Laurent Garnier: Off the Record (2021)
Embaressing self absorbed rubbish
I was looking forward to seeing some a biopic of LG having been a fan since the early days of techno but... despite interesting appearances by well known DJs (Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin etc.) this is generally a self congratulatory w@nkfest with no real structure, story or anything engaging about a truly talented artist.
He seems like a nice guy but so what? Don't waste your time watching this trash. What a shame as there are very few documentaries about techno.
Rogue Male (1976)
Good story let down by cinematography, and one too many soppy cut-tos
The story is good, but the whole thing is let down by some truly appalling camera work/lighting that makes the whole thing look cheap as chips. Some decent, if slightly wooden, acting from O'Toole, upstaged by Sim.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Difficult to absorb.
It's long but beautiful. Tarantino is the best director certainly of the last 25 years.
However... We're still left with an overlong and let's face it, mostly dull movie. It's been troubling me why I don't like it and I finally worked out why - it's the whole Sharon Tate arc of the plot. If you removed EVERYTHING to do with her arc, we're left with an almost genius movie. Don't get me wrong, I think Margot Robbie is excellent, but if we'd just heard her voice right at the end... that would have been a perfect ending. And not to mention half an hour shorter.
