Schultze Gets the Blues (2003)
You've Gotta Get the Lawnmower Humor
I hate to be the person who says you have to "get the culture" to get the humor of this movie... but I have to be that person. The scene where the man has the unreasonable reaction to the neighbor's lawnmower had me rolling. The lawnmower is the natural enemy of Germans. There is even a law that it is illegal to use a lawnmower on Sundays. Mix that with the scene of the old men at the crossing gate, angrily dinging their little bells rather than just going around the gate... and the man at the doctor's office because he's worried that his changing music taste might be a sign of a serious malady... and you've got an extremely subtle, but just hysterical view of the German temperament. If I didn't teach German, and hadn't spent a lot of time there, I would have hated this movie. However, if you have German parents or grandparents, or have been personally chided for not following some random rule in Germany (like mowing your lawn on a Sunday), you'll love this movie.
The Pirate Movie (1982)
Okay, all you people who enjoy this are Drunk!
Drunk. And not just a little drunk. I LOVE musicals, I even love bad movies. But this, dear God... I'm half-way through, and even half-naked Christopher Atkins ain't gonna keep me hanging' on. The bad special effect of the ship through the cove is very funny... oh wait, Chris just climbed aboard the ship in a loin cloth (even if it really looks more like a diaper)... maybe there is some homo-erotic value after all... NO, not worth it. I love the way that the film gives Sullivan a writing credit because a portion of his lyrics have been cannibalized for the movie. I also think its hysterical that another reviewer noted that the film "nearly" ruined Kristi McNichol's career. Yea... NEARLY. Movie go back to Blockbuster Right Now!!
