Chamak (2023)
All that glitters is sometimes Gold
The acting and plot are quite good, though a bit slow at places. You have to give it some time before the series hits its stride. As mentioned in the other reviews, Manoj Pahwa is amazing. Karmavir Singh Cheema as the protagonist does a good job as well.
It is the music that elevates this series to an altogether different level. The makers have not spared any expense when it comes to the music. Popular Bollywood singers have been roped in and they have done a great job. Special mention to the song - Khairaat. Went ahead and downloaded the songs of a series after TVF Aspirants (S1).
Would definitely love a season 2 of this series.
Chintu Ka Birthday (2020)
Might be low on budget, but not on heart!!
This movie will surprise you. And pleasantly so.
Most, if not all, the characters are doing an amazing job. The small kid is a great find. Don't recollect seeing him in any other roles. Finally, something worthy for Vinay Pathak. These are the kinds of roles he deserves. Tillotama Shome and Seema Pahwa are good as well. The sister manages to make an impact in the small time she has.
The movie does a great job in capturing many different vibes just perfectly. The pre-birthday planning and decorations reminded me of my childhood. The household squabbles as well, are shown in a believable light.
I like how the American actors chosen are not over the top, or one-note characters, as is usually the case in such movies. And they have been given ample screen-time to give them some semblance of an arc.
Go watch it if you haven't. And like the other reviewers, it will make you sad for the movie itself- 'Chintu Ka birthday' deserved a wide cinema release.
Paatal Lok (2020)
Of Angels and Demons
Just kidding. No angels here. This is Paatal Lok we are talking about.
While most crime shows dissect crimes once they've occurred, this one's about a plan foiled in its execution. The police work here is reminiscent of the stellar work done by Delhi police in Delhi Crime.
Kudos to the casting director to have chosen such a fine ensemble of actors (good see you Gul Panag). Jaideep Ahlawat is in especially fine form here. The show tries to provide back stories to both the good guys as well as the bad guys.
Themes of casteism and secularism are also discussed, in subtle and not so subtle ways. Overall, a pretty good watch.
The Half of It (2020)
Calling it a love story isn't 'The Half of It'
I went into the movie liking the trailer and expecting a sweet love story. But the movie exceeded my expectations. The actors were well cast and the writing was sharp. The movie will make you laugh and maybe make you cry as well. It did both for me.
PS - Someone asked the meaning of the last 10s. He's running behind her train like what was shown in one of the earlier scenes of the movie when they're watching a (Bollywood) movie in her house. Where he finds it cute and she calls the guy a moron. Which is what she calls him in the end. Btw, this running behind the train is a common scene in many a Bollywood flick.
