Say Anything... (1989)
Good But Not As Great As It Seems
The only great thing going for this movie (and it wasn't all that great either) is the famous scene where Lloyd holds up a boombox playing a familiar song beneath Diane's bedroom window. This is a pretty good and interesting movie to see with not necessarily predictable outcomes. This just seems flat. Good, but almost average – especially in the 80′s. It sort of goes back and forth between the two unlikely-coupled main characters. But I would still recommend this to anyone because of the message it gives: never give up and go for what you believe in. Men like Lloyd Dobler are rare in this day and age. It's good to see the possibilities of hope, if you care enough. Almost inspiring.
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
Very Funny and Entertaining
Definitely something to watch again and again. This is one hilarious movie full of double-crossers and mix-ups. Jamie Lee Curtis plays the funny double-crosser named Wanda who has a weakness for men who speak a foreign language as a second language (preferably Italian); she flirts her way to answers by however means necessary despite her "boyfriend's" jealousy risking everything. Then there's the lovable Ken who loves animals but has a "little bit" of a stutter problem, and who can't seem to do anything right. Last but not least, the "mastermind" who seemingly got the short end of the stick
or did he? Great movie, I would love to buy!
Apollo 18 (2011)
This is something I'd like to forget.
God, that scared the crap out of me. What's worse is I'm not entirely sure if it's true or not. It sounds like a possibility, but it also sounds unreal; and with camera technology today, anything can be made to look real. I'll have to check that website it kept mentioning. Seriously, anything is possible. It's certainly believable that the government is covering something up; that happens all the time. They have a way of handling things, and making conspiracies sound crazy. There probably is something on the moon, but I doubt there's footage to show exactly what. There is something going on, but not necessarily extraterrestrial activity; something bad nature-related is the most likely cause. It's hard to tell; the government hides so much. People can take a bit of truth and evidence, and fill in the blanks with their own ideas. That's what the makers of this movie must have done. Also, this movie is not listed under Documentary as a genre. There could be two explanations for that: (1) This is not a documentary, but rather a work of fiction, or (2) the government or whatever prevented the people involved in making this movie from listing it as a documentary. One thing is always clear: Never fully trust the government.
There's a reason we haven't been back to the moon (have we?), and there's a reason I stay away from horror and thriller movies; they all scare the crap out of me, and the horrible visuals haunt me for a really long time (years even!). This is something I'd like to forget.
Repo Men (2010)
Another Future Prediction
Yes, another near-future sci-fi movie. This is still very worth watching even if you already get the general idea. I guess what makes the movie so great is the surprisingly understandable twists and turns. The plot is amazing really, if you think about it. This is a completely new idea of the near future. Originality helps so much; especially in movies. It keeps you interested, and thinking; but not as much thinking required for "Inception" gratefully. I just hope we never experience this. The main thing is to not forget humanity and everything it stands for. Peace to us all. Also, I couldn't help but notice the boy who played the younger Remy. Is Raff Law Jude Law's son? That would be cool.
Somewhere (2010)
Disappointing
This movie reminds me a bit of "The Tree of Life" in the "wtf is this and why?" sense. It seems to be the same situation with every movie that is written and directed by one person. It just doesn't work, apparently. Maybe this is a low-budget movie; I don't know. I'm still trying to figure out why it won an award for Best Picture. It was plot-less and almost boring. There were too many long and unnecessary shots, none of which were consistent (especially the driving scenes, as there were a lot) and most of the time irrelevant. At first, not a word was spoken – until 11 minutes into the film. The ending seemed to cut short when it shouldn't have cut at all. It should not have ended there. That's not even an ending; it's a poor attempt of a conclusion to an already pointless movie. I wonder if this was Sofia Coppola's first movie? I don't know what sucked worse: the writing or the directing. Dialog would help. It's a shame, because it could have been a great movie – or at least decent. This is an interesting and seemingly-true look into the lives of celebrities (Hollywood actors/actresses), and their relationships with their kids. The most I got out of this movie is that money doesn't buy happiness. I might have mixed feelings (which is why I won't give it a rating), but this was still a disappointing movie.
Surrogates (2009)
Clear Prediction of the Future
Out of all the robot-futuristic-world movies, this is a major eye opener. It's clearer than "The Matrix" just about. But they all have the same general message: we're going too far with technology; artificial intelligence is not the answer. The digital effects were seriously awesome in this movie. It was almost hard to tell the humans from the surrogates. I was amazed and on edge the entire action-packed movie. Great story. And I LOVE the ending. We're so lazy and ignorant. I'd buy this movie and put it on my shelf along with "Gamer" and "I, Robot". You can actually learn a lot from these movies; if only people would pay attention. But like most people say: it's just a movie. No, it's a brilliantly accurate prediction of the future.
