their objective, flying above and laughing at bad jokes.

They are literal sitting ducks. Luckily, the empire is as bad at aiming as usual and 2 tie fighter didn't manage to hit a huge, barely moving target... twice...

By the end, the trio need to run head first toward a tower while a destroyer bombard them from above.. no plan, no dialog, just RUN..

This serie doesn't commit to anything, doesn't take any risk.. they just setup the new season(s) and hope to not offend any fans. Really basic/lazy storytelling with greats visuals.

Thrawn is well portrayed. But despite his reputation and the fact that he repeated constantly 'not to underestimated a Jedi'', he clearly send his troops scarcely. When he 'lose' he just say 'acceptable losses' and move on to his next nefarious goal

Baylan is the only interesting character. Only because they barely reveal anything about him. The regretted Ray Stevenson is perfect for the role. I do hope they recast him and not CGI/AI him.. Again, we just set his story up for the next seasons...

Please tell us a story.. If a movie like Rogue one is able to tell a story in 2 hours, a 6 hours season should be able to close a few thread... Dont be afraid to commit and go for it... A 6 hours setup is way to long.

Also, character must stop staring at each other every 30 second and freaking talk to each other. Not by metaphor or Hyperbole... just exchange information, like normal human being.. : ''Hey Sabine.. OMG!!!'' ''Ezra!!! (bursting with joy, hugging) We need to hurry, dark jedi are on my tail, Thrawn is about to jump out and it is our only way out of this galaxy. We need a plan! ''...

They all feel like AI robot who booted together.

I am tired of this half baked show. I feel like watching a teaser rather than an actuel story. Great visual, no substance.

The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022)
6/10
no commitment, no risk
6 September 2023
Bobba fett is suppose to be ruthless, greedy and badass. One does not become a county hunter from the kindness of his heart. But disney couldn possibly have their protagonist beeing a bad egg. He must be benevolant, selfless, peacefull. They managed to get one of the most badass character, make him survive, somehow a long trip into the sarlac pitt, awaken boring. They sure love to change men. Luke and Han become old grumpy shmuck who failed at everything. Boba fett become boring. The only good scene involve the mandalorian and few short lived cameo. I would have loved a true gritty gruesome western-like... not this soap opera redemption, protect the poor BS. Stop trying to fix the men in this universe and give us a meaningfull story!!

Secret Invasion (2023– )

boring, stereotypical mess
30 August 2023
6 episode of 30 minute is a MCU movie nowaday. And this is perhaps the worst one ever made in the MCU. Quantumania was at least ambitious. And i chukkle 2 or 3 time during Love and thunder. Here? Nothing... not even a smirk. It is so boring, it is sad. Samuel L Jackson is just sitting in chairs giving monologue to whoever cross his path, try to convince everyone how relevant he still is. He is not. The antagonist is just pure eveil with no context... he is just bad. So far from the menacing and convincing Thanos. The final combat is plain stupid with arms cameos and make every hero completely trivial if you think about it... It seems the writers just laugh at their fans for loving the MCU.. How stupid should we be to want more from this universe... I am so sad it has become such a farce.

Ahsoka: Part One: Master and Apprentice (2023)
Season 1, Episode 1
7/10
rebels continue
25 August 2023
This was a first good episode. Introducing the character we knew from rebels and few new one. Everyone does a decent job but everything seem to be on a straight script. Again, we meet 2 new 'dark Jedi' who escaped order 66. New antagonist we never heard before. How many did really survived this poorly executed 66 that took more than 30 years in planing ? They sure missed a lot of them.. A little back story on that event would have been nice to set them up.. Still, the fantastic and stoic Ray Stevenson is menacing and i could not have ask for a better villain for this season. I hope we see great things from him despite his convenient apparition.

Ahsoka herself is a typical modern female Disney lead : No doubt, no struggle, overcome anything without a sweat, on a straight linear goal with macguffin for her to find and point to the next step.

It is sure on a better path than the abyssimal Obi wan, but it still need to prove his relevance. Hope and see.

great show , one major flaw
14 August 2023
This show is great. I watch it with my kids and they love it. The animation is great, the characters are enjoyable and the voice acting is top notch. I have 1 major gripe with it tough : the villain. Both father and daughter are portrayed as villain with good heart. They are doing what they are doing to save the one they love convince they are doing something good.... the writer try very hard to make them 'Not that bad' while doing the most viscious thing, clearly taking a dark path, trying to convince themselve it is the only way. They are either evil or really stupid to think this is the right way to do things... If only they stop for one second and talk to each other... My kids doesnt understand that, but I, as a more trained audience, it can be frustrating to watch sometime.

more question than answer
26 July 2023
Audience assume, when they start a show/movie that the it will tell a story. The start can be mysterious, but eventually, things start to make sense. We begin to understand the universe we fell into and the story will unravelled new mysteries for us to get hook on to. If there is only spooky events on top of new spooky event without ever give the audience a shadow of an answer, it start to crumble on to itself.

