V/H/S/99 (2022)
Best V/H/S Since V/H/S/2
Although not as good as the first 2 (blame Gareth Evans and Daniel Bruckner for making insanely good segments), this is the most I've enjoyed a V/H/S film since them. I personally found Viral to be terrible, and 94 was a mixed bag and had an awful overarching story.
To my surprise, they finally got rid of the overarching story part of the film, hooray! Only took them 5 films.
Segment 1 - Shredding (aka the band one)
Probably my least favourite segment of the 5. Wasn't overly impressed with the visuals, and found the shaky cam annoying. Was slightly worried when this was the first one, since I'm sure these films usually start strong. 4/10
Segment 2 - Suicide Bid (aka coffin one)
An improvement on the first segment, with the box reveal and aftermath being well done and creepy. Impressively filmed as well. Again though I wasn't very impressed with the makeup visuals. 6/10
Segment 3 - Ozzy's Dungeon (aka gameshow one)
I was extra worried after the first two segments being underwhelming, but this segment was a large improvement. Was very disgusting, but entertaining. 8/10
Segment 4 - The Gawkers (aka snakes one)
Not my favourite segment, but the reveal was enjoyable, although the teenagers were all very unlikeable so didn't provide too much entertaining viewing until the end. 5/10
Segment 5 - To Hell and Back (aka Mabel one)
Easily the best segment. This segment is what boosts this movie in quality above Viral and 94. Great use of visuals and a great idea for a short story premise. Acting was great too. Really impressed by the actress who played Mabel who was also in Deadstream. Hope she collabs with the directors again. I would probably say only Safe Haven and Amateur Night would top this in the franchise. 9/10.
Above 5 average at 6.4/10, but I'll round up because I'm just happy they didn't do another overarching story. Bring on next years.
Love Island: Episode 29 (2021)
Oscar Worthy
Absolute masterpiece. Up there with the season 5 casa amor.
Lillie deserves an academy award for her performance. Liam, although he has provided the drama, absolutely dropped the ball. Should have just brought Lillie back, now he's getting dumped at the next decoupling.
Also, poor Teddy. Toby has also brought the drama, fair play. Plus next episode of Kaz v Tyler looks incredible.
10/10
Destiny's Chaldish would be proud.
Death Note (2017)
People need to calm down
As I write this review, the movie holds a 4.8/10. I feel inclined to write this review as I feel as though people need to stop throwing out 1/10 reviews, as that would suggest that this film is broken and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, which is simply not the case. If I had to give this film an exact score, I would give it a 6.5/10, as although I am sticking up for it, I can admit that it does have a fair amount of flaws.
Also, before I go into positive and negatives, I would like to also point out that I have seen the anime TV series, which although I enjoyed it, I believe that it is also has its flaws (e.g. so much unnecessary exposition, loses a lot of steam when it jumps forward in time) and that fans need to stop holding it up as some untouchable 10/10 TV series.
Things that I believe were done well: -The cinematographer and visuals were all well done, which you would have expected given the budget -Ryuk looked and sounded great. I've seen complaints about how he is underused, but I believe that because he was kept quite minimal, the creepiness surrounding his character remained throughout -L. The performance from Lakeith Stanfield was great, just as good as he was in Get Out -Some scenes were very well done, for example, the falling scene (shown in the trailer) and the end reveal. -The fact they didn't just copy the anime, and tried to make it their own thing.
Also, the concept of the Death Note is amazing, although can't obviously give this movie credit for that, it just makes the movie not a 1/10 as they have this clever concept to work with and they would have to really mess up to no longer make it a clever concept, which they didn't.
Things that I believe were OK: -The performance of Nat Wolff as Light. I believe he played his role...fine. Considering the budget, maybe they could have got someone better. But he did not ruin the movie (although wasn't the biggest fan of his over-the-top laugh, did not think that fit live-action very well) -The music. I really liked the music, but I didn't always think it fit the moment -The relationship between Light and Mia. They were OK together, just could have had a bit more time to flesh out their relationship a bit more
Things I believe could have been better: -The character of Mia. I think the acting was fine, but the character was pretty all over the place, changing personality to fit the situation -The montage sequence when he starts his killing and the response of the police/L. Shouldn't have been a quick montage -The run time. The movie should have been at least 2 hours, and should have fleshed out characters more, particular that of Mia -Light is way too trusting of Mia way too quickly -We could have found out more about the character of Ryuk
Nitpick: -The teacher at the start being overly horrible. Reminded me of the start of Fant4stic Four when the teacher is just being a savage to Reed when he's a kid...just why
If you didn't enjoy this movie, fair enough, however, it's not 1/10 Birdemic/Emoji Movie level of bad.
Devil's Due (2014)
Typical January horror movie failure
Before I went into the movie I knew that this film had a score of 4.8, so I chose to lower my expectations and hope that there would be some enjoyable moments, I have never been so wrong.
I'll start off with the positives...the two main characters, Zach and Sam, are both reasonably well played by Allison Miller and Zach Gilford. That is the only positive in the whole movie. The movie is very cliché and has no originality to it. I have no idea why someone would fund the making of this movie, due to the fact that the script was probably written in 10 minutes.
The film overall was boring, and some scenes were just embarrassing to watch, such as the scene in the forest and the scene (which you probably seen in the trailer) where there is a large movement in Sam's stomach.
I have seen a lot of comparisons to Paranormal Activity, which are known for building the atmosphere for a climatic ending, Devil's Due fails at this as the ending feels rushed and is over very quickly. (SPOILER ALERT) It then closes to a couple in France, who are then picked up by the same cab driver who took Sam and Zach to the party which leads to the ritual. I have no idea who he is, or who any of the other people on his side are. This means we learn nothing about why they do what they do. (SPOILER END)
This film is up there as one of the worst films I have ever seen; it is unoriginal and not scary in the slightest. As a large fan of the genre, I have been left disappointed, and I'd like to apologise to movie lovers for giving money to the creators as they will probably go on to make an horrendous sequel.
