Punjab Nahi Jaungi (2017)
"Help Me Durdana"
This is the 3rd Pakistani movie I have seen in theaters (Bin Roye and Balu Mahi) and I gotta say, my experience was awesome!
The story follows Fawad Khagga (Humayun Saeed) who comes from a family of landlords, gets a Masters in Political Science. Then there's Amal, (played by the gorgeous Mehwish Hayat) who came back from London doing a degree in Economics. They were both childhood friends. Fawad wanted to marry Amal, but Amal refused saying that she does not want to marry a feudal person. She rather wants to marry Vassay (Azfar Rehman) her fellow class mate. Adding to that, Durdana Butt (Urwa Hocane) Fawad's cousin, is in love with Fawad. Fawad remains determined to win Amal's heart. How he plans to do that and what happens afterwards forms the rest of the movie.
The visuals of Pakistan Punjab is stunning! Heer's tomb, Karachi and the countryside of Faisalabad are beautifully shown. The songs are alright. Humayun Saeed was great, Mehwish Hayat, as always, stunning and great. Urwa Hocane was OK, Ahmed Ali Butt was funny.
Give this movie a watch. You won't regret it.
Top Gun (1986)
Classic
Top Gun
This movie was the biggest hit ever. My dad recalled seeing this in the 80s when it came out. I was curious about seeing this and I was happy about it afterwards. What has Hollywood come to honestly with all this justin beiber crap? I guess Old is Gold.
An arrogant pilot and his friend take a flight class and fall in love with a teacher.
The Pluses: EVERYTHING!!! The Minuses: a little corny
Overall, Top Gun deserved to be a classic. Everything from acting to special effects was good. What really got me curious was which "hostile territory" was the carrier in during the climax? Watch it and you will love it. My message to Hollywood is DO not remake this movie under any circumstance.
Ted (2012)
Funny
Ted
So I saw this movie last week and I enjoyed it. I was pretty excited that Seth MacFarlene was behind this project so that was one reason for me to enjoy it.
Soooo, a 35 year old man faces a dilemma: he must between his girlfriend or his teddy bear that he loved since his childhood.
The Pluses: The main pair, Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlence, The sequence at the party, the ending
The Minuses: Not appropriate for kids under 18, the humor is the same style as Family Guy
Overall, Ted is a good movie. It was not super hilarious but it was just regular hilarious. This is not suitable for kids under 18.
Takers (2010)
Not Bad
Takers
When I heard about this movie, I thought I'd ignore it. But then I saw the names Matt Dillon. Chris Brown, and TI Harris in this, so now I changed my mind. So honestly, it was star power that brought me to this flick. Upon seeing this, I thought it was not bad, and it kept me hooked for the entire film.
A group tries to pull off their biggest heist, but there is a detective hot on their trail.
The Pluses: The cast performed well, especially Idris Elba and Matt Dillon. The camera style, the action scenes.
The Minuses: The concept of heist pulling has been done time to time.
Overall, Takers is a good movie. Don't let the star cast be the only reason to watch this movie. Watch this with an open mind and you'll be surprised.
Ajeossi (2010)
Dark and Deep...
The Man from Nowhere
My love for Korean movies is starting to become very obsessive. While the theme of revenge has present throughout many films, such as Man on Fire, Taken etc, this one is awesome yet sad.
A quiet man who works at a pawnshop squares off with the mafia to save a girl.
The Pluses: Woh Bin, the action scenes, the innocence of the little girl and the story moved a lot faster.
The Minuses: Too gory, and so much cussing.
Overall, The Man from nowhere is an awesome gun toting movie. It may be a simple story (guy saving girl) but no, it is much more complex than that. This movie is not for sensitive viewers. 9/10
The Spy Next Door (2010)
Good Family Movie
The Spy Next Door
When I first heard of this movie, I thought "is this a remake of the Pacifier with an Asian guy?" Jackie Chan was in it and I wanted to watch it, despite negative reviews. I saw it and though it may share many, yes many similarities with The Pacifier (retired/undercover spy, the boss a traitor, loving kid, hateful kid etc) this is good in its own way.
The Pluses: Mainly the cast, Billy Ray Cyrus George Lopez and who could forget JACKIE CHAN!!!! Jackie's action scenes
The Minuses: Too corny, and too similar to the Pacifier. (needed more originality)
Overall, The Spy Next Door is a great family flick for those who love Jackie Chan. Give it a try. I just wish they could have been more original.