FROM start with a promising setup. It is good scary, creepy atmosphere, great characters. Few people trapped in a town where monster chase them at night. Simple.. yet mysterious... I am well into season 2 now.. and we are still adding question, spooky new stuff, new mystery and we never answer a single question.

It start to feel like the writer are working in 2 teams episode by episode. The winner team is the one that will come up with new weird sh%$t to throw at the audience... ''Lets throw in a ballerina... oh oh and ventroliquist puppet that cry blood. What about a weird jenga tower... "

I really hope i am wrong. But i have the feeling this show will end or get cancel without answering a single main question... because it seems they have no clues where it goes more than us. They just make it up as it goes, shoveling more insane spooky stuff and hope we dont notice how shallow the show is becoming.

It is not my problem the writers painted themselves into a corner.. plan ahead... That what a show is supposed to be. A lenghty movie. Stop greenlight a concept and ask for a story... spooky stuff on top of more spooky stuff isnt compelling.. Start answering question and move forward... It is not fulfilling for a writer and frustrating for an audience... Right now, the show is just characters drama and creepy moment.

Extraction II (2023)
8/10
pure action perfectly directed
16 June 2023
The story is thin as a paper. There are catch phrases that will make you eyes roll up. Stereotypical characters you met a few hundred time before since the 80s. You will see things coming a mile away and the main bad guy is bullet proof et truly evil.

You dont watch this movie for the story or the emotional connection to the characters. But there are one of the best action sequences in movie i have ever see. The editing and directing of the action here has been mastered. The prison extraction, the train, the building... all are unique and so well crafted that you forget the dumb motive and just enjoy the ride.

Just go with it and you will have a blast.

convenience realm
31 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The last good MCU movie was no way home. That movie still flirted with the aftermath of ENDGAME and they gave us Tobey and Andrew to sweet the pill of how convoluted this movie was.

Here, however, no cameo, no nostalgia, no introduction, we are rushed into a "new adventure" by sheer bad luck and miscommunication (again). After their 18 years old daughter built a quantum communication device in the granpa basement (because, why not), the happy family is sucked into the quantum realm. Because, of course. And from there, we are rushed into a complex, overcolorfull world with faction, aliens and wars..

"No time to explain!! Drink this convenient purple jello to understand every alien and meet my humanoid friend&";. We cannot appreciate the world building and all the element the art team created because we need to advance the plot... We are going from A to B with no one really talk to one another aside from clever one liner and predictables jokes.

After 20 min, I stopped caring and just went along with it... From that point, the script is all written in stone. The joke felt flat, the dialogs felt wrong. The only good thing from that movie is Jonhatan Major as Kang. His presence is menacing and his delivery is on point. Introduced in Loki as another variant, he clearly is the right fit for the role. I just hoped we had a better movie to support this official entrance.

If you built a world that complex and that vast, we need to be introduce to it to be able to care. Look at avatar way of water. Despite critics and a very predictable, the introduction to the world is impeccable. I cared about the children, the wales, the water tribe becaus they take the time and invest in lnowing them... Here, alien died left and right... war is raging, cities burn, ship explode... and it does nothing aside beeing flashy and boom.

Paul Rudd tried is best beeing relax and smirky but even him cant slow the pace of this convoluted story. The one liners are cringy and some characters are plain stupid. This one continue to sink the MCU deeper. I have high hope for GotG3 . Those last few movies were a disapointment. They need to slow down and build a great narrative around a main goal and stop trying to tell own story. The MCU work best when all the heroes work togheter toward a bigger story ; Winter soldier, civil war avengers were the pinacle. I am sorry to see them take this path.

The Last of Us: Left Behind (2023)
Season 1, Episode 7

The night of your life
27 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first episode of the show where i have mixed feelings. They over milked this story we already knew by a 2 lines dialogs. We knew Ellie got bit at a mall and her friend didnt survive. Did we need 45 minutes of "fun activities" and waiting for the inevitable lurking zombie to strike ? With only 3 episodes left, we need to keep up the pace. Yes we got a backstory for Ellie, but they dragged it too much. The acting, directions, dialogs, decors are all top notch. But we didnt need all those precious minutes to tell this small story. It is still great television. We do care about the 2, but we know what will happen to them. The worst part is we didnt even see the end of it, the saddest part : Her friend turning with an immuned and confused Ellie. Maybe in the next episode, wich mean we still have minutes to waste on this backstory. I am not sure about this one and it definitely feel like a filler sqeezed into a already packed show.

