Nice "new" story to the World War II movies
I really love when movies can hit on different angles on what has been a story told over and over again. World War II was a truly unique and chaotic time where many stories come out of, but so many movies of the same general stories are hashed out, making movies of this era tough to sift through. Only a handful can stand out.
This movie can fit into that category. Although, it is rather long, and it seemed as though towards the end, the director realized he was reaching the 2-hour mark and hurried things up.
The torment of the Jews needing to hide in filth to stay alive, the mental struggles they went to and the affects the sewer inspector had on so many lives, both good and bad are so profound. It's really a movie worth watching, especially if you're a World War II movie buff. It is one you'll remember.
One thing that did bug me was the amount of sex had in the movie. I get it, people had sex. Nothing to worry about. But it bothered me that people would really have sex in a sewer, covered in feces. Maybe they did, who knows, but some of the sex scenes were rather unneeded.
That and the 2-hour length knocked this movie back a few stars. Also, since I only speak English, differentiating between the East European languages was basically impossible. But, that wasn't a big player in the movie.
One Nation Under Dog (2012)
Must see for the ignorant...
This documentary gets an 8/10 for me because of the general message inside it that needs to be spread. The realistic side to shelters and what happens when you dump your dog.
However, many downfalls are in this film that I did not like. Instead of speaking of responsible dog ownership, it fell back on the ole just spay and neuter your pets campaign. Which, in hindsight, works for the ignorant viewer, but if you're making a professional film, put some thought into it.
The content was also a bit...mismatched. The beginning follows bite cases around the same dog and its owner, then jumps to a very short blip about a wealthy couple cloning their dog and then jumps to the shelter/rescue/euthanasia bit. What is their main goal here? They were all over the board with content. It was quite hard to understand what the main message was. So, as a whole piece, it's quite ugly.
But the general message that shelter dogs are in danger and the problem is not going away as things sit now is a powerful one that needs to be spread, regardless of production value. The sad thing is, being an HBO flick, the people who need to see this the most will never see it.
Elle s'appelait Sarah (2010)
Great movie, disappointing ending
I really love world war II movies. And when I'm in the mood for a moving piece, holocaust films really ground me to how wonderful a life we have today.
I've seen hundreds of world war II films, done tons of research on the era, read lots of books, and I had never even heard of the event in France that this movie based itself on. It was quite a great thing to experience such a unique story. Something different from all the other movies of the same genre (and a welcome relief from all of these darn superhero movies nowadays).
The story is unique, and that in and of itself is worth knowing. I loved it. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I kept wondering about this and that. How was this going to wrap up?
But I was a bit disappointed at the end. The general theme of this being a movie of the event that happened in France fades away and you are now focused on the journalist. The movie just seems to go on too long and just dives into the unknown with characters we're not really familiar with.
The ending was sudden. And I think the idea was good, but was not executed the best. It was playing around the emotions of the son, who we don't really get to know that well. It was just...off.
All in all, it's a good movie to watch. I would suggest it. But don't expect to be watching another holocaust movie. The holocaust scenes end about half way through. The rest is set in the modern day and centers around the journalist trying to find out about the little girl.