Persepolis (2007)
Not Bad
Persepolis
When I read the book, I fell in love with it. I wanted to see the move really badly. When you see the movie based on your favorite books, sometimes it lacks the same magic as the book. Persepolis is one of those book.
The Pluses: GREAT animation style, the acting by all the characters
The Minuses: Missing a lot of stuff from the book and things were a little mixed up.
Overall, Perseoplis is one of those movies that somehow works. Read the book (s) to get a better understanding of this novel.
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
Spectacular
Letters from Iwo Jima
When I hard of this movie a long time ago, I thought it would be boring. But I was wrong because it had Clint Eastwood in the directors chair. I was moved by this movie, because 1) It shows Japanese people suffering from war as much as the Allies did and 2) Positive portrayal of the Japanese. Undoubtedly, it is one of the best WW2 flicks ever.
The Positives: EVERYTHING!! The Minuses: None, except confused ending.
Overall, Letters from Iwo Jima is a great movie for everybody. this shows that even the enemy deals with stress and trauma. The reason why I give it a 9 was because the ending was confusing. 9/10
Hung fan kui (1995)
Awesome
Rumble in the bronx
I heard a lot about this movie and how it launched Jackie Chan's career in the west. i saw this and it was awesome despite the fact it was a typical 90s movie.
Jackie Chan visits his uncle in NY and becomes involved with a motorcycle gang.
The pluses: Jackie Chan and his action work, and the the girl who plays Nancy.
The Minuses: Weird acting by white actors, kid was annoying, corny at times and melodramatic.
Overall, Rumble in the bronx is great and funny at time. 8/10
The Dilemma (2011)
Don't Judge a book by its cover
The Dilemma
When I heard of this movie, I expected to laugh. Barring a couple of scenes, this movie was pretty dark and sensitive. Then I saw Ron Howards name and I was like, was this the same guy who made the Da Vinci Code and Cinderella Man?
Vince Vaughan plays a man who is about to get married, but he sees his best friends wife kissing another dude. Should he tell him or not?
The Pluses: The cast and the director, some humor able scenes The Minuses: not a comedy, and too sensitive.
Overall the Dilemma was a time passer. i guess we tend overlook these things but I did appreciate the fact that it did not downplay the concept of adultery. 7/10
Jing wu feng yun: Chen Zhen (2010)
Pretty Good
Legend of the Fist
I saw this trailer during a screening of "IP MAN" and I was like oh yea, i have to see this! It had Donnie Yen in it, so that pretty much summed it up. When I saw the movie, It blew me away. It was great. It had a cool 20's like extravagance in it.
The Pluses: The Scenery of Shanghai, Donnie Yen and his fighting skills, Shu Qi and her sexiness. Actions scenes and how the Japanese were being portrayed.
The Minuses: Too short, and some Chinese Propaganda inserted.
Overall, Legend of the fist is great, watch it for Donnie Yen.
Xin Su shi jian (2009)
Ehhh
Shinjuku Incident
I am a big Jackie Chan, no doubt about that. I read about this movie as it was Jackie's first "dramatic" role. I saw this movie and i thought not good not bad but ehhh.
Jackie Chan Plays Steel Head, a poor immigrant who goes to Japan in search of his Fiancé.
The Pluses: GREAT depiction of Japan, Jackie Chan using his fighting skills, the girl Lily and the Yakuza members. The overall message of togetherness.
The Minuses: Kinda dramatic, its gets gory to the end. Sad ending. Leave it at that
Overall, Shinjuku Incident is a good movie but has its bad. watch it for Jackie Chan.
The Dictator (2012)
Very Funny
The Dictator
I saw this movie a couple of hours a go, and i loved it!
A dictator faces the taste of real life when he is forced out of power.
The Pluses: Sacha Baren Cohen, The chopper scene, the restaurant scene, the montage of him working at the store, the political humor/theme, and Anna faris.
The Minuses: Too short, some scenes were crude (less than Borat or Bruno, but avoid in front of family) some scenes in trailer were missing from film.
Overall, The DICTATOR will make you laugh, and will make you feel disgusted. This is an R Rated movie so be aware. 9/10
Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo (2004)
Not bad
Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo
When I read the reviews of this film, I thought this film was to be avoided. After failing to overcome my temptation, I watched it. To my surprise, it was not as "Anti-Pakistan" as I thought it would be. The actors ( mainly Akshay Kumar) did a great job.
