Macumba Love (1960)
Drive In Horror Memories
An interesting memory was jogged at seeing the listing for this film.
I saw this at the drive in when I was 8 and, of course, in my jammies.
I tried to go to sleep in the back seat but was terrified by the voodoo.
44 years later I still remember that damn movie as the bane of my young drive in experience, lol.
My 81 year-old mother still laughs whenever I mention it, although she insists that it was only a "Joe Palooka" doll that was used, and that I actually fell asleep and only woke up at the scary scenes. I seem to recall a different set of facts, but no one else is around to corroborate my story.
I wonder...could she be one of the undead, too?
Head Over Heels (1979)
Leave well enough alone
I saw this movie in its original release before it was pulled to be edited into Chilly Scenes in Winter. In fact, I had it taped off of HBO, then lost it or taped over it and had to buy Chilly Scenes in Winter, which disappointed me. I have yet to find the original.
The first edit was the best: uplifting, love-affirming and, yes, corny, but so was the whole movie, so why change gears at the end?
The entire cast seemed to have fun in their idiosyncratic roles - a real dysfunctional family that would somehow manage even today without Jerry Springer or a reality show.