Incredible !
11 February 2023
This show is a master class on how to tell a simple story with complex characters. There is no bad guy and heroes, only humans... humans reacting to what the life throw their way. Every characters have gone trough hell and they each have their reason to do what they must to endure and survive.

This episode got me right in the heart.10 years ago, I was genuinely surprise how a game manage to make me feel all those emotions... in a freaking zombie game. And now, the show let me discover a whole new version of the same story. And a better one IMO.

The writers, directors and actors achieved something truly unique here. This is how to do it. Please continue.

annoying little girl syndrome
8 February 2023
The main problem with this show is the main character. She constantly put herself at risk, do something incredibly stupid, dont communicate with other what she clearly should communicate, never put her phone on vibrate while spying, and she is CONSTANTLY tell everybody that she suck, she is a disgrace, a failure... That all she talk about. We get it, she is in depression. All others character are either ennemies or are helping her for some reason. She keeps lying, doing the exact thing she promise she would not do and her friends are all sticking around. It is annoying at best and frustrating most of the time. We want to scream at the screen '' Dont do that!!! '' , ''Have you at least muet your god damn phone'', ''Dont follow that guy with your red Gucci coat''... The only way the writers seems to advance the narrative is to put their protagonist in harms way and accidentally step into crucial informations.. She also have those annoying numerous flash back where she talk with herself. In the first season, it was kind of usefull, but in the second season, it is just more of her self inflicting insults. And while the other characters are enjoyable, funny even. The annoying main one is too much for me to love, even like that show. The number of time she could have juste talk, exchange information and instead just storm off.. Her life is a mess, she always run somewhere she forgot she had planned, everybody call her all the time... our heads are spinning by the sheer amount of things she must do, go, attend. O yhea... and every time the camera cut, she has a different outfit... to the point where it is laughable. She left in a hurry to Iceland with not luggages step out of the plane with a bright new coat.. pants and shoes... well, this is not for me i guess.

double audience problem?
7 February 2023
With almost 50 year of content, star wars fans are really diversifies ranging from 5 to 99 years old. Is Star wars for kids or for mature audience. There are shows that only address core fan (Andor) and are clearly not aimed at children... But why, when it is, there is the need to dumb it down so much. Omega is so dumb, so annoying and yet, lead these hard core veterans into 'adventures' were she put herself at risk, go somewhere she is not suppose too, deviate from the plan, disobey straight simple orders... Why they keep bringing her around when she clearly is liability to all. Why kid show must have a kid protagonist? Why kid show must have a 25 minute story and conclude at the end of an episode ? 'lets go to this planet, saving this species or disable this threat, happy ending ? This is easy formulaic storytelling and the 'kid show' is the excuse to use it. Kids can follow a much more complex narrative trough multiple episodes. But that ask more from writer who have to stop and think about what they are about to give us. After 1.5 season, this show is useless at best and contribute to lessen the SW universe at worse. We learn nothing and it is not entertaining. This is not a double audience problem, it is lazy writing problem. Stop introducing new throwable characters every episode and start developing those who are already there. All the bad batch are unidimensional and stereotypical. Tell us something meaningfull.

spectacular
20 December 2022
The first Avatar had a really weak story. One we already seen a dozen time. It is pochahontas, Danse with wolves or every outcast trying to integrate tribal people while his kind, the evil civilized white want to exterminate them and extract ressources or conquer the lands.

Despite that, James Cameron give us a spectacular cinematographic experience. The music, the world building, the culture. Every little details are tought of to completely immerse the audience into Pandora... The story telling is pretty straight forward, we see things coming a mile away. But we are riding along like hypnotized by the world created for Us.

12 years later, Cameron did it again. Very predictable script, but it manage to get us enjoy the 3h30 ride and beeing in Awe toward this incredible spectacle. It is more about Jake Sully 'family' this time and once again, they are outcast in a new tribe trying to learn new ways. This add a whole new dimension to this world. By the end, we have a glimpse of what Cameron will be undertaking for the next 4 movies. And if he is doing this right, this could easily become one of the biggest franchise ever. I dont doubt Cameron capacity to take us where he want to go. This director know how to tell a story, even if it is one we have heard before. He is that good.

We shall wait and see.

I, for one, was glad to come back to Pandora.

They landed it
14 October 2022
Finally, dialogs that doesnt seems to have been written by corporative robots. We started to care about some characters that needed much more screen time.

This last episode give me hope for the next seasons because this one was a snooze fest that care more about checking boxes than developing characters. Finally, we have some writing that actually mean something aside from pretty quotes and advance a global narrative.

I dont care much about the chronological adaption. Yes, they squeeze 2000 years (ish) into one generation. But i think, it was necessary. Either that or kill every mortal each episode with a 100 year time jump. It would have been a nightmare, story wise.