The Wolfman (2010)
A Good Version
Another version of the age-old popular myth, with a little more spice. The opening of the movie was sort of corny, but the story made up for it. The graphics were very much realistic to a horrifying extent, as I'm sure was the idea. The movie rating might underestimate the terrifying images and blood and gore. I don't know why, but I had to see this movie; I'm glad I braved it. This movie reveals the heart in every beast, and the beast in every man. It revolves around loss, family, love and insanity. I enjoyed this story of the wolfman myth mostly because it showed more love and emotion. Most of the time, determination overrode the characters' fear; maybe not for the good of their lives, but sometimes ignorant people need to learn the hard way. It's just a shame it has to be that way.
Never Let Me Go (2010)
As Moving As Titanic
This is a truly powerful movie almost to the point of tears. I didn't know it would be so strong and dramatic, in a good way. I didn't expect to be hit with such shock and emotion all at once. And I certainly didn't expect to love it. A lot of times we go overboard with the struggles of humanity; but we're all human; we can't fix everything. But there's always the will to survive that keeps us going. Living in a unfair world, three friends try to make the best of their lives while they still have time. You can dodge and postpone, but the end is still always there. Life is much shorter for them and there's nothing really they can do about it; but that doesn't stop them from trying anyway. Their friendship is also like a love triangle. The strong emotions displayed by all three actors was phenomenal. This is as good of a story as "Titanic" in just about every way imaginable.
The Joneses (2009)
Finally Something Fun And Unique
I've never heard of this before; it's quite brilliant, and certainly better than I thought it would be. Why is it that when there finally comes a different movie, different from all the rest of the cliché crap, it doesn't get much attention? It's such a clever way to market new products, but everyone always seems to forget the nature of humans and their feelings. That's why I'm amazed at the work of actors; some slip through and get together, but the rest for the most part can have no feelings for a person, but make it look otherwise. I guess that's what you call just business - and of course things go awry. This was a very fun movie to watch. I doubt anyone would guess the ending, but that's just me maybe. I highly recommend this fun- filled movie; it just might tell you what family really is.
Extract (2009)
Funny, But A Little Dull
Mike Judge has an almost sick, yet funny mind; his work expresses such. I love how he makes fun of things and/or people with small references. This was a decent movie, but kind of dull. I felt the stress, frustration, and need for an escape of the main character. It's funny because things like that do actually happen in reality unfortunately. I was almost certain the movie would go a different way; I was even getting ready for it. Instead, I was hit with reverse-psychology I suppose. I almost wish things had been different, but it worked well. I just wish the teaser trailer hadn't been so teasing. I should probably start looking for different ways to preview a recommended movie.
The Change-Up (2011)
The Same with Creativity
Another cliché switch-bodies movie with a slightly different dialog and different actors. I personally favored Ryan Reynolds in this movie; he played a great irresponsible dummy or so. Whereas Jason Bateman always has the same characteristics in all the roles he plays; but it works. The different lifestyles of the friends works well for this movie as did "It's A Boy Girl Thing" with mixing the sexes. The best part is understanding what the person who switched lives with you actually has to deal with in life; it's another hard lesson in life, but necessary for stubborn humans who only see themselves. It's a great lesson for movies, it's just been done so many times before. This movie is worth watching because of its creativity.
Larry Crowne (2011)
Not What I Expected
At first, I didn't understand why this movie got such low ratings; then I watched it. I expected more from this movie. Again, the trailer preview was misleading. There were a couple of funny moments, but Julia Roberts was behind the majority of them; she stole the movie with her exhausted lack of care in her career as a college professor; that, and her expressions and reactions were just hilarious. She makes it lively. I also can't believe Tom Hanks directed, co-wrote, and starred as the main character in this movie. That's amazing. I think he did a good job considering the time and effort involved for all three roles. I felt Larry Crowne's every emotion. In my opinion, that's what makes a great movie.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Genuine and Fun
I very much enjoyed this romantic comedy. It's amazing how you meet people in life that become a big influence. I notice how a lot of the romantic comedies of today have been influenced by this movie. The brief true couples part reminded me of the ending of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", as well as the brief twin interviews in "Jack and Jill". I love that; it makes the movie all the more interesting and funny, but mainly entertaining. This is another one of those movies I'm ashamed of not seeing earlier in my life; I just can't believe I put such a wonderful movie off for this long. Harry reminded me a little of myself when he explained his logical observations. It's hilarious because he comes across as obnoxious to people on the receiving end. Sally is genuinely high maintenance when it comes to ordering food (also like myself). But the chemistry the two have is perfect. You can tell they're meant for each other; especially when they hate each other. Most 21st century romantic comedies lack meaning (besides sex) and originality. They're out of ideas after all this time I guess. This is a truly brilliant film fun to watch again and again.
