Deep Water (2022)
much better plot and psychodrama than gone girl
This really isn't a mystery. It is more of a portrait of two people and the messed up games they play. It's so much better than gone girl. I can't believe that movie rated so much higher than this one. This one is much more realistic and interesting.
The Goldfinch (2019)
Did not read the book, but I read the Wikipedia page before I saw the movie
I have been wanting to watch this movie for quite some time but had been waiting to read the book first . This evening I noticed that the movie was available on Prime and decided to go ahead and watch it. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it so I paused the movie and read the synopsis on Wikipedia. On that same page it also described the bad reviews and weak box office the movie generated. But based on the synopsis, even with the spoilers, I decided to watch the movie and was not disappointed. There are a lot of time jumps and intercut memories, but they were all done very well. I think anyone could watch this movie without referring to the Wikipedia page first. All of the acting was top notch and the visuals and sets exemplary of the money that was spent making this movie. It's unfortunate that this movie did not do well in theaters as it is definitely worth seeing and stands on its own. And I am more motivated to read the book now.
This Means War (2012)
Great to look at, not a completely horrible storyline
While the storyline is kind of flimsy and sexist, the movie never tries to insinuate that it is trying to do something serious. So it's not as if they are trying to pull a fast one. All of the sets and styling, from the opening party, to the private homes and offices of the characters are aesthetically stunning and covetous to look at. It's a cute and silly bromance and romance. And the stunts are amazing. McG does not disappoint. Reese has never been more attractive. Good chemistry between the guys as well as with Reese. I think they all did the movie because it was probably a lot of fun.
Bliss (2021)
For those of you who enjoy alternate realities
For those of you who enjoy alternate realities.
Definitely not for those who are not into science fiction or drug-induced realities. However if you like that kind of stuff, this movie is for you. There is also an emotional component mixed in there. Both main actors do a great job. Not sure why this movie is getting such terrible reviews. Brought to you by the same director of Another Earth
Wildling (2018)
kept me watching to the end
This wasn't completely horrible. In some instances is was entertaining and unintentionally funny. I didn't realize it was turning into a werewolf movie, but the consistent shots of Anna ravenously devouring meat and her sudden super human strength and ability to run fast after having been kept in a room with no exercise for 15 years should have been giveaways. Bel Powley makes this movie worth watching. I never expected to see her in this kind of movie. It also helped that the movie was only around 90 minutes long.
Unexplained loose ends include: 1. how was the "daddy" able to get an unlimited supply of drugs to use on her? 2. how was he able to be walking around so soon after his self inflicted gunshot wound, not to mention his 15 years of holding Anna captive. 3. who is the homeless hunter guy and how does he know so much?
The Discovery (2017)
Interesting and Romantic
What do you do when you suddenly know there might be a chance for redemption, a way for a second chance in life, that everything you have experienced is connected to the moment at hand? Do you take a chance or stay on the road you're on?
Well done and worth seeing.
Dogville (2003)
...if no one is watching...
i saw this movie when it came out a few years ago while i was traveling in berlin. i am not sure if it was because i was in Germany or just because of the movie itself, but i was strongly effected by it. the message i took away from this was that this is the way people will behave when they essentially believe that no one is watching. this is ironic because most of the people in the town claim to be god fearing and if they did believe in god, they would not behave in such evil ways.
i also found interesting the whole set up of the nicole kidman character. i think she is set up to be a Christ figure. brilliant! one of the most original movies i have seen in a long time.
Men (1997)
realistic
i first saw this movie years ago and i liked it then and i still like it now. i thought the movie realistically portrayed a woman who is searching for her own meaning of sex and relationships. she's into trying new things and experiencing life and, as she says in the film, not taking anything that anyone else has experienced as a given. Stella is not looking to be saved or taken care of. she is her own woman who is not afraid of anything and is just curious about life. the different men she meets along the way are interesting and funny and it is nice that she is not trying to fit herself into their lives nor their lives into hers. the movie is not formulaic at all. the food featured in the movie is great as is the music provided by mark Mothersbaugh.
