Hwangsanbul (2003)
A mild case of schizophrenia.
Just saw the movie and felt like I needed the Cliff Notes to the story. My cousin recommended the movie to me when I was in Seoul and I picked it up. He claimed it was a comedy and assured me that I'd enjoy it.
I did. The first half of it.
The comedy (when apparent) is great. The punch lines and acting are spot on and you will bust a gut. However, in the middle of the film, the picture abruptly shifts gears and somehow transforms itself into a very serious drama.
The transition is very jarring and leaves a very big hole to fill in which the movie unfortunately does nothing to remedy. Furthermore, it ends somewhat mysteriously and it left me (and my friends) w/ a very empty feeling.
Like previous viewers had previously mentioned - first half = funny. Second half = serious and somewhat flat. End = huh?

I liked it but...
I liked it and agree w/ everyone who says that it is a beautiful film to look at and yes, it does dig its hooks into you at the beginning and yes, it's superbly executed and yes, the acting is very good but when the movie tries to pay itself back in the end, I couldn't help but feel completely uninterested. Maybe it was the fact that movie seemed way cooler than the audience and made no bones of hiding this arrogance. Maybe it was just the fact that it knew it had a secret to tell and when it finally told you - you were left saying, "that's it?!".
Maybe I'm too desensitized to all of this but honestly, if you're going to pay off, pay off big. Especially if you've kept me hanging on for that long.

The dialogue kills me.
When I was in Seoul, my cousin recommended this to me and pointed out that it was a "buddy comedy". I wasn't expecting much but found myself laughing riotously.
The characters are all crazy. They fit right in an anime series somewhere with their odd, yet, approachable quirks. The plot is rather straight forward which makes this movie so twisted because of the goofy characters. The dialogue kills me. They're all mad. Each and every one of them.
This is a comedy so you'll have to suspend your belief at times otherwise you'll overanalyze and probably miss the joke, altogether. I won't get too ahead of myself and give away anything but if you're looking to have a laugh and you're ok with dealing with a bunch of goofballs running, driving, digging mad across your screen, this one should do the trick.