The Pluses: The topic of Indo-Pak relations. To clarify, the film was not entirely blaming Pakistan because it did make some good points. For example, Sikander Khan (General of Pak) says that Sikhs are more than welcome to visit Nanaka Sahib in Lahore, as he has no problems with Hindus visiting Amarnarth. The climax is a good one, and I hope one day this will happen. Amitabh is great as well as Akshay and Bobby. The scenery of Rajashthan is good. The songs are a great tune especially Hume Tumse Hua Hai Pyar and Chali Aa.
The Minuses: The songs are great, but they come randomly and hurt the films progression. The action seems to fake, as well as the special effects. (The submarine scene in the beginning). The film tends to be melodramatic at times. The camera is shaky too.
Overall, ATHWS is a good movie. Watch with an open mind. Btw, its not saying "India Good" or "pak bad" basically, it's a film advocating for peace and that there are people from both sides of borders that will disrupt it. Let me just say, this film is not lying about sponsoring Indo-Pak relations, it just has a unique way of saying it. 7/10.
Moo-jeok-ja (2010)
Great but....
A Better Tomorrow
I had seen a trailer of this film during a screening of Jackie Chan's "1911." I was keen on seeing, but it fell short of my expectations.
Two brothers who have a thorny relationship try to gain each other's trust in the back drop of mafia trade.
The Pluses: Great scenery of Busan, acting of the main characters, the action scenes
The Minuses: slow pace, confusing plot, a lot of gore and cussing
Overall, A Better Tomorrow is great movie with some of its flaws. Don't watch if you have a sensitive heart.
Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010)
Unique
Once Upon a time in Mumbai
I have been waiting to see this movie for awhile mainly because it had Emraan Hashmi in it. Upon seeing it, the wait was worth it. It was finally nice to see Emraan cast with an A-Lister (Ajay Devgan)
This movie depicts the rise and fall of Mumbai's greatest Robin hood, Sultan mirza.
The Pluses: Depiction of Mumbai, Kangana and Prachi's beauty, Emmi's, Ajay's and Randeep Hooda's acting. The songs and the CLIMAX!
The Minuses: Nothing huge, but overuse of clichés.
Overall, OUATM is a great gangster movie. There is no violence or sex overdone so you can enjoy this with anyone. 9/10
Hop (2011)
Entertaining
Hop
At first, I heard bad reviews for this movie. But they were wrong. While they are entitled to their opinion, several things cannot be right.
Hop is about a bunny who does not want to become the easter bunny and wants to become a drummer.
The Pluses: the humor, family friendly, the main lead (russell Brand) the other guy James Marsdan.
The Minuses: repeated story line, easter is referenced a lot, so it gets annoying.
Overall, Hop is a great movie, watch it with your family
Hugo (2011)
Interesting
Hugo
As I saw this film, i thought i would find this boring but i Did not. You'll be hooked to see what happens.
A little boy who lives in a railway station tries to find out more about his father.
The Pluses: The scenery of Paris, the acting, the CGI and the robot, direction by yours truly Martin Scorsese.
The Minuses: A little slow the first 10-15 minutes, and a British accent, in France??
Overall, Hugo is a good film. You will like it, as my me and my family did.
Sheen (2004)
Interesting
Sheen
Wow, I cannot believe I am the first reviewer for this film. This film depicts Kashmiri Pandits being forced out of their homes by the Muslim Extremists who are fighting for their freedom, but ironically, taking way others (eg Kashmiri Pandits)
In Kashmir, all is well for Pandit Amarnath (Raj Babbar)and his family, but when Muslims extremists (backed by Pakistan) bring their narrow minded ideals into the valley, peace is threatened.
The Pluses: Raj babbar's acting, Sheen and her looks. Anup Soni's acting, it actually makes u feel he is dangerous. Some of the dialogues such as "A True Follower of Islam would not tolerate a neighbor's grief, or "Why would you advocate for freedom while you are taking someone elses." The songs were nice for background only, not lisp singing.
The Minuses: Depiction of massacres and violence are heart breaking and not for the sensitive hearted. The love story is an obstacle. Released at the time when Indo-Pak relations were warm.
Overall, Sheen is an underrated flick that depicts the suffering of the Kashmiri Pandits. Raj Babbar should have at least got a nomination for best supporting actor at least. 7/10.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
Interesting
On Stranger Tides
I had mixed reactions to this movie, half of the time I was bored and half of the time I was into the movie.