Beginners (2010)
Something Different
This movie reminds me of "HottieBoombaLottie" in the sense of an empty plot. It certainly was strange, but very casual. I picked this movie for its unique plot. It didn't turn out to be much, but it was somewhat pleasant to watch. If you don't really see the point in watching this, then at least pay attention to Arthur, the adorable Jack Russell Terrier. I wish my Jack Russell Terrier were as obedient, but I guess that's what makes her her. I don't regret watching this movie; it helps when you know not to expect much. Instead, see the little things that give this movie character. It sort of goes on the idea of an average everyday person that gets hit with shocking news he never would have expected. It's good for him to know that he's not alone in "Okay, this just happened
now what?", and yes, that's great.
Friends with Benefits (2011)
Awesome soundtrack
This was a very 21st century movie. It seemed like it was trying too hard to avoid being cliché, but it just ended up being cliché with a twist. It was enjoyable to watch, and fun to see Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis in action. Above all, the soundtrack is awesome; just like the movie hints. The good thing about this movie that stands out against the rest of its kind is that there's more to it than the title implies. Most people have to learn the hard way in life; few save themselves in time. The ending credits were so much fun that I had to sit until the very end. They did a great job on this movie. Few romantic comedies nowadays have as much creativity as this movie does.
Our Idiot Brother (2011)
Nice and Genuine
This was a nice, okay movie well worth watching. It's not everyday that you see a comedy that's actually meaningful. Comedy indeed, Ned is unpredictable with a strange understanding of the world. He's sweet and genuine, and hasn't the slightest clue of the obvious. I wasn't expecting the brief nudity, but brief and spontaneous it was, in a funny sense of the situation. The ending was a little too clichè, but easy to overlook based on the movie overall. This is the second movie I've seen starring Emily Mortimer (the first was "City Island"; she brings a lot of emotion to the characters she plays. She also always looks like she's about to cry, but she's very genuine about it. I also didn't expect such a great cast altogether. I recommend this movie to anyone who has ever had an uncertainty in life; watch and partake in Ned's incredible journey to clarity.
30 Minutes or Less (2011)
Not What I Expected
The trailer preview seemed much better than the movie itself. I was rather disappointed. It started off really slow until towards the middle, when things started to pick up. The different camera angles and shots were amazing during the driving scenes; they fit perfectly. Even though I like most of the cast, the casting was still poorly put together for this movie. It was almost mediocre acting. The ending was great, with some last minute laughs, and fun for the imagination. Well accomplished, excluding loose ends, makes this movie better than it would seem. Some scenes I felt were unnecessary, and the entire movie is filled with sex references and poor language. It made me realize how this movie pegged the common language, actions, as well as mannerisms, perfectly for this day and age. It's sad really.
The Shining (1980)
The creepiness of Stephen King
Stephen King's intentions are simple: scare the s*** out of people. He succeeds every time. From the beginning, the movie seemed crappy and weird, but it specialized in the dramatic effect; building suspense. I don't like horror films, nor do I enjoy reading horrific stories, the paranoid coward I am, but this is one of those classic, memorable movies that needed to be experienced. I've experienced other works of Stephen King ("Secret Window", "Christine", "Carrie", "Pet Sematary"), and I noticed he leaves a creepy ending every time. I did not particularly like the way the movie was filmed. There weren't enough closeups, when there should have been; but maybe I'm just used to the 21st century way of filming movies. My not-so-best description of this movie would be, creepy and weird. But I suppose that's the point. Jack Nicholson did a phenomenal job in portraying the major creepiness of the main character. This movie kind of freaked me out (as it was supposed to) and reminded me of the craziness that resides in normal people. You just never know.
Super 8 (2011)
You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to love it.
This is the first movie I've come across with normal "jumpy parts" in which I can withstand without much fear. This movie was enjoyable in an almost creepy sense. If I were a big sci-fi fan, this would be my favorite movie. It's amazing how much you could get away with in the 1970s; it's scary but cool at the same time. I liked the story, and the way it played out with ease. My favorite character would have to be Cary, with his insane obsession and knowledge of explosives. The group of friends benefit each other, giving the movie excellent morality. Not every threat is our enemy; if only the military understood that. I also love the title of the movie; it fits perfectly since an 8 millimeter camera is involved, and the movie truly is super.