The last episode doesnt redeemed the season, wich, in my opinion, was very badly paced with a bad focus. Some scenes were cringe and badly acted and scripted. While the visuals are always extremly pleasing, I did not care about any character aside from Durin and hi wife.

In this last episode, they had no choice to go full throttle, overcompensating perhaps for lack of rythm of the season.

One scene still drag for way too long and again, focused on the wrong characters.

I am hopefull for season 2. But please, kick the corporate boomer out of the writting room.

Luther (2010–2019)

would be perfect but..
7 October 2022
Each season, there is a cop or a team dedicated to bring Luther down. They waste so much time, money and effort on this. It is like they are tripping on their own show. I get it, it add more tension... will they get him? But I really much rather have more focus on the real murderer. Luther get the job done, he catched bad guys. But no, they MUST stop him because he doesnt follow the rules. They really got and hard on on the fact they will eventually dig enough dirt on Luther.... but why?? It stain the real investigation and force an other intrigue. It really drag the show down. I love Edris Elba. Each second with him on screen is a blast. But stop with those jealous colleagues !

When comedy become parody
29 September 2022
Ragnarok was funny, yet still manage to keep a serious tone when it needed to be. Thor was still a super hero. Yhea, we made fun of him but never to the point where we stop caring. Here, he stopped beeing funny and acted like a dumb idiot desperately beg for our laugh. This movie should have been called "Yet another super hero movie".

DC , with the last batman is all the opposite. Too serious, too dark, that we made fun of it for it. Here, it is so colorfull, so idiotic, we dont have any ground to stand on. The story became secondary to the joke. Christian Bale is trying is best to add tension to a movie that doesnt take anything seriously. Every scene he is in feel like an other movie. Once Thor take back the screen, we are back to plug the next funny joke.

Yes, it is a super hero, flying trough the air with his mighty hammer... axe... And no, we shouldnt take it too seriously. Ragnarok manage to walk that line almost perfectly. The director took that as a blessing and went full parody resulting in this big farce of a movie.

This one is the worst of the p4 so far.

This show scream corporate writing
26 September 2022
There is slow burn and there is Rings of Power. We are well into the serie now and we are yet to see something happening other than setup. Episodes finishes with some epic orchestra and chorus while 3 ships sails away and nothing really happened. Every scene is met with a score that should underline a grand adventure and it just contrast so much with what we are seeing on screen. Yes it is gorgeous. Numenor, is splendid... But I fail to see the purpose of it.

Galadriel continue to be insufferable impeteus brat. Every scenes she is in, it is her staring down, again with a dramatic score. They pulled a Marie sue even worse than Rey, because she constantly brag about it. And she is suppose to be the older one.

She teaches Numenor soldier how to killed an Orc... Arent they suppose to be the best of the best? She take 5 of them at once without sweat ! Hey, corporates, women can struggle too, the can self-doubt, they can be desperate !

We have yet to meet our antagonist, or did we? The plot is so well shrouded in mystery, that we loose focus of what or who we are suppose to care for...

Give us meat!!.. all we got here is dry bones... gorgeous dry bones, but still dry as f@#$. I stopped caring and waiting for episode to come. I remembered sunday that an episode dropped 2 days before. LotR has become a non-event... how?

This show scream corporate writing. Great ideas are killed in the eggs while we checked all the boxes to craft an uninspiring story.

The only and surprising upside is Durin and Elrond. While nothing really happen there also, their scenes are funny and received better writing.

With ep 6, we should have our first battle... but I fear it will be a fast skirmish and fleeing villagers.

Andor (2022– )

Such a welcome addition
22 September 2022
For me, Obi wan was a huge let down with more focus on nostalgia bait than logic. The writing was lazy, character out of place and some cringe moments. The mandalorian is good, but not great. There are few episode who truly shine and a lot than doesnt add anything but to fill the gap between important moment. Bobba fett just fell flat and was boring. They manage to take the most badass character and make him a snooze fest. Here, with Andor, we take the time to tell a story. The gritty, westernish tone, the POV of a recluse planet under the empire jurisdiction is very welcome. The slow and palpable rebellion that start to flourish. At the center of it all, we have Cassian, our 'hero' who is selfish, full of hatred ans self doubts. Such a welcome character in the star wars universe, where every hero is a Marie Sue, selfless, benevolent. The tone alone is for adult. And maybe because I am one (38 and counting), I immediately grip to that with all my might. The first 3 episodes were awesome and i hope that they will keep this level of quality. For now, i am just glad we are way passed the sequel trilogy genre and the obiwan cringe fest action scene. That is the Star wars show we are looking for. Please continue.
