Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024)
A tired theme but worth a watch
This is Bhansalis tried and tested subject but it felt a bit tired watching the same genre again. But you can not escape the sets, the details, the fantasy world he has created as we can only imagine what it must have been like.
Some chatacters are quite weeak, but a lot of them have done justice to their roles. You do feel that initial contempt due to the over familiarity of the subject matter but soon the characters, sets and the story grows on you.
Rather than focussing more on the tawaifs' world, the story could have been more about the struggles of getting the independence from the british with the rich sets as a backdrop.
The Great Indian Murder (2022)
Gripping yet very slow in parts
It was engaging from the start. But lost its momentum abt 4th ep onwards till the 8th.
Too lengthy exploration of suspects and their mundane associations, i guess the director was trying to build their profiles but its such a drag.
Pratik Gandhi shd have had more screen time.
Richa Chadha i must say attempts to talk like a tough cop but ends up sounding like a nice lady next door, sorry but not a big fan of her acting.
The Big Bull (2021)
Felt rushed
Its hard not to compare this movie with the scam 92 series shich was phenomenal. There was some silly 80s bollywood movies reminders eg crazy villain style laughters, some kadar khan style stupid dialogues etc. But AB jnr inspite of being a very good actor somehow cant pull it off, a bit unlucky. I put it on the writers and the director or even Mr Devgan.
Bombay Begums (2021)
Too shalow
Only watched two ep so far but i m finding that it is not very well written and directed and this impacts the acting. Firstly the narration by thecyoung girl is annoying and a little distracting.
The boradroom talks are very shallow, there is no depth.
If constant barrage of F words and sex scenes is empowering for the ladies then it is a shame unless this is the OTT techtic to lure the audience as i can see there is a pattern here.
Also just when you start liking some characters or feel sympathy they are shown in a different, rather darker, light which is confusing.
The Girl on the Train (2021)
Writer director producer let it down
Very poorly written whodunit. Parineeti is normally a good actor but in this the story and direction let her down. There is no need for an overseas backdrop. In fact it makes the film look empty at times. The sets look fake. The events are hard to believe. The twists and turns are a bit ott. The ending is cringe worthy.
Wake N Bake by Rohan Joshi (2020)
Very witty
Self deprecating and sarcastic humour. Comedy with some real life observations that make you think. Very well put together.
Don't Tell Amma by Sumukhi Suresh (2019)
Work on the content
So bad....focus less on genitals and more on the content
Metro Park (2019)
Simple and nostalgic
Warching s2 now.
I like this show as it is simple but it also reminds me of the shows i used to watch in the 80s - like, yeh jo hai zindagi.
Ranvir shorey and Purbi joshi are very good actors.
At times it does become the usual gujju styled repetative comedy but on the whole its a good watch and shows you the daily grind of the gujjus, at least some, in USA.
The White Tiger (2021)
Cud have been slightly better in hindi
In order to appease the international audience, the movie is mostly dubbed in english, something that does not sit well given the main leads background and what he does for a living. Wud have been much more authentic if it was in hindi.
The first hour is pretty mundane. The story only picks up after the accident.
In the end with so much philosophical / pragmatic narration, i was confused about what the overall msg was. The direction lacked and didnt pack any punches.
Jestination Unknown (2019)
Not that funny
Vir Das jokes so matter of factly that at times he tries to prove a point logically and thinks it will be funny but more often than not it is not. Also, dont do that smug face when u think u have said something very intelligent (in a joke) and u r looking for an acknowledgement. Also adding f words everywhere DOES NOT MAKE IT FUNNY - this comment is for all indian standups.
Four stars for visiting small indian cities which u wud not get to know abt otherwise.
