Role Play (2024)
Entertaining and fun
Role Play follows the story of an undercover assassin for hire whose life takes an unexpected turn after she and her mild-mannered husband go on date-night in the city.
While the plot may not be the most believable, the film is funny and entertaining.
This is a great choice if you're struggling to find something on TV and looking for an easy-to-watch movie without the need for deep thinking or analysis.
"Roleplay" may not break any new ground and I'm not convinced that I entirely bought Cuoco and David O as a couple, but the film's not that deep. David O is funny as the hapless husband and Cuoco is entertaining as a soccer mom/spy.
The scenes with Bill Nighy are particularly good.
Past Lives (2023)
Slow paced and 1/2 hour too long.
I was not at all interested in this film after watching the trailers but imdb viewers gave it 8 stars. (Big mistake.)
The film was... fine. The exploration of their relationship and feelings, and her husband's, was particularly good. For me, the ending was surprising and not what I expected.
But, my god, this movie was slow and indulgent and really could have been cut down by at least 30 minutes.
I actually nodded off in the cinema, was fidgety, and kept checking the time.
Having said that, if I did not watch this in a cinema, I probably would have given up.
Ps: They were both quite cute.
The Gardener (2021)
Pretty bad
I finished the movie so I gave it an extra star but:
- the plot was terrible;
- the fight scenes were lame;
- the family (and the maid) was unlikeable; and
- the bad guys were stupid; and
- there was lots of unnecessary screaming.
Reacher (2022)
Great adaptation
Watched the series in 24 hours and the time passed effortlessly. Six episodes in a row and two the next morning.
True to the book.
Easy to believe this guy is Reacher (unlike that other guy ;)
Can't wait for Season 2!
From Darkness (2015)
Watchable crime mini series
Entertaining but not spectacular.
Unbelievable in parts. A few enjoyable twists. Villians are suitably deranged. Only 4 one-hour episodes making it easy to binge.
The people rating this less than a 3 are just being ridiculous and dramatic. I've given it a 6 as that's as far as I'm prepared to go but it's more of a 5.
(Also, i quite liked the ending, which was perversely satisfying.)
Namaste Wahala (2021)
Watchable
The film has its moments and the bones to be a good romcom.
The attempt to address racism and to merge Bolly- and Nollywood was commendable but the acting, the dialogue, the storyline all could have been slicker.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Ending was a letdown
Film had potential but the plot flaws and HEA ending leave you scratching your head.
Hjem til jul (2019)
Sad commentary on life
Johanna is pressured by absolutely everyone to couple up, breed, and live the same dull life as every one else.
The least they could do is get some farm animals or baubles in exchange for their daughter.
Bombshell (2019)
A surprise treat!
This was a good film!
Fundamentally, this a film about sexual harassment against the backdrop of Fox News and the 2016 election.
The film should be required viewing for its portrayal of what women go through and what they're up against (in a toxic workplace, from enablers, and when coming out and fighting back).
However, the Fox newsroom backdrop made this film riveting.
Charlize Theron's gave a brilliant performance.
Ironically, Megyn Kelly comes off looking like a verifiable hero. But it was Gretchen Carlson's real life move that was simply genius!
Time Trap (2017)
Who isn't stupid in this film?
The plot's not bad but the stupidity of almost every single character will have you screaming at the TV.
Forbidden Secrets (2005)
Overly dramatic and tedious
Unsympathetic character. Exercises poor judgment throughout. Spends most of the film with her head in the sand - reacts to everything by either refusing to take action or acting hysterically. Behaves more like a 7 year old than an adult.
Film tries to create mystery by making you suspect at least 5 possible villians.
Annie (2014)
Average, enjoyable
I read the reviews here before I watched this film and I knew something was up.
This film is certainly not a 1 and it's certainly not a 10. I also have no idea what the original film has to do with how many stars you give this film.
The film's easy to watch. A bit cheesy in bits.
Barry (2016)
The story of a young mixed-raced man trying to find his place in early 1980s New York
The movie is an interesting look at the President's early life. We've come to expect the current President to be cool and collected and this movie looks at the anxieties and insecurities that he would have faced at that time.
I would recommend this movie to a person interested in human behaviour. The film is, at its heart, the study of a young mixed-raced man trying to find his place in early 1980s New York but it also interesting as Obama's personal story, particularly his slightly disapproving view of his mother and his conflicted feelings about his absent father.
The lead actor Terrell does a great and convincing job as the young Obama. However, the film lacks something special and leaves you with the lingering feeling that there's another installment to be watched.
Hyde Park on Hudson (2012)
Disjointed with unsympathetic characters
The film is a disjointed combination of two stories and film genres.
The "first film" is a comedy about the visit of King George VI and his wife Elizabeth, which is absolutely hilarious but undeveloped since it has to share time with the other dreadful and depressing story.
The "second film", in which few characters are likable, is a uneasy film about a great American president who, despite his quite well-known disability, we are led to believe is a raging sex machine with 3 loyal mistresses.
The film centres around the seduction of the 3d mistress, played by a frumpy Laura Linney. The seduction scenes are uncomfortable and makes one feel like a sleazy voyeurist.
The film tries to character assassinate every historical character in it and is a feminist nightmare with Laura Linney's Daisy hanging around waiting for stolen moments with the disabled philander and Eleanor Roosevelt reduced to the cuckolded spouse, who is prone to belligerent outbursts, but who is also inexplicably loyal. (Although Eleanor does have the decency to be the only woman in his life who won't sleep with FDR - although it's unclear why - whether she's the only woman in his life resistant to his inexplicable charm and not prepared to put up with the cheating, or if it's because she is (as hinted at) a lesbian.)
Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth steals the show with a performance out of place with the rest of this mediocre film.
