El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Your definitely in for a treat
I did expect more of the film to be in a fantasy universe (geuss its about 50/50), but it just blew me away, the mix of realism and fantasy was blended perfectly, the two sides of the storie are so good separately that its almost scary and combined even better. This is a defenent top 10 movie of all time (in my eyes anyways) At times it makes me think of something Takashi Miike could have made. Zebraman, hobgoblins and the great wall, audition and several other of his movies has this dream/fiction/reality theme going that reminds me a bit, but Pans labyrinth just seems to have a whole lot more work behind it than (I make 5 movies every year) Miike usually does. Also Hayao Miyazaki comes to mind with the colorful and almost magical storytelling, hell parts of it even made me think of the master him self Terry Gilliam. The monsters are awesome, and even though the pale man is freaky and scary as hell, he is no match for the truly utterly nasty monster "captain evil". In a really solid 2006 when it comes to movies I would personally have to put this outing on top as the best of the year.
Git (2004)
One of the rare feel good movies.
Just came home after seeing this movie at the night film festival in Copenhagen, and I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. Git is a slow paced movie with gorgeous visuals and little talk, this is nothing new from South Corean movies. (Kim Ki-duk does this as well and with much brilliance, though his movies mostly differ from this by being harsh as hell.) Unlike most other good Corean movies or rather movies in general, this movie is both naive, has a feel good vibe and is good... This reviewer can only think of a handful really good movies with these elements. Anyways if you have good patience, enjoys flicks that slowly grows om you, and don't mind that a few elements are heavily inspired by Kim Ki-duk and my sassy girl then this will be a good choice.
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
well it was a no. 2 movie
This movie was complete rubbish... or at least i didn't like it much. oceans eleven was a fairly good movie for a Sunday where your hungover and not really in the mood for anything other than just chilling and throwing your brain out the window. This one was also a Sunday movie but instead for making you forget that your hungover you are just bored senseless..... why am i so generous then ?!?!? 5 out of 10 is a lot for a poorly directed movie with boring jokes, lag of good plot and acting.... well would have given it 3 but the reference to the brilliant millers crossing gives it a notch and the fact that its the best scene in millers gives it yet another notch. But hey what did I expect its both a sonderbergh movie and a number 2 in a series of hopefully no more than 2.
Lost Highway (1997)
the greatest puzzle ever.
I must admit that this movie is one of the best I've ever seen I think only Brazil can match it. The first time i saw it was back in 98 and my impression of the movie was that it was disturbing thrilling and captivating but made no sense at all, and thus didn't care that much for it and forgot about it shortly after. Last year i saw Mulholland Dr. this movie didn't make that much sense to me either, but I ended up discussing it with one of my friends and together we made us some ideas of what and how the movie could make sense, during this discussion I mentioned lost highway and we decided to see it, but only after reading about the movie on various sites. WOW I was blown away. This most weird movie suddenly made sense, it still has that creepy disturbing feeling as a any film seen from an insane killers perspective should, but its a feeling that I embrace due to the brilliance of Lynch. This movie is quite surrealistic and its quite a job trying to figure out what is real and what is just a product of Fred Madison's dreams/imagination/distorted memories, just to and further complications Lynch made this movie far from linear. To round things of. If you see this movie and is not repulsed by the grim story the dark atmosphere and enjoy "thicker movies", then read of some guidelines for understanding pay much attention to the little details and start puzzling for your self. I still am, after having seen it several times.
10/10 for a great puzzle that just keeps getting better, and includes a naked Patricia Arquette naked (any mans dream).
