Just Go with It (2011)
Worth a look, but don't expect much
I have noticed a common trend with Adam Sandler in his latest string of family flicks. Gone are the fart joke comedies in favour of the more serious but still silly family orientated roles.
The whole script gives me a headache just thinking about it. A Plastic surgeon creates a web of deceit, involving his assistant, her children and friend to impress a young woman who he thinks is the one. The whole concept is ridiculous and Sandler finds himself digging out hole after hole to cover all his lies.
It is the same brand of humour and old faithful guest appearances that Sandler is known for. I failed to see any original jokes or comedy that has not been done in his movies before. I did get a giggle at a subtle jibe at Heidi Montag, who had a guest appearance as a partygoer, in a room full of people who had become disfigured from overdoing it on cosmetic surgery.
Then the movie gets corny and Sandler delivers his traditional happy ending where everyone involved comes out smiling.
The movie is OK; there is something familiar and oddly comforting about Sandler movies for me, so I always endeavour to see them. This is a light comedy not to be taken seriously at all, leave your brain at the door.
The Third Wish (2005)
Your eyes and brain will need bleaching
I watched this movie with my eight year old son who thought the movie sounded awesome from the description. What a waste of a DVD rental. Half way through this movie, we switched it off. I believe my sons exact words were "Mum this movie is lame, I hate it".
Maggie Malone was one of the worst characters in cinematic history; I found not one part of her endearing. The movie tries hard to make her seem kind, optimistic and well liked. Her landlord and boss seemingly accept the fact that she is not paying her rent and turns up late for work every day, that is if she does turn up for work. In fact her landlord offers her a meal after telling her she is months behind in her rent.
If you have seen the movie Pretty Woman then this movie has pretty much ripped off many of the scenes. As one reviewer mentions, there is one particular part where she makes reference to Pretty Woman, and then proceeds to mirror the scene in the b grade style that reeks throughout this movie.
We constantly hear throughout the early stages of the movie that she does not believe in love. However, it does not take her long to start making doe eyes at the lawyer, hired to help her spend her inheritance. One scene she takes the office bound Lawyer on a bike ride, once again the similarities of Pretty Woman appearing in this unoriginal script. I can't believe this movie was even made. I cringe as I relive the scenes, I wish there was a way where I could forget it.
Country Strong (2010)
It's tough battling personal demons in the public eye.
I enjoyed the simplicity of this movie. The script was short and sweet with no over the top twist and turns. The characters were likable and well played. Toward the end I even found myself empathizing with Kelly's husband who is mostly portrayed as her uncaring career driven manager.
The music was not overplayed and the songs were enjoyable, Gwyneth has an amazing voice and so did the rest of the singing cast. The movie truly captured the country music spirit and the dedicated fan base and singers that follow the music.
Kelly had a very public battle fighting her personal demons and we witness her celebrity life being that of headache, loneliness and shame. She finds comfort in the arms of Bo which sedates the pain of her failing marriage, emotional problems, alcohol addiction and constant negative media attention.
I would recommend this movie, it's not a Hollywood blockbuster, but it is certainly a quality flick.