Jack Sparrow and others try to find the fountain of youth.
Plus: Johnny Depp kept from watching this big bore and the action scenes Minus: Too much cleavage for a Disney Movie, annoying accents, and ugly people.
On the whole, don't expect much. I missed Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. They should have stopped at three movies. Next time, make a movie called Pirates of Somalia.
Dil Diya Hai (2006)
Don't Expect Much
Dil Diya Hai
My God, this is probably the first movie ever, that I gave a bad review too. I mean it's not my fault, there is so many things wrong with this flick.
Emraan Hashmi plays Sahil who sells his client to a pimp. Soon, he must save her.
The Pluses: Good Music, Good depiction of London, Patel's corny jokes, Geeta Basra :)
The Minuses: Dumb Plot, So many plot holes (Why does Emraan hashmi have to worry about saving money for an operation, doesn't the UK have free healthcare; Who in their right mind forgives the person that sold them, I know I wouldn't) DUMB Typical Indian movie ending (Bogus Action, Emraan Hashmi fighting everybody at once, He's not Sunny Deol)
Overall, Dil Diya Hai is for those who are dumb and think that physics has no existence. Emraan Hashmi was okay, even though I can't believe he associated himself with these films. Geeta is pretty though you don;t see her much in films much anymore. Ashmit was annoying. Mithun should not have done this film. I give this film a 5/10.
Larry Crowne (2011)
Marvellous
Larry Crowne
I love Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. So, when I heard this movie was coming out, I was excited and I wanted to see it badly. I had high expectations, and they were met!
A man who is laid off from his job decides to enter college to improve his life.
The Pluses: Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Great Star Cast. Good topic (recession, and finding a job especially in today's time) Funny Moments especially from Julia Roberts. Family-Friendly
The Minuses: Nothing big really.
Overall, Larry Crowne is a great movie that can be used as a stress reliever. There are no inappropriate scenes, so this is a must enjoy for the family. 9/10.
Darr (1993)
Pretty Creepy yet good.
Darr (1993)
Sunny Deol and SRK are my two favorite Bollywood actors and I was excited to learn that they did a film together called Darr. However, after the release of this film SRK took all the credit and left Sunny standing in the dark alone, and thus started a rivalry with him. When I saw this film, I was excited to see them on the same screen space.
The Pluses: the main cast, (especially Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla), nice songs, Anupam Kher and his wacky Cricket interest, and the reference of Imran Khan in a positive light. Great quality picture.
The Minuses: This is a 90's movie, so expect some corny dialogues, unexpected events in the film and songs that appear out of nowhere. Not for the sensitive hearted due to some scary scenes. SRK appears to be what we call in modern times, as a stalker.
Overall, Darr is a great film. Watch it and you will be blown away. it' sad that SRK and Sunny Deol don't make films together anymore
Crash (2004)
Thought Provoking
Crash
Before I review this movie, let me ask you this: have u ever been mistaken for another ethnicity? Do you think the way people act is "racially motivated?" Crash boasting of an ensemble cast, examines racism and bigotry in Los Angeles.
In 36 hours, many Los Angelers lives will be affected due to ones actions and there are connected to each other in some way.
The Pluses: The acting of ALL members, the topic, (Racism). What I also liked was the positive portrayal of the Persians. Don Cheadle was the entire reason I watched this film.
The minuses: Lotta cussing so keep that in mind.
Overall, This Academy Award winner film was the best and it has changed the way I thought of the person next to me. I give it a 9/10
The Devil's Double (2011)
Great Movie
The Devil's Double
When I first heard of this movie, I was quite interested. In fact, I had seen the trailer every time. Many people are familiar with Saddam and his cruelty but this Movie shows Uday Hussein's menace which is less looked upon. The time period is during/after the Gulf war in 1991 but focused a little before when Iran-Iraq had a war.
A look alike man by the name of Latif Yahya becomes Uday Hussein's body double and faces a life cruelty.
The Pluses: Great Scenery, The acting of Dominic Cooper and his role (he looked authentically Arab)The action, and they show various war clips of Iraq which is helpful to some. The dude who played Saddam Hussain actually looked liked him. The girls were great, especially the girl who played the Concubine, Sarrab
The Minuses: This is an R-rated flick so expect a lot of violence, cussing sex and nudity especially towards the end.
Overall, The Devil's Double is a great Fictional film, notice I said fictional as some events are taken out of proportion. i give this an 8/10
