The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Hmmmm
Only on ep 2- but what bothered me is this- I had hoped the daughter- eaten- by- serial- killer- wasn't real- as frankly it's ludicrous that a little girl would be taken to a jail and in a room with a cannibal. But apparently not.... It's a real shame it's as ridiculous as this as I really liked it till then. Will update if my opinion changes.... UPDATE Now on ep 7... I've read since several times that this is supposed to be a satire on this kind of genre, but if it is, it's poorly executed as it simply isn't silly enough to feel that way. It's as if it doesn't know which way to go- serious, or satire? Having said that, it's at least good enough to keep me watching....
Sherlock (2010)
Fantastic-till series 3
Leaving out the obvious Lefty bias of this show ("Daily Mail" the nasty cow female detective who hates Sherlock whispers to Dec.Lestrade during a press conference) this WAS a great show. Funny, clever, witty, well written. Then the makers got too big for their boots. And ruined it. The Victorian Christmas Special is a prime example. Instead of letting it be a fabulous stand alone episode, they had to ruin it by making awful in-jokes, and making the whole thing a dream. Unoriginal to say the least.
I, Tonya (2017)
Such a great film
I'd never heard about this before. Had no idea what to expect, and as very pleasantly surprised. This is a funny, sharp film, with great editing, and great characters. I really felt for Tonya, despite her wrongs. This once s a very underrated film that deserves more praise than it gets.
French and Saunders: Go to the Movies (1995)
Hilarious!
I'm astonished at the poor reviews here. I first saw this when it was aired on the BBC. As a film geek I found this so funny! F and S are brilliant at laughing at Aliens, Thelma and Louise and Silence of the Lambs- All hilarious!! This is a must see for any film geek and/or comedy fan, and never gets old- find your sense of humour the rest of you!!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Love-apart from the irritating stereotypical "English" Giles
I do love Buffy. I do. But as a Brit, I must protest over the ridiculous Hugh-Grant-in-Four-Weddings-Giles. Eugh. Just AWFUL. American producers love to have these ridiculous British stereotypes in US film and TV. Seriously get rid of them.
Black Sails (2014)
Rather too Americanised
Rather over American- ridiculous white teeth, constant "sked-ules" instead of the English "Shed-lies" but it seems from the first ep like good fun, if rather brain dead good fun. Perhaps I'll get into it more as it goes on but it's rather empty for me at present
Darkest Hour (2017)
Wonderful
Fantastic film-quite why it only got 7 stars here I don't know. Perhaps from people who don't enjoy dialogue based films. This is however a crackingly brilliant dialogue based film which in my eyes deserves 10/10!
Gary Oldman is fantastic as Churchill. Just outstanding. His speeches made me smile with joy, and his occasional outbursts of temper made me chuckle The rest of the cast are equally fabulous and it made me smile , laugh and feel pride as well- pride sadly lacking in this country these days.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Great fun
So many misery guts reviewing this! Whinging about the "poor acting" and how it's "no masterpiece"! The acting is fine by me- I really like the leads but everyone performs well. As for it not being a masterpiece, no. It's no masterpiece. But it is great fun. And Wonderwoman is a great character-ignore James Cameron's ridiculous virtue signalling remark about her being too attractive- what about handsome heroes like James Bond?? She is a great strong character and it is a good fun film.
Y tu mamá también (2001)
Surprised me
My colleague lent me this, having recommended it. Since he is a fellow film geek with good taste like me, I trusted him that this would be a good film. It took me a while to get in to, but when it did, it surprised me with it's poignancy. It is more than a sexy road trip film, and I had trouble stopping myself thinking about it after. To say it plucks at your heart strings is an understatement. A really thoughtful, intelligent and beautifully shot film which will also make you want a long hug. Or chocolate if a hug isn't available.
Spectre (2015)
Another brilliant Bond film
I rarely take the time to write film reviews, but was so annoyed by the low ratings a load of muppets on here had given this film that I felt I had to write one praising it. Some idiot reviewers have said it was 'the most boring action film ever'! - were they watching the same film?? Or that they had 'fallen asleep'. Clearly these fools can't watch anything that doesn't have an explosion every ten seconds in it. There's nothing wrong, believe it or not, in a bit of dialogue!! I wasn't bored for a second. I liked the hints of Bonds' background- another thing which oddly offended some- his backstory was much more prominent in Skyfall, and there was nothing wrong with that then or in this film. It added to Bonds' character. I found this film to be as exciting and well done as Skyfall with nice humorous touches and nail biting action scenes. Don't listen to the muppets with attention deficit disorders, this is a fab film.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Moving, inspiring and heart breaking
I knew a little about the code breakers at Bletchley Park, having read 'Station X' by Michael Smith a long time ago. Alan Turing's name was familiar, but I knew little about him outside of the story of the code breakers, and it was just happening to hear the main theme on 'Classic FM' that actually made me really want to see this on cinema, rather than wait for it to come on DVD! There are those complaining about it not being 'accurate'- its not a biography for heaven's sake. It is a film, so yes, not all of it will absolutely be true to life. Ignore those moaners! This is a beautifully made, heartfelt film, with an outstanding performance by the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch in particular deserves praise for his performance. If he doesn't get a BAFTA/Oscar for his wonderful portrayal of the tortured genius Alan Turing, then I'll be very surprised. Even the usually bland Keira Knightley does well, giving the first credible performance of her career.
This is a film in which I hope will make more people aware of, and interested in, the Bletchley Park code breakers. The dreadful 'U571' tried to make out the Americans captured Enigma and not the British, which was a deliberate inaccuracy that should not have been allowed.(That is the kind of inaccuracy that DOES matter, as it was rewriting a vital piece of history. Not on.) It is good to see the British code breakers getting the credit they deserve in The Imitation Game.
This is a rare film for me, in which I found it very hard to shake off after seeing it. I couldn't concentrate on anything, but had to sit there thinking about it and crying!-and you'll know why if you go and see it, which I heartily recommend you do.
